Does any one else feel bewildered and lost at how fast we crashed into fascism and how many people turned out to be evil?

0. Vought, Vance, Rufo, and those attacking academia see scientists as bureaucrats—in the most pejorative sense of the term—who they can "put into trauma" and drive to quit. They don't understand that science is not just a job. It's a vocation, literally, in the original sense of *a calling*.

“So when it’s all over, if the crown jewel of biomedical research — the enterprise that gave us the human genome sequence, Covid vaccines and treatments for cancer and H.I.V. and obesity — has been destroyed, what will have been the point?” www.nytimes.com/2025/04/11/o...

The 245-year-old American Academy of Arts & Sciences releases a statement rejecting assaults on scholarly and cultural institutions, the rule of law, & open inquiry--and calls on all Americans to "help fortify" democratic civic culture. www.amacad.org/news/board-s...

NEW: Entire scientific fields have been wiped out by the nearly 800 grants cancelled at NIH, finds a @nature.com analysis of the unprecedented cuts. About half of all 2024 NIH projects related to LGBT+ health or vaccine hesitancy — gone. See the other topics and US states hardest hit here:

NEW: The Trump administration wants federal supervision of Columbia University—a consent decree—which could last for years and subject the university to contempt penalties if it doesn't conform to Trump admin demands. www.wsj.com/us-news/educ...

Pombe2025 registration will go live this week. We hope you can join us August 3-8 in Boston. We will provide computers to allow international attendees to leave their phones and laptops at home. You can find the program here: www.bc.edu/bc-web/sites...

Amid the Trump admin's dismantling of the US scientific ecosystem, Nobel Prize-winner @ardemp.bskyverified.social writes on @cnn.com: "I’ve already been approached with an offer to relocate my lab to China, complete with a promise of 20 years of stable research funding." www.cnn.com/2025/04/09/h...

As someone who has worked with wolves: it’s not a dire wolf, it’s not de-extinction, it IS a colossal waste of money and resources

in case you're wondering, "what's the harm in claiming an extinct species has been brought back from the dead" when it most certainly has not, our interior secretary is already using it to justify taking animals off the endangered species list

The NSF's flagship fellowship program typically gives offers to 2,000+ young scientists. This year, in the face of looming budget cuts, that number was halved: only 1,000 received an offer. Our story on what that means for the science talent pipeline: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

“even as university programs are defunded and your favorite books banned, continuing the work (whether that’s literary criticism, studying forgotten histories, or creating art) is a form of resistance. We must always emphatically reach for the truth.”

We often look back on the seminal moments in our history and wonder "What would I have done?" This is our moment. This is our time. We must stand up. We must speak out. We must do everything we can to stop a President who has every intention of destroying our democracy.

If you accept that non-citizens have no right to due process, you are accepting that citizens have no right to due process. All the government has to do is claim that you are not a citizen; without due process you have no chance to prove the contrary.

Suffice to say - if you are a local philanthropist and would like to see infectious disease surveillance continue here in San Diego County, please reach out. Without continued support, we'll lose our eyes on infectious diseases in our county, just as they're likely to surge. Email on website 👇.

This is what democracy looks like

This is a big deal. Spread the word. But it’s tiny compared to the totality of what’s happening at NIH. Cure Research for all cancers, Alzheimer’s, everything is being gutted. Intentionally. It’s all getting burned to the ground but the news isn’t getting out. The new cures won’t be there for you.

San Diego. A good 20,000 plus

Huge turn out

Dr. Peter Marks, who is leaving his FDA post on Saturday after he was offered the choice to resign or be fired, described Kennedy’s tenure to date as “very scary” in an interview with The Wall Street Journal on Friday. www.wsj.com/health/healt...

Massive, unarchivable datasets of cancer, covid, and Alzheimer's research could be lost forever 🔗 www.404media.co/nih-archives...

Here is my best guidance for action, rendered beautifully by the great John Lithgow. I first published these lessons more than eight years ago, in late 2016. They open the twenty chapters of "On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century." snyder.substack.com/p/twenty-les...

"We don’t want your Nazi cars / take a one-way trip to Mars" is a pretty good chant

Everyone wants there to be a grand scheme behind all of this but the terrible truth is that extremely stupid people are in charge and they have a fanatical devotion to wrong, childlike concepts of society and economics cooked up by right wing radio hosts in order to sell tainted dietary supplements

this is the sad truth spoken by our closest neighbor and friend we are spiraling and decompensating thanks to madmen and clowns

“the economic return on federal funding for research has been staggering. According to one recent estimate, government investment in research and development accounted for at least 20 percent of American productivity growth since World War II…” www.thecrimson.com/article/2025...

SCOOP: You've heard about the NIH terminating grants. I've learned of another, less visible way it's disrupting science: It’s removing some applications from peer review. Not rejecting them, but putting them on hold without saying why or if they'll ever be reviewed. www.chronicle.com/article/the-...

We simply had to intentionally destroy the world’s strongest economy while dismantling our scientific and educational infrastructure to ensure that a team with a trans girl would never finish second place in the Mountain West volleyball standings again

This banner is showing up on NIH data repositories. If you use data from these archives you may want to consider what you need access to in the near and far term for your research

Princeton President Chris Eisgruber: “A very constructive partnership that’s existed for about 70 years now between American universities and the American government — all that is in danger right now....I think it’s important for universities to stand shoulder to shoulder as we go forward."

Were you one of the thousands of HHS/CDC/FDA scientists, public health experts, researchers who Trump just cut? I am very interested in hearing from you. I want to know more about the good work you did and what is now lost. [email protected] / [email protected] On Signal: jbendery.41 🙏

It’s stunning to me that the New York Times did not put the story on the bloodbath at the NIH, CDC, and FDA on its front page this morning.
