Uhhhhhh www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Genuinely couldn't believe this figure until I saw the Financial Times confirm it using Meta's own financial reporting data For THIS $100 billion is genuinely the kind of money you could "do the impossible" with. Crack nuclear fusion. HIV vaccine. Universal flu vaccine And they spent it on this

The history books and dystopian fantasy never seem to include how embarrassing fascists are

New: DOGE's spending has been secret. No longer. My colleagues have uncovered it. www.propublica.org/article/doge...

People saying ‘they should run for office’ every time someone engages in conscientious acts of potential sacrifice like civil disobedience need to have a bigger imagination than ‘they should join the hive mind’. No. *You* should join them in engaging in civil disobedience.

You never imagine the descent into despotism being quite this embarrassing, you know? You expect liberal democracy to fall to a Palpatine, not Biff Tannen.

been waiting for what feels like my entire life to post this

You know, struggling with executive function while being generally kind of clever and well-spoken has given me a life where many people tell me "you're the smartest person I know" while I feel like an absolute idiot because I can't make myself get up and do the dishes.

While most "you couldn't make that today" complaints are just whining about natural & inexorable shifts in cultural mores over time, one show that I genuinely think you would not be allowed to produce or market today is Captain Planet and I think it's interesting that nobody ever says so.

It's been clear for years that this would happen. I've been pushing for universal basic income for over a decade, as Mark should have too. People are afraid. They're economically insecure. Tech has been growing inequality and leaving people behind. Meanwhile, AI was trained on all OUR data and work.

it’s been said a million times but it’s still astounding that google went from so reliable a company that its name replaced the word “search” to…..this

"Make no mistake - this is a coup" * * immediately leaves DC for another 4-day weekend

I hope that if Dems ever take back the white house, they have the political will to just put the government back together through executive power and not depend on congress to restore it.

Don't post AI slop. And if you repost by mistake, as I've done, delete it. When you have something to say and attach AI art, you're undercutting your message and hurting artists. Pay or barter for art. There's a reason good things cost money and take time. AI art is harmful and it looks like ass.

Happy Presidents' Day, everyone. www.youtube.com/watch?v=qv6O...

hakeem jeffries is so much worse at his job than nancy pelosi it's making me question my war on the gerontocracy

Couldn't be clearer that Democrats aren't a party in the way that Republicans are a party. The GOP has an ideological project. They build power to accomplish specific things. The project of the Democratic Party is getting Democrats reelected. 80-90+% of Congress is, so it doesn't take much effort.
