But Biden had a stutter that reemerged as he aged

Interesting piece from @lollardfish.bsky.social & @profgabriele.com (as always) slate.com/news-and-pol...

slate.com/news-and-pol... “This particular faux-medieval aesthetic depicts wealth and power while criticizing a certain other—more tech-y, maybe more tacky, definitely more male—version of wealth and power.” @lollardfish.bsky.social @profgabriele.com #medievalsky

The New Middle Ages What castlecore and romantasy are doing with medievalism. by @profgabriele.com and @lollardfish.bsky.social (who I just got to talk to last night on @skiffyandfanty.com ) at Slate: slate.com/news-and-pol...

From yesterday: JACQUERIE NOW PLZ

ICYMI from yesterday! read about a cozy rebellion (of sorts) that uses the Middle Ages against techbros. #medievalsky

the one thing I will say here is that Dems are generally very bad at PERFORMING outrage/ anger and need to get better at it (they are also hamstrung by a media ecosystem that often buries what they do though!)

Oh it has a whole name: Murc's law. It's always been a thing (even before the name) but has become more... MORE in the last decade. whereofonecanspeak.com/2023/03/02/y...

hey! me & @lollardfish.bsky.social wrote this piece for @slate.bsky.social about what's hot in 2025, because it's the Middle Ages! we see a retreat to the medieval as a (tacit) act of resistance against techbro authoritarianism. find out why... please read and share #medievalsky

I don’t need this shit

none of these people have any concept of duty or decorum or service, all of them are absolute rat bastards who are unqualified to hold any job and should be ejected from any group of respectable americans.

Voters keep telling us over and over and over they believed things completely untethered to reality and based their votes on that. Misinformation is the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd stories of the election.

Such a smart take from my fave medieval authors! This is exactly why I love studying/re-imagining the past.

This is a really interesting one to ponder (possibly in the morning when I'm awake properly again)

And a third piece today: The NYT Style section declared this the year in which "medieval" was in. @profgabriele.com and I talk at @slate.bsky.social about what we think that means. More peasant revolt. Less King Arthur. slate.com/news-and-pol...

“This is a different way of using historical aesthetics than what you see from the tradwife community, which takes nostalgia for an imagined past seriously, or at least projects seriousness as part of its propaganda tool.”

fwiw i think we scholars should stop talking about "academic freedom" because it doesn't mean anything to anyone. let's talk about free speech rights for us, about bullying against us, etc. use words that will have political meaning.

I want to say again to academics who are interested in public writing. Look locally. Sure national outlets are good and I do that too, but this kind of visibility in your community can have a real impact.

holy shit

An excellent deep dive intp the dats behind FIRE's "campus free speech" rankings. You won't be surprised to learn they are bullshit, riddled with errors and willful misrepresentions. This is not a serious organization and we would stop treating it as such. www.chronicle.com/article/the-...

i wanna be direct. Steve Bannon is an alumnus of Virginia Tech and this university should revoke his degree.

So Oathbreakers was really really good! @profgabriele.com & @lollardfish.bsky.social I recommend!!

gravedigger of american democracy. a more malign influence than john c calhoun.
