US politics is a mess, so here's a timeline cleanse w/ new research on Japanese politics: @shirokuriwaki.bsky.social, @yusakuhoriuchi.bsky.social and I have an updated paper on the role of policy vs. valence in LDP dominance. Now with 2024 election results! papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Please feel free to use the following data to aggregate basic demographic and fiscal statistics at the level of single-member districts used in Japan's 2017, 2021, and 2024 Lower House elections. github.com/yhoriuchi/sm...

Kind of jarring for one of a certain age to read of "Japan's audacious bid to become a semiconductor superpower" given its past as, well, an "audacious semiconductor superpower." on.ft.com/3OE1Bdt @dcsneider.bsky.social @davidleheny.bsky.social @profdansmith.bsky.social @sheilasmithcfr.bsky.social

I've been reposting good accounts to follow but @kfriedhoff.bsky.social, @benjaminaengel.bsky.social, and @minseonku.bsky.social are providing great realtime analysis of Yoon's declaration of martial law.

What??? This is unexpected and I guess will backfire on Yoon.

Tragic news: a fire at the home of Japanese upper house member Kuniko Inoguchi (a Yale political science PhD). Her husband (political scientist Takashi Inoguchi) and a daughter may have perished in the fire. My deepest condolences to the Inoguchi family. www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/11...

A fun read! Seems like @dieworkwear.bsky.social is also a fan of the social sciences…

Join us online tonight, 8 pm ET, for another JPOSS: "Japan Decides 2024: A Preliminary Analysis of the Japanese General Election," featuring @kmcelwain.bsky.social, Ko Maeda, Tetsuya Matsubayashi, and Amy Catalinac. Registration: jposs.org/event/japan-...

In 2022 & 2023 DSP collaborated with various scholars to collect data about candidates for national legislative (and sometimes subnational) elections in Australia, Brazil, Colombia, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Nepal, Philippines, Tunisia, and the USA. #polisky 1/4

In Przeworski’s theory “democracy is best understood as a game where players pursue power and resolve conflicts through elections rather than brute force. Democracies thrive when politicians believe they are better off playing by the rules to maximize self-interest… 🎁 www.nytimes.com/2024/10/29/m...

With @yusakuhoriuchi.bsky.social, @shirokuriwaki.bsky.social & Shusei Eshima, I've conducted survey experiments w/ voters in recent Japanese election campaigns. Compared to 2021, 2024 shows a big drop in reported trust of the LDP. The LDP appears to have lost its valence advantage. #JapanDecides2024

📣 New article w/ Masataka Harada & Gaku Ito, open access at Political Behavior. We show how to use cell-phone mobility data to study turnout in small areas and other situations where official data aren't available. link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Seems like "the narrative" emerging in media is that the LDP's election loss might bring instability and uncertainty (and that's scary). But to me that seems infantilizing of Japan and its ability to accomplish anything without LDP dominance. #JapanDecides2024 www.nytimes.com/2024/10/28/o...

One interesting aspect of the ruling parties' loss in Japan's election is that turnout was low (53.85%, 3rd lowest postwar). Usually low turnout is good for the LDP & Komeito, because of advantages in the organized (interest group) vote. www3.nhk.or.jp/news/html/20...

Japan's ruling coalition lost its majority in today's election, the most interesting/exciting since 2009. Now, there will have to be post-election coalition negotiations, for the first time since the 1990s. www.reuters.com/world/asia-p...

This new article by Valentin Figueroa reports evidence that proportional electoral rules increase turnout, w/ a case (Argentina) from Latin America, where past studies failed to find a relationship b/w proportionality & turnout. Nice! 👏 @cpsjournal.bsky.social journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....

If anyone is preparing a survey related to the upcoming election in Japan on Oct 27 and has set up questions in Qualtrics to identify the single-member district based on each respondent's place of residence, it would be extremely helpful if you could share the QDF file!
