Some amazing fish from Rapa Nui’s coral reefs! The blue damselfish (Chrysochthys rapanui), known locally as māmata, and the shy little angelfish (Centropyge hotumatua), called kōtoti para, are just a couple of the island’s unique reef inhabitants

New Paper! Excited to share our new paper on coral reef fish traits and biomass dynamics along a 2000km gradient in the Red Sea! We found low trait redundancy, high vulnerability, and surprising patterns driven more by local variability and human impacts than the expected environmental gradient.

Sharing some amazing fish. Tipi tipi ‘uri (Chaetodon litus) endemic to Rapa Nui (Easter Island) #amazingfish

Meet Plectranthias raki, a beautiful new perchlet from #mesophotic reefs in the Maldives. The name raki roughly means "shy" in the Dhivehi language, and we chose it because these fish hide quickly when they see us! #ichthyology doi.org/10.3897/zook... @zookeys.pensoft.net @calacademy.bsky.social

Our newly described ‘Grumpy dwarfgoby’ has been named one of the top 10 new species of 2024 by @pensoft.net! Proud to see our work highlighting the incredible biodiversity of coral reef ecosystems @gobiodon.bsky.social

On the final day of #Fishmas, here’s Pleurosicya michelii, the transparent goby, perched delicately on coral resembling an underwater snow globe.Happy #Fishmas! 🎄🐠❄️

On the 11th day of #Fishmas, I present the stunning Antennatus commerson, a master of camouflage and festive vibes! This incredible frogfish is decked out in its natural holiday attire, flaunting vivid red hues and snowy white patches.

6th day of Fishmas already! Here's a beautiful but unflatteringly named candy cane fish: the Warteye stargazer (Gillellus uranidea). These tiny fellas get up to about 4cm (on a good day) and carry their eggs tucked behind their pectoral fin – yup, you heard that right: they're armpit brooders... 🤏🐠🧪

Today’s #fishmas spotlight is for Cirrhitichthys oxycephalus. With festive red-and-white patterns and feathery “pon pons” on its fins, this hawkfish is pure holiday vibes! The perfect Christmas critter perched on a coral reef.

For today’s #Fishmas, I present to you Ostracion cyanurus, the charming blue-spotted boxfish! This little beauty is nature’s very own Christmas present, wrapped up in its unique, boxy shape and adorned with stunning blue patterns.

Today’s #Fishmas friend is Mimoblennius cirrosus, the Fringed Blenny. Its head filaments, known as cirri, resemble reindeer antlers, making it the perfect festive fish!

For today’s #fishmas we have Notoclinops segmentatus, another candy cane very festive fish found in the cold waters of New Zealand.

I will start a this #fishmas season by sharing the most festive fishes I have photographed. Look at this candy cane pipefish Dunckerocampus multiannulatus

Parrotfish were my first fish love. This is Scarus coeruleus, this is a fish celebrity I got the chance to see diving in Providencia Island in the Colombian Caribbean. #fish #parrotfish #coralreef #blueparrotfish #biodiversity

Did you know that orchids have a big chunk of fungal mtDNA stuck in their own mitochondrial genomes?? In this new preprint, we found that fungal-derived tRNAs are functional in the orchid mitochondria. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... 1/4

🎊 Published: deep, warm-water coral frameworks of the Red Sea 🎊 We used habitat suitability models to show just how extensive these important biodiversity hotspots are! 🪸🌊

Coelacanths are pregnant for five years, the longest gestation of any known animal, and do not reach maturity until they are around 55 years old.

I’m new here. I’m a Colombian biologist and did my PhD exploring the functional ecology and species diversity of cryptobenthic reefs fishes in the Red Sea.
