here's what you can do to derail Schedule F and restore an independent civil service: donmoynihan.substack.com/p/a-tangible...

Sen. Van Hollen and his meeting with Abrego Garcia in El Salvador is all over the news and social media. Joe Rogan is talking about the value of due process, wrongly denied to Abrego Garcia. Thankfully the “just poll, then do what’s already popular, never try to lead or shape opinion” crowd lost.

🧪 Tip: You have the right to contest a grant termination, even though NSF says you don't. 🧵 On Friday, NSF terminated 402 grants (per Musk's DOGE). The notification letters had one of the most egregious violations of fed regulations I've seen so far in these cases: "not subject to appeal"

Beyond vital political stakes, it also looks like admin misread the narrative, too. They tried to pitch “MS-13 illegal” and assumed story would end there. Instead it’s become a daily, episodic, human-interest and court drama about a wrongfully deported loving husband, union-member and caregiver.

It appears that OMB appears to be trying to eliminate the National Weather Service (all regional centers ran out of money this week.) Another opportunity for me to re-post an earlier piece: www.cnn.com/2020/09/14/o...

BREAKING: SCOTUS orders the government not to remove anyone from the United States under Trump’s Alien Enemies Act proclamation who is a part of the potential class in the Northern District of Texas case until further order of the court. Only Thomas and Alito note their dissent.

An unnamed CFPB employee who participated in the agency's layoff decisions says in a sworn statement that its leaders were aware that their approach violated a court order and instructed them to proceed anyway. "All that mattered was the numbers."

Van Hollen: I should also just say, I mentioned the fake margarita, they actually wanted to have the meeting by the side of the pool in the hotel. They want to create this appearance that life was just lovely for Kilmar. Which of course is a big, fat lie.

This apparently has to do with the fact that Grants Management Specialists now have to justify every payment (not just every grant, but every reimbursement) and the process for managing this is not yet set up (or at least that it my current understanding)...

This is what happens when the Supreme Court effectively allows a bunch of teenage losers to take over the #NIH payment system. This is also what Viktor Orban did as he consolidated autocracy in Hungary: he centralized control over money and payments. This is truly a red alert.

A federal judge has ruled that five government agencies must release billions in funding for climate and infrastructure projects paused under Trump.   Judge Mary McElroy — a Trump appointee — issued the temporary injunction. It instructs the admin to release the funds while a lawsuit proceeds.

Steve Kerr wore a Harvard basketball shirt after the Warriors’ win tonight: “Yes, this is me supporting Harvard. Way to go. Way to stand up to the bully.”

"Yesterday, we received notice from the federal government that our grant had been terminated and part of the reasoning was that we no longer align with the White House policies.” African-American history museum in Boston worried about future as its federal grant is cut

This was my classmate. He was a student in my ethics class, and we used to sit next to each other. Most dedicated person in the class to legitimate justice for all people. He legitimately cared. I am so horribly heartbroken

I am hearing from my state rep that Mohsen is still in Vermont, thanks to the efforts of many. I had the privilege of meeting Mohsen once and hearing him speak about his life. I hope his persecutors face justice one day.

BREAKING: Days after a Louisiana judge ruled that the deportation of Mahmoud Khalil can proceed, thousands are holding an emergency Passover Seder at the ICE headquarters in New York City, saying: If you come for one, you face us all.

SCOOP: Columbia student Mohsen Mahdawi went into an interview today hoping he would come out a U.S. citizen. Instead, ICE arrested him. theintercept.com/2025/04/14/i...

My new post mapping out 69 actions that President Trump has taken in the last twelve weeks to undermine democracy, undermine the rule of law, attack enemies, suppress dissent and control information. Do read and share. Full 🧵 tomorrow hopefully! christinapagel.substack.com/p/a-republic...

When the Trump regime dismantles agencies like HHS the health consequences for Americans becomes life & death. Stand up fight back & join us at a campus near you for one of our rolling Summer Sendoff actions heading into the SUFS Summer Campaign bit.ly/SUFSActionNe.... #SUFS #SaveHHS #SavePRAMS

Remember Fiona Hill? She’s now sounding the alarm again: “We’re definitely on a path toward full-on state repression. There’s no question about it. I’ve thought about this for an extraordinarily long time.” When Fiona speaks, we should all listen.

Yesterday they refused to answer two of the three questions ordered. Today's refuses to address, in any way, all three. None of this has anything to do with the order. This is open defiance of a district court backed by a unanimous three-judge circuit ruling and a unanimous 9-0 Supreme Court ruling.

“They’re trying to overwhelm us. We gotta whelm them the other way!” So says Wichita Falls. I agree!!

Every thing you do, no matter how small, to remind people that the wannabe dictators are actually sad, scared, fallible little boys is helpful. The more we laugh at them, the less fearsome they are and the easier it is to wrest power back from them. Also? These messages are effing hilarious.

"Staff at the National Institutes of Health have separately been informed that DOGE will have new authorities to review and approve NOFOs [Notices Of Funding Opportunities] issued by the biomedical agency, according to an NIH employee and meeting records" wapo.st/42uavRC

'Something is happening generally in America,” she said. “Something bad is happening. I don’t think everybody understands.”

Jeneen Interlandi at @nytimes.com nails it. This is senseless destruction. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/11/o...

Trump has perfected the art of Pareto Worsening, a change in allocation making at least one person worse off without making a single person better off. Trade war, Medicaid cuts, science cuts, there are no winners here, only losers.

Evil, evil, evil

interesting how rapidly academic freedom and free speech disappeared from the conversation after dominating it for years and years www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

This is a recipe for financially ruining U.S. research universities: 1) Vastly and rapidly reduce funding for research and infrastructure; 2) Scare international students, whose tuition helps fund PhD students (as TAs), away. These folks know exactly what they're doing.

I wrote about Trump cuts at the ends of the Earth, to NSF support of science in Antarctica. 🧪 “We’re all trying to find other ways of doing our research,” says @leighstearns.bsky.social, “because they are not the stable entity.” www.nature.com/articles/d41...

It's hard to see what is happening unless you pull back the lens, read @ruthbenghiat.bsky.social and others on autocrats and centers of knowledge and expertise. Once you recognize it, a chill should go down your spine. www.thenation.com/article/soci...

-Trump bans the AP from the White House press pool -Judge orders AP be allowed back into the pool -Trump admin continues to block AP from the pool, and then censors the pool report noting the AP was turned away. Great reporting from @oliverdarcy.bsky.social www.status.news/p/white-hous...

cognitive dissonance. very common with victims of con artists - it's less painful to come up with a clever explanation for why you didn't actually get conned than to admit that you got conned.
