One subtle thing I mislike about this era of politics is the increasing use of the word "punishment" to mean "retaliation." If you confuse those two, you are accepting the legitimacy of a mafia state.

The Oathkeepers were ostensibly founded to encourage law enforcement and military to refuse unlawful orders. To prevent a tyrannical government from attacking its own citizens. Wonder what they’re up to these days.

Just remember that Trump and all his consiglieres confidently told us over and over again that Kilmar Abrego Garcia was *never* coming back to the US, to get us to demobilize, give up on politics, and internalize the idea that everything is futile.

New piece! Media coverage of Kilmar Abrego Garcia hurt Trump, not Democrats. An actually data-driven analysis of some stale conventional wisdom. Alt title: Matt Yglesias is wrong about Democrats and Abrego Garcia🧵

If you think that “TACO” couldn’t possibly work, have you heard of “Let’s Go Brandon?”

you know who else came from chicago and was on "a mission from god"

Regarding the discourse last week over whether we need more sprawl development to end the housing shortage: There's no reason why greenfield/brownfield development within existing metro regions can't look more like this than like McMansion sprawl. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/25/c...

Imagine being so popular that when your older brother tries to trade your island like a baseball card, your subjects rise up in support of King Fred.

Kenya's real GDP is 20x what it was in 1993. Real per capita GDP is 10x. Amazing.

A century ago, Catalan Renaissance Man, Santiago Rusiñol led an expedition to Ibiza and found a trove of 2,500 year old Phoenician artifacts.

A simple experiment you can do is buy a server, set up a website with nothing on it, then look at the access logs. All day, every day, there are random systems just blasting vulnerabilities at every device on the internet. Analysts call it "background noise", executives call it "cyber attacks".

"There were two 'Reigns of Terror,' if we would but remember it and consider it; the one wrought murder in hot passion, the other in heartless cold blood; the one lasted mere months, the other had lasted a thousand years" Mark Twain

Spent a few minutes skimming through the Wikipedia bios of the “Kids in the Hall” and good God. Most critics would be content to pan the movie in the Baghdad Times. The documentary was completed and the DVD is available on Amazon for $6.

I’m sorry. Why are we rebuilding Tropicana Field when we could be announcing the Montreal Raies Diables?

Now that "scale is all we need" has predictably faltered... 1. Small AI models often perform better in context. 2. Obsession w bigness has bad consequences, from climate, to power concentration, to research capture. Me + @gaelvaroquaux.bsky.social @sashamtl.bsky.social arxiv.org/abs/2409.14160
