Fried chicken is the final boss of addictions it seems.

You learn pretty quickly to not stick your finger in a light socket after doing it. No amount of being told seems to teach that lesson like doing it. Shame that 30% of the country is forcing a collective version of this by needing to rip things down to remember why they were built to begin with.

You know, if you look at human history since the neolithic revolution and the rise and fall of empire, America really blew ours pretty quickly in a spectacularly stupid way. Makes you think that those European powers in the 1800s who saw us as a bunch of yokels pretty much called it.

March Madness: Florida wins its third national title and denies Houston its first, rallying for a 65-63 victory.

It's weird to me how 18th Century enlightenment thinkers are fetishized by a segment of our population, yet they seem to know nothing about them. For instance, if you think this tariff business makes any sense, never use the phrase "invisible hand" ever again. Adam Smith is rolling in his grave.

Had three flights cancel on me today and met Cornell West before giving up and driving from Memphis back to Oxford through an hour’s worth of tornado warnings. What was your Saturday like?

Every year since 2010 - "I am going to really get ahead of this conference deadline this year and save myself the last minute freakout." And every year since 2010 - "Well, guess I'm writing 3/4s of this paper in 48 hours while trying not to devolve into a weeping mass hiding in the corner"

Some days I find myself wondering that if, as a species, we're going to end up extinct due to ourselves, a natural catastrophe, the growing brightness of the sun, or the heat death of the universe anyway, that maybe the whole neolithic revolution was a mistake.

Always fun seeing if I can get a group of high school students to engage with a bunch of German and French 20th century media sociology. They were super into it this year, which was heartening.

This is all so stupid. Assuming no one lobs a nuke and touches off the apocalypse, we're about to teach ourselves that maybe our grandparents and great grandparents came up with all of these agencies and systems for a reason by immiserating most of the population for a couple of decades again.

I feel like these guys must take bets on how far they can go before the base doesn't believe it. "Yeah, so, say that Canada has been taken over by Mexican drug cartels. No way they'll buy that." 24 hours later. "Bro! Bruuuh! They totally fucking bought that too! We can just say anything!"

Employing the rope-a-dope strategy to preserve some sort of democracy here as we, the most powerful military power in human history by an order of magnitude, are pulling the whole world to the eve of 1914 is a bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off for us.

I haven't really listened to Tool much in ages, but the sardonic angst of Ænima feels really good these days.

@chrislhayes.bsky.social - what idea did you think is unfashionable with academics? I couldn’t quite figure out the specifics. I was listening to the Know Your Enemy podcast, and I’m an academic. I didn’t hear anything there that you said that wouldn’t have support from at least some of us.

It's quite hard to know what combination of incompetence and sociopathic accelerationism this impeding market crash is.

I feel that philosophy was turned into the butt of a joke as a major in college precisely because it is probably the most dangerous field to the status quo that exists.

What’s worse? That the US Attorney’s office for DC call themselves “Trump’s lawyers” or that they don’t know where to put the apostrophe?

There must be a lot of people who think Indy was the bad guy these days, and I don't mean for appropriating cultural artifacts for museums in the West.

Our culture rewards no trait more than being confidently and shamelessly full of shit.

I still contend that losing Lemmy, David Bowie, and Prince in less that six months is really what caused all of this.

I guess I'm doing one of these now. substack.com/@thegordiana...

@edzitron.com, I imagine if you knew that being right isn't the point you'd be watching all of this with a grin. You did say that either way the bubble goes will cause pain, but if this sticks, a lot of folks should acknowledge they were tilting at windmills while you were seeing giants all along.

It should learn to code

A politics that is informed solely by schadenfreude, with that it's only goal, is ultimately just nihilism.
