a similar version of this concept was used IRL as a 1692 lycanthropy trial defense by Thiess of Kaltenbrun. he tl;dr admitted to being a werewolf, but claimed that he and others were "hounds of god" and would travel to hell and kill demons. they just exiled him, instead of executing him.

the part that I disliked was frieren changing from that weird slowpaced floaty journey to a more standard arc later on tbh. didn't get that far in the anime tho
I think the pacing is intentional in frieren's case, but not at all in SNK

I love so much of the actual lore of the TES setting, it's a real shame that almost none of it made it into skyrim.
modding it adds so many layers of complexity to it, too, like nobody who's modded it heavily has even remotely similar experiences

dwarf fortress, and any of the games that take heavy inspiration from it. (minecraft, rimworld, etc)
especially the survival and creative aspects.
for a game that initially came out 20 years ago it's only grown in replayability, too :)
