Send a message to the PCs, OLP & ONDP that you want progressive policies, politicians who aren’t forced to toe a party line & more multi-party collaboration in Ontario politics, by voting for your local Green Party of Ontario candidate on or before Feb 27th!

If we get MMP in Canada one day, we need to push so that we get multi-member ridings of 2-7 MPs with MPs elected under a system like open list PR, while maintaining top-up MPs by reducing their share so that they only make up around 15% of the total MPs

What are your thoughts about this voting system?

Albanese was elected with the most progressive parliament since at least 1951, if not the most progressive ever Unlike Gillard in 2010 Albanese has outright squandered the whole term We could have had so many good things, but he'd prefer to do nothing and cast the Greens as blockers To what end?

Doug Ford is planning to call a snap election even though we’re likely soon going to have to deal with a tariff war with the USA

In my opinion, if I could change the constitution and/or parliamentary rules, if a PM wants to prorogue parliament, they should table a “motion to prorogue” & prorogation should only happen if 50%+ of MPs (preferably elected under a PR system) vote in favour of the motion

Get ready for division to possibly happen within the CPC caucus after the election between socons and social progressives, especially since right now they are mainly “united” (which is done through silencing & punishing MPs) because they don’t want Trudeau as PM

Poilievre is not a fan of Conservative MPs freely expressing their views publicly In fact, according to The Globe and Mail, his own team told "MPs not to comment on Alberta transgender policies", effectively silencing them on this issue. He shouldn't be PM

We need Senators to be elected, and under a Proportional Representation system! (or we could abolish the Senate altogether, that works with me too)

I am happy that Bashar Al-Assad will likely not lead Syria anymore, and I am honestly also worried about what will come next. All Syrian people deserve peace, safety, democracy, freedom & secularism

I really appreciate the Lib Dems’ work in the UK when it comes to their opposition to FPTP & them pressuring the Labour government to support Proportional Representation

The faster we work to collaborate this election to implement proportional representation the faster we can have the next election where all parties can run fairly on their own without vote splitting @maritstilesndp.bsky.social @bonnieforontario.bsky.social @mikeschreiner.bsky.social

Great question - no, it’s not random! They go through every single one of that candidate’s ballot papers, look at the second preferences listed on them, and distribute the surplus pro-rata so that everyone gets the appropriate share. If they did it any other way, a recount could change the result!

STV is an awesome voting system!

Reminder: Ireland’s PR-STV electoral system not only allows you to support the candidates you like - but also to punish the ones you don’t. If there’s a candidate(s) you despise, you can promote *literally everyone else* ahead of them by giving those rivals all the preferences on your ballot paper.

Putting together lists for #GE24 candidates by party affiliation that are on #SpeirGorm. Not many are over here yet, but here's a 🧵of each. Will add to the lists as I find or am suggested more accounts.

🗳️ #GE24 POLL: Irish Times/Ipsos B&A (Nov 20-23, MoE 2.8%) Fianna Fáil 21 (+2 in ten days) Sinn Féin 20 (+1) Fine Gael 19 (-6) Social Democrats 6 (+2) Labour 4 (-1) Greens 4 (+1) Aontú 3 PBP-Solidarity 3 (+1) Independents/others 17 (-3) www.irishtimes.com/politics/202...

I’m watching the French coverage of the 2024 New Brunswick election, and my friend @gabeblanc.bsky.social randomly ended up on it lol

Let’s be clear: No voting system should incentivize parties to concentrate their votes in specific ridings and lead to them ignoring their own voters in other ridings FPTP needs to go! #cdnpoli #onpoli #electoralreform #proportionalrepresentation

🚨 Green MP Mike Morrice calls out the Liberals for trying to buy votes from Canadians, while standing up for Canadians with disabilities 🔥🔥🔥 #cdnpoli #onpoli #justintrudeau #trudeau #mikemorrice #pierrepoilievre #poilievre #dougford #canada #canadian #canadianpolitics #fyp

🚨 Ontario Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner criticizes Doug Ford’s FAILURE to address the housing crisis Mike Schreiner: “The Premier has to stop distracting from the housing crisis in saying no to affordable homes” #cdnpoli #onpoli #dougford #mikeschreiner #maritstiles #bonniecrombie

As an Ontario taxpayer, I don’t think we need to reduce the revenue we generate so I don’t support a tax cut

Democratic Reform #StarterPack Focus on PR / Ranked Ballot systems but all democratic reform in Canada (side of UK). I'm in #STV in #MMR #onpoli #cdnpoli @fairvotecanada.bsky.social @torontorabit.bsky.social @electoralrenewalca.bsky.social @electionatlasca.bsky.social #munipoli go.bsky.app/SxkCYRw

My favourite voting system: Ranked Ballot Remainder+

The LPC, NDP & BQ will try to make it look like they give MPs the freedom to be themselves after hearing that the CPC exercises tight control on their own MPs, but neither the CPC, LPC, NDP nor BQ allow free votes for their caucus all the time. Only the GPC does that

One reason why Mike Morrice should be re-elected in Kitchener Centre is that we know that he'll be able to be himself all the time in the House of Commons? Why? Because the GPC doesn't have a whip & has free votes all the time in the HoC - none of the other parties have that

Under Poilievre, Conservative MPs are not allowed to collaborate with MPs from other parties in the HoC Chamber or in Committee Poilievre has the power to help reduce polarization in Canada by allowing his MPs to collaborate, but he doesn't want them do that He shouldn't be PM

Great article!

The BBC reports that an unnamed SNP Member of the Scottish Parliament “expressed concern about an “old-school Westminster style” of SNP politician making their way to Holyrood at the next election”. 1/3 www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

The Single Transferable Vote is a candidate-centric ranked ballot (I know a lot of Liberals who like the idea of a ranked ballot) & proportional system that ensures voters have multiple local MPs they can reach out to! Let's implement it in Canada!

If we get MMP in Canada one day, we need to push so that we get multi-member ridings of 2-7 MPs with MPs elected under a system like open list PR, while maintaining top-up MPs by reducing their share so that they only make up around 15% of the total MPs

One of the biggest weaknesses of Canada's election system is how it stifles political diversity. Take the Greater Toronto Area. In 2021, the Liberals were elected in 96% of districts with just 50% of the votes. This distortion skews our perception and emboldens "us vs. them" attitudes.

Great piece by Emerson Howitt for @fairvotecanada.bsky.social on how proportional representation leads to more effective governance. www.fairvote.ca/16/11/2024/t...

Voici la mise à jour de la projection Qc125 par circonscription (15 novembre 2024). Éidemment, il y a de l'incertitude et des intervalles de confiance... La liste complète est ici → qc125.com/districts.htm

Very interesting!
