The standards of archaeological "journalism" are appalling. Hatchet pieces accusing heritage of constraining development. Misinformation. Sloppy repetition of myths. If the standard is this bad for archaeology, a subject I know about, how can I trust reporters on anything else?

Nice to be reminded, by someone who passed me an old copy of the Fortress journal, of the time I found (or rediscovered) Gloucester’s first Norman castle in 1990 while supervising evaluation work there. Memories of being 3-4 metres down with dodgy scaffolding ! The ditch base had wooden stakes.
