An ode to beneficial insects: Never shall I spray you With poisons or cruel toxins You're part of this garden And I need you where you are 🌱🐌πŸͺ²πŸ¦‹πŸ

Today I made strawberry ice cream from ingredients almost entirely sourced from the surrounding 15 miles. And with such an emphasis on local, I didn't even want to waste the strawberry tops. Luckily I had some friends on hand to eat them! πŸŒ±πŸ“πŸ¦ŽπŸ”

Beautiful spring flowers. 🌱🌸🌷

These girls are doing the hard work right now. The puppy, on the other hand, is eating all of my asparagus. πŸŒ±πŸ”πŸΆ

A few photos from around the yard, including one particularly nasty (and impressive) weed. πŸŒ±πŸŒπŸ“

Our Black Australorps have been laying (relatively) huge eggs compared to the Speckled Sussexes. In theory both should be making "medium" eggs but apparently Biggs and Wedge didn't get the memo! πŸ”πŸŒ±πŸ₯š

Native plant gardening (in the US at least) can be really hard. Not everyone sees the beauty in it and of course the blooms are very seasonal. But I can see how lovely it's all going to be. Native blueberries, slender mountain mint, prairie phlox, and a grasshopper friend I found while weeding. 🌱

Here come the flowers! Lots of buds. - Fava beans up close - Blueberries - Pomegranate - Native Coral Honeysuckle

Finally home after being away for more than a week, and it sure does look like spring down here! Baby fig leaves, blueberries about to bloom, a good radish harvest! Good yard. 🌱

Got to meet the alpacas herd that my friend has! They're pretty great. Not necessarily going the alpaca route myself but I'm going to lightly "apprentice" for a while to learn as much as I can about livestock. πŸŒ±πŸ¦™πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎ

I'm out of town but I got this photo that my fava beans are blooming! 🌱

I wrote to my congresspeople. I'm making the text public in case anyone would like to use parts of it. Fill in with your own state as needed. πŸ›οΈβœοΈ

Homegrown lemons! Going to do my best to preserve them well or use up as much as possible. Juicing and zesting and candying the peels. #lemon #gardening πŸŒ±πŸ‹

I overdid it a bit yesterday with yardwork, housework, and cooking/baking. But the plants sure look happy, including tiny spinach sprouts. And these croutons (from homemade bread) are awesome. Link to recipe is in the comments.

A heads up - you won't see as much activism on my page because I'm spending most of my day at work on climate activism, EDIB, protecting natural resources, etc. But trust me that I am angry about what's happening, I'm fighting, and I'm not going to shut up about what our vulnerable populations need.

Today the Merlin app thought my chickens were a pileated woodpecker. Usually it just thinks they're mallards or Canada geese, this was a new one. πŸͺΆπŸ”

This last year I grew both Genovese (green) basil and purple opal basil. Of course I knew that the seeds for the purple opal would be hybridized. The babies are a super cute mix. I'm hoping to continue to hybridize it (with itself) to see what I get! 🌱

If I could turn the intensity of the stares from Chicken Judgement straight at the executive branch - heck, let's say the entire federal government - I sure would.

Sometimes I wonder whether other vegetarian chicken owners joke this much about eating their flock. At least daily here.

The golden dragonflies are back!!! πŸœπŸ¦—πŸͺ²πŸπŸžπŸ¦‹πŸ›
