WaPo is 147 years old. It's basically an American institution. It's now been destroyed by a billionaire. The Constitution is 236 years old It's now being trampled on by a billionaire. The problem with unfettered capitalism is that it becomes authoritarian oligarchy.

It is awful enough having such a shamelessly transphobic associate editor but this is yet another level… beyond the pale…

I’m increasingly pessimistic on Labour’s chances of turning things round. Not because it’s beyond their power to do so - I’ve posted a lot about how they could - but because they’re determined to make wrong choices. Old, failed ideas, no real strategy, timidity, intellectual cowardice. Not good.

NEW: David Miliband joins the growing backlash to Keir Starmer's decision to cut the aid budget to boost defence spending. He says: "The global consequences of this decision will be far reaching and devastating for people who need more help not less."

Don’t ever let Starmer defend this Aid cut as ‘needing to make hard decisions’. It’s the reverse. Reducing support for the voiceless is the very easiest, most cowardly path he could have taken.

Amazing atmosphere and presence at London rally for Ukraine in Trafalgar Square this evening. I was proud to speak earlier in Parliament to offer staunch Lib Dem support for UK leadership in opposing Putin. Three years after the illegal full-scale assault by Russia, the UK stands with Ukraine.

The US just voted alongside Russia, Belarus and North Korea against a UN resolution to support Ukraine. This is a wake-up call for all those cheerleading Trump in our country.

For three years, the brave Ukrainian people have heroically defended their country against Putin’s war machine. Now, more than ever, we must stand firmly in support of our Ukrainian friends, resist Trump's stitch up with Putin and work with our European neighbours to defend freedom and democracy.

Merz v.firm on European independence from US. Dovish Scholz not going to be part of coalition talks, opening space for more hawkish Pistorius. Stable grand coalition possible. Europe is much stronger today. And yet most reporters are unable to see beyond their pre-written 'AfD triumphant' headline.

AfD at 19.5% in the German exit polls would, weirdly, be a pretty big disappointment for them. Yes, it’s much better than their 2021 result. But it would be a distant second place, only slightly ahead of the SPD, and below their polling. Did Musk/Vance hurt their performance?

This is the most wretched campaign of deliberate, explicit persecution the United States has perpetrated against a minority group in decades. Many of the most important people in politics and journalism are busying themselves trying to figure out how little to say or do about it.

I'm not having Fraser Nelson playing dumb on the rise of racism on the right after years spent printing Murray, Liddle, Taki and Shriver. I literally had a DM row with him years ago where I said this would happen.

The UK government really doesn't get how to promote the tech industry. Breaking encryption on iCloud sends a signal that you don't get tech - in a way that is unhelpful to govt. aims like promoting tech investment and high skilled immigration.

There's a rumour that Nigel Farage is keeping his head down because he's off to a Trump cheerleading conference over the weekend. I’m afraid I’m being proved right- Farage is far more interested in Trump's success than British security. He is a bootlicker and a plastic patriot.

When the PM visits the White House next week, he must challenge Trump on his Ukraine lies in the strongest possible terms. It's alarming to see the leader of the free world parroting Putin's propaganda. Trump spoke in Mar-a-Lago but his words could have been written in Moscow.

Donald Trump is the President of the United States and the Spokesperson for Vladimir Putin. Only we in the UK and Europe will protect Ukraine.

A sad but fond farewell to Zoe earlier today - she arrived at my parents as a rescue cat and spent the next 16 years with us. She was healthy right until the end of her long life, leaving us at 18-20 years of age (exact age unknown, but 18 and over for definite) Bye bye Zoe, sleep well x 🌈 🐈‍⬛ ❤️

Face of a man who has now lost 30kg since early October! (You might have to wait a little longer for the next in series - 40kg loss - as naturally it is taking longer the more I lose!)

Ukraine's independence and territorial integrity are unconditional. Our priority must now be strengthening Ukraine and providing robust security guarantees. In any negotiation, Europe must have a central role. Our Weimar+ statement ↓

I’m calling for a Youth Mobility Scheme with Europe—just like we have with Australia and Canada—to let 18-30-year-olds live, work, and gain experience across the EU. Read my piece in Sussex Bylines 👇

The moment Estonia disconnected its power grid from Russia has been shared online. A historic step toward energy independence.

The Government is now deliberately conflating a UK-EU Youth Mobility Scheme with a return to freedom of movement to justify its position it would cross their Brexit red lines. THATS JUST PLAIN WRONG Our youth deserve better and UK News Shows need to start calling this out youtu.be/1y2RbbUg06c?...

As I've said before - what actually makes Wes Streeting a Labour MP? It's not his economics, it's not his trade unionism, it's certainly not his love for public services. As he parrots the American far right yet again I'm just left wondering why anyone in the party tolerates this shit.

Delighted that our campaigning, and that of the whole Newcastle Liberal Democrats team, seems to have had some impact on water pollution in the Ouseburn. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... Will keep an eye on this as they submit a planning application and then move to the delivery phase.

Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves claim to be looking everywhere for opportunities for growth but are ignoring the solution right under their noses. A new UK-EU Customs Union would turbocharge our economy, tearing down the trade barriers holding British businesses back.

Between this and the wilful ignoring of pleas to save UKHE, one has to wonder what future @teamlabouruk.bsky.social thinks young people will have.

“Elon Musk said the British Gov’t, elected by the British people just a few months ago, should be overthrown..Elon Musk has to be held to account” Sir Ed Davey 👏

This is, by some distance, the most unforgivably stupidest thing the government is doing. An easily sellable proposal, which would actually help Brits, and unlocks meaningful negotiation. Irrational and anti-growth.

#SpanielSunday - and Molly’s “waiting for a piece of my toast” look

It look like @wesstreeting.bsky.social “has sympathy for” a group of parents who torture their children because they are trans. Anyone who thinks Labour’s proposed conversion therapy ban is going to be anything other than a total sham, is deluding themselves. www.wearequeeraf.com/revealed-str...

Today is the first day of LGBT History Month LGBT+ people have always been part of our societies, but often their stories are hidden and go untold. This month is an opportunity to celebrate those stories and continue to campaign for progress.

There is no reasonable defence for anyone still agreeing to appear on this channel bylinetimes.com/2025/01/31/g...

100 days since I embarked on a concerted effort to sort my weight out - still a long way to go but this is over 19% of my body weight lost in that time (and included Christmas and my birthday!)

Sticking to a bad idea out of stubbornness isn’t leadership. Labour have their heads in the sand - if they were serious about growth, they’d listen to @eddavey.libdems.org.uk and negotiate a new customs union.

Again, what is the point of Labour? They could fix this, but they choose not to. What do they think 10,000 Academic colleagues and Professional Support teams are going to do? You can't move from one institution to another if they're all making people redundant.

Wow, what is the point of Labour? The Tories proposed the Lower Dartford Crossing, a £9 billion traffic generating Jeavons Paradox And what do new Labour do? Look at funding it, instead of delivering HS2 anywhere North of Birmingham www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... Look for what's not mentioned

If you see this post a witch (this choice definitely dates me precisely 😂)

The next election is a whole US presidency away, probably. Far too soon for this kind of claim about what the polls do and do not show, beyond 'the official opposition are not yet convincing people as an alternative to the government, so disgruntled voters are looking elsewhere'.

Hadn’t forgotten it was #SpanielSunday today! This is my view when Molly gets up on me for a post-walk pamper

I think you can't help but be pleased to see Madison Keys finally win a Slam - and boy she did it the hard way - beating the top 2 seeds one after the other, plus several top 10 seeds and former GS winners and finalists #AustralianOpen

Why is the government happy to cosy up to China, but won't even look at a better customs deal with our closest neighbours in Europe? Ministers say they’re looking everywhere for growth but are ignoring what is staring them in the face.

"We cannot leave it to the Musks and Zuckerbergs of this world to set the bounds of free speech for billions of people around the world. "We cannot leave it to them to control the flow of information – and misinformation – to so many voters, in so many democracies." @eddavey.libdems.org.uk

Tell me you're not serious about achieving economic growth, without saying you're not serious about economic growth... The same tired tune from the Government of Disappointment...

Darren Jones might be being pragmatic by necessity but he is wrong on his facts - it was no massive victory with one of the narrowest popular vote wins in history… this government continues to disappoint on so many levels (including basic public honesty) - and Khan has it exactly right here
