Even if I could hide what I’ve done, why should I? Punishing people for doing what’s right doesn’t make it any less right to do.

Dolphins ride 5K raising money for cancer research!

Universities cut grad student admissions rather than reduce admin bloat! And faculty are afraid to speak up for fear of retaliation! Seems like a perfect storm! #science #academia #research #freespeech #nih #PhD #stem

Read this 22-post thread on how academic, NIH-based, and private sector research, with and without NIH funding, have worked together to develop a novel pain medication that acts outside the brain, reducing its addictive potential and helping to address the opioid crisis.

@annikabarber.bsky.social, who researches the circadian rhythms of fruit flies, said basic research like hers helps "fill the pipeline" of scientific knowledge, allowing scientists 20 years from now to develop treatments for things like traumatic brain injuries. www.usatoday.com/story/news/p...

Proud to be a constituent. Thanks Patty Murray! It makes me feel like all my emails are having the intended effect.

Apologies for this long post I put together to explain to non-scientists the impact of NIH cuts: Last night, an “atomic bomb” was dropped on the biomedical science community. We were informed that effective immediately, indirect costs on NIH grants (both current and future) would be fixed at 15%.

BioPhysicists, remember to renew your membrship, and please nominate yourself or a deserving colleague for BPS Awards, BPS Fellow, or Best Dissertation! @biophysicalsoc.bsky.social

Celebrating with my beloved a successful week of exceptional #science, brilliant #scientists, and supportive #community, at #bps2025 in LA!

Follow up story coming soon with more details on what happened with the NSF layoffs. In the meantime, here's a summary of the different layoffs that have happened at US regulatory and science funding agencies ⬇️

Most people I talk to in academia agree budget cuts (direct & indirect) facing science funding from both the executive branch & parts of congress pose a potentially existential threat to the American research enterprise. But I haven’t heard any vision for countering that threat. 1/5

Or - let’s get rid of academic publishers and the BILLIONS in open access fees spent each year

This is a great way to get our story out in a very personal way that will make the story human!

We all owe @jeremymberg.bsky.social a debt of gratitude for his work in clarifying, connecting, and advocating for science in this chaotic time. 🙏🏼

The Trump Administration is maintaining the NIH grant freeze despite lawsuits challenging the order, a Nature article reported today. Science funding in the US is already lagging, leaving researchers in limbo. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Unfortunately, even closed FACA meetings need to be announced in the Federal Register so that public knows they are occurring even if they cannot attend.

When the march of science slows, we all pay the price. Our patients and communities depend on the results of NIH-funded research for better diagnosis, treatment, and cures. www.pbs.org/newshour/sho...

I've never cared about the federal register so much in my life, and, if you're a scientist, so should you!!!

I totally crashed this one! @renaeryan.bsky.social @francesbiophys.bsky.social @frettinglab.bsky.social, Gail, and Teresa. #BPS2025

Happy Birthday Frances! @francesbiophys.bsky.social 🎶🕺🥳

So long #BPS2025!

At the @biophysicalsoc.bsky.social Town Hall, I appreciated learning that 5calls.org is a helpful, free online tool. I tried it for the first time, and it really was super easy. I can verify it took me only 5 min to call my rep and my congresswomen. This is something we can commit to doing every day

One more time, Thank you Sudha and Chris for an inspiring, energising, and productive #BPS2025! I am already looking forward to #BPS2026 in SF. @biophysicalsoc.bsky.social @chakrapanilab.bsky.social @cyclocrossguy.bsky.social

Yes! We had a packed room! Now each of us needs to do our part and (1) Call our reps EVERY DAY to express our support for science; and (2) Find our communication currency to chat with our non-science colleagues to explain the many positive impacts of science. #BPS2025 @biophysicalsoc.bsky.social

Fabulous science at #BPS2025! I owe a BIG debt of gratitude to @cyclocrossguy.bsky.social and to @chakrapanilab.bsky.social!

Huge thanks to all our international colleagues for their message of solidarity! @biophysicalsoc.bsky.social @emmanuelmargeat.bsky.social

Packed auditorium at #BPS2025 for an Emergency Town Hall to find together constructive, positive, creative actions we can take NOW to ADVOCATE for science!
