Hi, @motherjones.com disabled disability reporter here, I really want to hear about how tariffs are impacting disabled, chronically ill, and aging folks. Reposts appreciated and my email is [email protected].

that's all

So you’re saying we could solve all the financial problems of 379 million of us and impact just 19 households. What an interesting fact. Fun little bit of trivia.

Fun fact: federal courts have the power to deputize others, such as state or local law enforcement or even in theory private citizens, if the marshals are unable or unwilling to enforce an order.

Ah so we're going from the police becoming an occupying force to just having the military doing the occupying. Cutting out the middleman, I see.

I thought this was all funny, but at the end of the day what happened was conversation was briefly democratized, mostly on Twitter, in a medium in which verbal cleverness was almost as good a currency as wealth and power, elites got owned, and then they took the conversation private. That’s bad lol.

I first heard about some of this in Dawn of Everything and it made me so inspired & angry at the same time. Inequality isn’t the inevitable side effect of some progress. It’s a choice.

It's not about bringing a viable criminal case. It's about manufacturing a negative image of judges.

A grandma who works at Target. An advocate for farmworkers. A cancer researcher. A grad student who wrote an op-ed. A hairdresser. A sheet metal worker and loving father to an autistic child. At least two people who took a wrong turn on the same bridge in Detroit. A toddler.

NEW: A federal judge raised alarm Friday that the Trump administration appeared to have deported a 2-year-old U.S. citizen to Honduras with "no meaningful process" — even as her father was fighting to keep her in the country. Details w/ @joshgerstein.bsky.social www.politico.com/news/2025/04...

Seeing @noaa.gov pushing propaganda valorizing deep sea mining makes me feel physically ill. Another one of our most essential scientific institutions decimated by fascism.

Let’s be clear. Trump's arrest of Judge Dugan in Milwaukee has nothing to do with immigration. This latest attack is about one thing: unchecked power. It is time for my colleagues in the Republican Party to stand up to his growing authoritarianism.

Notice how this makes racism a matter of “getting along” rather than the denial of rights and resources to a whole class of people. Also notice, how you’re may be doing the same thing when you term racism as a “distraction.”

Removing a black 4-star general at Secretary of Defense and replacing him with a white talk-show is the perfect example why DEI is essential. It's not about hiring unqualified minorities, it’s about foiling the majority's habit of hooking up under qualified mediocrities of their own caste.

nothing to add to this beyond how very clear it is that every generation finds a new way to suggest that only certain people get to be in certain places, and it is the job of the rest of us in each generation to tell those people which lake they are welcome to jump into

Sitting with the data that -- Black people are 3.23x as likely as white people to be killed during a police encounter Black women are 3x more likely to die of a pregnancy or postpartum-related cause than white women. Tripled violence, tripled harms.

he’s right and he’s right to say it

It kinda feels like 1877 and 1929 all at once doesn’t it.

Any efforts to take down disparate impact, even if mired in court, will essentially kill all efforts to make AI systems less biased. We know what happens when we don't mitigate bias in AI, and I can assure it's not meritocracy and equality of opportunity.

"Attorney General shall initiate appropriate action to repeal or amend the implementing regulations for Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 for all agencies" What's Title VI? "prohibits discrimination against or otherwise excluding individuals on the basis of race, color, or national origin"

Told yall it would happe

i think people are missing the forest for the trees with this one. RFK Jr wants complete centralized knowledge of every American's health in order to exact control on what medications are allowed and in order to fabricate "evidence" for each and all of his nonsense theories.

#tdih 1914: National Guard fired on Colorado tent colony of striking miners. Howard Zinn learned of the Ludlow story from Woody Guthrie ballad, not his history classes, leading Zinn to write and teach people's history. #TeachTruth Short film and more ⬇️ www.zinnedproject.org/news/tdih/lu...

Just now learning about how after Finnish workers in Minnesota went on strike, there was pseudoscience invented classifying them as racially Asian to make them easier to deport, to the point of the proliferation of the slur “China-Swedes”

Ok so yeah, this has quickly become the #1 misunderstanding about the canceled grants the grants are not “subsidies” or “entitlements” to Harvard or Princeton or whatever they aren’t going into universities’ endowments they are competitive contracts won by these universities to do research

Can confirm that my NSF grant "How False Beliefs Form & How to Correct Them" was cancelled today because it is "not in alignment with current NSF priorities" Shocking that understanding how people are misled by false information is now a forbidden topic. Our work will continue but at a smaller scale

You all need to treat Harry Potter IP like we’re treating the Tesla brand.

France finally acknowledged the debt they owe Haiti. This is just the beginning of something. I'm gonna republish the feed. This is important. www.nbcnews.com/news/world/f...

Mayor Brandon Johnson introduced an ordinance aimed to protect neighbors from disproportionate effects of pollution, but the measure was sent to Rules Committee. buff.ly/PmRgWD9

Every morning I read the news and something else reminds me of Robert Musil saying in 1930s Germany that one of the defining aspects of fascism was the mockery of compassion

When Clive Barker was working on the MUMMY remake for Universal in the early '90s, he had a trans character in the script, and when the studio vetoed it, he basically said "I really can't stress how much I don't need to fucking make THE MUMMY" and left.

Retail isn't coming back. We need to be permanently pedestrianizing parts of the Loop immediately instead of giving the cops extra powers to harass Black kids. Making downtown a place people actually want to hang out is what will actually deter crime but hey, why not do racism instead

Always.

RFK’s demon voice was engineered in a lab to trigger sound sensitivity so he’s really offensive to autistic people on basically every level.

BREAKING 🚨 🚨 🚨 Pentagon’s ‘SWAT team of nerds’ resigns en masse Employees of a defense tech unit say they were sidelined by DOGE. “Either we die quickly or we die slowly,” says the director. www.politico.com/news/2025/04...

Bukele has already returned migrants to the U.S. because they were from Central America or they were women—migrants the Trump admin had unilaterally declared as “criminals.” This is all a joke to them. It’s truly sick.

Yeah, this is maybe the only story I've seen that actually describes the work of the people trying to dismantle higher ed.

Just got word from my college roommate - who is the state archivist for the state of South Dakota - that due to the DOGE shutdowns of IMLS, they can no longer fund InterLibrary Loan in SD. This means exchange between libraries, ability to get books delivered across the system, is gone as of 4/30.

The president told a Central American dictator to build five more massive slave labor camps to hold US citizens.

Dr. Christiansen names the most dangerous game the Trump regime is playing - they're betting they can kill public science agencies like #NASA at its root, and thus forever.

😡😡😡

"The left went too far" in contemporary U.S. politics is almost always a lie and a very convenient way to rationalize moral failure. For example, "MeToo went too far" replaces "I do not care about sexual violence or its victims and I don't want to have to even feel bad about that"

Not enough people talk about growing into adulthood, expecting to discover that your childhood assessments of adults were way off course, only to find that your ten and eleven year old self were right the whole time.

us government went from telling miners “learn to code” to telling coders “learn to mine” in less than ten years
