Never have I ever been so thankful for the flu giving me an 8 o'clock bedtime

If you know of anyone thinking about geofence warrants (hello 4th Circuit) i just wrote a short piece on why they violate the Fourth Amendment. #law Everywhere Everything Searches (part of the GW JOLT Symposium). papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Magistrate judge in the 5th Circuit, asked to sign off on warrants for routine "tower dumps," declines to do, writing an opinion concluding that all tower dumps are likewise unconstitutional in light of the 5th Circuit's recent geofencing opinion. (Thread) storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

#PsychLaw people: who's attending #APLS2025 in March? I'll create a starter pack so attendees can find people here on Bluesky who might be posting from the conference.

As co-chair of a major academic conference that's happening in less than a month... crap.

Suspect signs consent form allowing state police to search her phone. Police extract contents but no charges brought. Later, they share extraction w/law enforcement in another state. CA9: 4A was violated. The copy retained all rights, & this exceeded consent. cdn.ca9.uscourts.gov/datastore/op... #N

Once again, I have structured my syllabi so we are discussing the same case in both classes I teach today (mental health law; capital punishment). I feel like I'm cheating at this whole professor thing.

At least there's one good thing in the world to look forward to. deadline.com/2025/02/buff...

@corybooker.com hello I used to run the Wendy’s Twitter account and I am begging you to let me help you with the dems social media strategy, I will literally do it for free at this point

Today's vibe:

Law-psych friends, just a reminder that registration for #APLS2025 is now open! Travel to PR can be steep & I'm seeing flight prices increase so book now. I have it on good authority this conference will be one of the best ever 🙂 ap-ls.org/conferences for more info!

Hundreds of police license plate cameras are misconfigured to stream unencrypted to the open internet. A privacy researcher took these streams and turned them into a real-time database that tracks car movements & information, highlighting how invasive this tech is www.404media.co/researcher-t...

My skeets weren't posting for two weeks but somehow everything I tried to post went through at once overnight. Sorry if "test skeet" flooded your feeds 😬

My goal for 2025 is to get back into reading solely for pleasure (not related to work at all). It's been so long I don't even know where to start or what I'd like, but I'm armed with a library card and the libby app at least

Horrific. Just hours before the Sugar Bowl, when Notre Dame and Georgia fans traveled from all over to come together. My heart breaks for my Notre Dame family, for Georgia, for the incredible city of New Orleans. There is far too much hate and ugliness in this world.

Thanks to all the presents people bought my kids, my house currently looks like Bluey and Spidey threw up all over it. Thankful for so many people who love my kids!

Merry Christmas!

For 4th Amendment nerds, especially those interested in the history of the 4A, this is a must-read article from Sophia Lee—unearthing previously unexplored Congressional debates about the 4th Amendd around the time of the 14th Amend's enactment—pre-Boyd. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Shoutout to my students taking their crim and crim pro finals today on Friday the 13th. In no way is the date a bad omen, I promise

NYT on how law enforcement is using NYC's public camera system to try to find the Brian Thompson killer. www.nytimes.com/2024/12/07/n...

Officially made it the whole semester teaching CrimPro and CrimLaw, one in the AM one in the PM, in mirror-image rooms, and didn't mess up the time or room once. Very proud of myself.

I have a criminal procedure joke but my lawyer told me to invoke my right to silence.

Some presents were delivered for me over the Thanksgiving break, including this beauty! @jasoncantone.bsky.social

Yikes

The UNL Law-Psych program is looking for its next director! The position is for a tenured Associate or Full prof in the psych department, & the ad only asks for a CV. As an alum & associated faculty, this program is dear to me & I'm excited for its next director! employment.unl.edu/postings/94405

My paper, Rethinking the Automobile Exception, forthcoming in the University of Cincinnati Law Review, is now up on SSRN! It attacks the rationales of the auto exception to 4A with empircal data & views from advances in tech. I would love feedback! papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Extremely displeased to report the task that I've been putting off for weeks took approximately 10 minutes with little interpersonal interaction.

In light of the new Bluesky rush, I thought this would be a great time to plug UNL's new Journal on Advancing Justice, a peer reviewed journal spearheaded by the excellent Danielle Jefferis and accepting submissions through 11/17! Check out njaj.unl.edu for more info

@maybell.bsky.social could I be added to the CrimProf starter pack? Thank you!

The amazing @jasoncantone.bsky.social was UNL's law-psych alumni award winner! His address discussed preparing for a career in non-academic fields. Big thanks and congrats to Jason!!

So proud to be part of this amazing program! news.unl.edu/article/law-...

So excited that my article, Kids These Days: Social Media, Evolving Expectations of Privacy, and Implications for the 4th Amendment, is out with the Illinois Law Review! The article presents empirical data on changes in privacy expectations. Check it out: illinoislawreview.org/print/vol-20...

10 years ago, I attended my own graduation from Nebraska Law. Tonight I had the honor of attending another Nebraska Law ceremony - this time as faculty. So lucky to be here #gobiggrad
