Shoes on the Danube Bank.👞 A poignant memorial for the victims, including 800 Jews, murdered here in Budapest during WWII. They were ordered to take off their shoes & were shot at the edge of the water. The cast iron shoes represent the ones left behind on the river bank.

1/n Fania Fainer's heart 🧵 This booklet was made by Zlatka Pitluk (nee Snajderhauz) with materials found in the camp. She passed it on to eighteen other women imprisoned in Auschwitz. They wrote wishes and messages of hope in Polish, Hebrew, German and French.

Against all odds: Born in Mauthausen 1/n Eva Clarke was one of only three babies* born in Mauthausen concentration camp who survived the Holocaust. She was born on 29 April 1945, just a day after the Nazis destroyed the camp's gas chambers and less than a week before liberation.
