And, for the record, global sea-ice extent, already at an all-time low for the date, is going the wrong way.

Very recently, those backing Trump's meme coin enriched themselves by nearly $100m. The transactions are confidential. Might Russia have used this as a channel to pay the Republican President for a significant change to the US policy on Ukraine? www.reuters.com/markets/curr...

#news the onion, finally

How modest/strong is this La Niña really? Compared to the most recent El Niño (which wasn't super strong), both the Ocean Niño Index and the Relative one have decreased by about 2.5! That's why we expect global temperatures to decrease (somewhat). And why January 2025's +1.75°C is so worrying!

Current #Arctic sea ice extent levels are more than 400,000 square kilometers 'less' than the previous record low for this date. I will have more updates and charts coming later today. Data here is from JAXA's Arctic Data archive System 🥼❄️

Meanwhile, science keeps on sciencing. Ignore it at your peril. “Global temperatures were in record territory for the first three weeks of the year. And unlike the prior record Januaries there is currently no El Niño event boosting temperatures.” www.theclimatebrink.com/p/january-se...

Something I've noticed that as of a certain speed, one has to start running 🏃‍♀️, and it gets more tiring. Turns out that walking very fast is really energy intensive, but there is still a small jump in energy needed to switch over to running. 🧪 physoc.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1113/...

💧🔥 Climate change is widening water gaps A new study finds that global water shortages will worsen as temperatures rise. Under 3°C warming, water gaps could grow by nearly 15%, worsening scarcity. 🔗 www.nature.com/articles/s41... #SciComm #ClimateChange #WaterCrisis 🧪

Global Sea Surface Temperatures are far less variable from month-to-month than Surface Air Temperatures & show clear cooling trend over the past year as we transition from El Nino to La Nina (left). It's the longer-term warming trend (right) that we should be focused on. Truth is bad enough!

Yikes. Climate scientists were expecting 2025 to be cooler than El Niño years 2023 and 2024, but January is starting the year off even hotter.

There is no cavalry. No karma. No arc of history. Just us. Make calls. Make demands. Love each other. Refuse to carry out orders.

Current policies & NDCs take the world to 2-3C in 2100, across a range of studies. The biggest gap is strengthening climate action to ensure net zero pledges are met, leading to <2C in 2100. @hausfath.bsky.social journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

Lead does not do good things to human health and cognitive development. It took us a while to figure it out. The Romans were also big on lead, and some now argue that it contributed to cognitive decline and perhaps the fall of the empire. 🧪 www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

🌊🌡️📈 For those who (should) care, the North Atlantic Sea Surface Temperatures are close to record high for the time of the year. The shifting baseline syndrome makes our minds lose interest. Excluding recent years shows how extremely hot this 40,000,000 km² ocean still is:

2024 was a record year for sea surface temperatures. 24% of the global ocean area had its warmest year since 1940. 50% had a top 5 warmest year.
