www.nature.com/articles/s41... does anyone want to place bets on whether this Scientific Reports @natureportfolio.nature.com paper is from a paper mill? (e.g. scienceintegritydigest.com/2020/02/21/t...) Suspicious title, suspicious figures, disconnect between author affiliations & subject, ...

Science-integrity project will root out bad medical papers ‘and tell everyone’ Thrilled to announce this new $900,000 project headed by @jamesheathers.bsky.social

Phage people: Rich Losick and I are combing the world looking for T4 rIIB mutant FC0 (also known as P13). FC0 was the starting point for Francis Crick's beautiful 1961 paper on the triplet nature of the genetic code. We want to sequence it. Anyone have it in an ancient stock collection?

International researchers, can you spend your valuable time reviewing one of NZ's premier and most competitive research grants? 🤔

It is increasingly difficult to justify the time writing and reviewing these. It's embarrassing they are sent to international colleagues who waste their valuable evaluating tiny projects.

Don't forget, it's Murderbot Night.

This is so peak New Zealand. #NZLabLife www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/3607...

The Dutch budget for the transition to Open Science was 20 million per year. Due to budget cuts, it now is 'only' 10 million a year. Yesterday they launched a 3 million euro metascience call to contribute to the evidence base for open science. This is what a tiny but well-functioning country does.

This is terrible news, HMMER & Infernal are at the heart of DBs like Pfam, Rfam & Dfam. And vital pipelines such as AlphaFold.

There is no "science-wide replication crisis" because every word in that phrase carries unfounded assumptions. 🧵 1. There is no evidence that progress has generally stalled in the sciences. Also, no one has actually tried to estimate replicability across fields.

Hi folks, Ani is making a big deal out of @health.govt.nz being on Bluesky. Let's take a communal crap on her bollocks by ensuring Manatū Hauora gets a sizeable following, ne?

Two academic (lecturer) positions available at the University of Otago in Aotearoa/New Zealand! One in Conservation Biology, another in Evolutionary Ecology. Links for positions below: otago.taleo.net/careersectio... otago.taleo.net/careersectio...

It pains me to say this, but if you are not a US citizen, you should not attend scientific conferences in the US, visit US institutions, or otherwise travel to our country. Right now it's not worth the risk. Hopefully that will change. If it doesn't, science in the US is sunk anyway.

It's time!!! An entire session of #eshg2025 on snRNA genes ❤️🤓

Oh no!

Get your CVs updated. Zoology Department, University of Otago is hiring a Lecturer in Evolutionary Ecology! @zoologyotago.bsky.social otago.taleo.net/careersectio...

But wait... there's more... Zoology Department, University of Otago is hiring a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Conservation Biology too! @zoologyotago.bsky.social otago.taleo.net/careersectio...

Some very light editing of the Sboner et al "The real cost of sequencing: higher than you think!" figure for my undergraduates: genomebiology.biomedcentral.com/articles/10....

The human pangenome continues to grow and improve! Release 2 is here! Click through for the details, but this is a pretty amazing dataset including not just the phased assemblies, but PacBio HiFi, ONT Ultralong, Dovetail/Illumina Hi-C, PacBio Kinnex, and Illumina WGS for all samples

Happy Otago morning. 🙂

Bioinformatics folks: check out our @biorxivpreprint on a new, very efficient and accurate system for automated genome annotation, EviAnn, led by my colleague Aleksey Zimin: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

As grant money starts drying up, it's more important than ever not to waste it on paying publishers' open access "article processing fees" when we can host PDFs for free. Tom Morgan and I wrote a paper on this, forthcoming at Science and Public Policy. Accepted draft here: osf.io/preprints/os...

How is it that funding agencies don't understand how inflation works? The fucking grocers do...
