As Keir Starmer weighs up UK-US trade vs UK-EU integration, he faces three key facts (a 🧵): (i) only about 25% of UK losses from being outside the EU customs union & single market can be replaced by even the best imaginable US trade deal (& that won’t happen) /1.

Landmines don’t end when wars do. They wait in silence. 🇺🇦💔 They kill farmers, children, parents—years after the fighting stops. No excuse. They should never be used. 🚧🚨 #StandWithUkraine #HumanRights

In the year ending June 2024, UK police recorded 69,184 rapes. (It’s likely this represents c. 1 in 6 of the rapes actually committed.) In 2023/24 there were 2,283 prosecutions for rape, and 1,220 convictions. And c. 11,900 rape cases are currently waiting to go to court, many for more than 2 years.

The EU is about to weaken wolf protection, despite a lack of scientific evidence. Right now, it’s the wolf, but what’s next? The EU has long led the world in environmental protection. Today, this legacy is under threat from political forces. We can't let this happen! #HandsOffNature

The privatisation of Britain’s water infrastructure has been a complete disaster. We need to bring water into public ownership to end the shameful cycle of rip-off bills for customers, pollution in our waterways and obscene shareholder profiteering.

Ship collisions and noise are pushing whales to the brink–but there’s a simple solution. Slowing down ships could save thousands of whales and other marine life. Urge your leaders to commit to real ocean protection at the upcoming global summit! action.wemove.eu/sign/2024-6-...

'Starmer confirmed that diluting digital regulation was on the table in [US] trade talks.' Starmer had better understand that such capitulation to Trump is unacceptable to the UK electorate.

⚠️ We call on conservative leaders to stop their dramatic roll back of climate action and stand by the environmental and climate agreements that were made to protect communities across Europe. More from co-chairs @vulatsetsi.bsky.social & @ciarancuffe.bsky.social europeangreens.eu/news/climate...

I don’t see how centre/lib/left people can fix the problem that much of the current right has radicalised itself to the point of believing complete fictions. It’s hard to debate with people who don’t share fundamental moral values; impossible to debate with people who don’t accept a common reality.

No, your artificial lawn is not a "life hack". It's another tiny nail in the planet's coffin.

Water companies’ 💩 pollution incidents in England increased by 30% in 2024 - Sector had been set a target to reduce spillages by 40% and needs ‘radical reform’, campaigners say #sewagescandal www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Last month we kicked off a new program of policy work focused on climate justice 🌱 The transition to net zero couldn’t be more important but it will only happen if low and middle income households feel the material benefits. Read about the transition: www.jrf.org.uk/climate-change.

This is bloody awful from Toby Carvery, who have deliberately felled a 500 year old oak in Enfield. It goes together with the wider redevelopment of a very ecologically sensitive area to make a football ground for Tottenham. Again, these are not the right priorities folks.

Every April and May, peat extraction for #horticulture & #gardening devastates bog ecosystems and releases CO2. The longer governments in the UK delay legislation, the more #peat is dug up. It's that simple. Contact your MP about the bill to end peat sales: peatfreepartnership.org.uk/get-involved/

This is excellent. Get there if you can.

6 months ago Matilda was hit by a truck in Thailand. Her life was shattered and as good as over. Her story of recover will put a huge smile on your face. This is her today getting some incredible news… (1/10) 🧵

This is what’s happening with 1.3C of global heating above preindustrial levels. We’re on track for 3C by 2100. Failure to leave fossil fuels in the ground is a devastating crime against humanity & against all other life on this, our one fragile earth

🚨 The 2024 European State of the Climate (ESOTC) was released today. There are absolutely beautiful data visualizations throughout this report, but they also reveal some very alarming statistics of climate trends and extremes. Check it out: doi.org/10.24381/14j... #ESOTC2024 🧪⚒️🌊

Blocking MPs from voting on a US trade deal would be straight out of Trump's anti-democratic playbook. Labour MPs should make clear to the PM they won't let him sell out our NHS, undercut farmers or weaken protection for children online. He must give Parliament a vote.

Oh, it was *Zelensky* that started the war? Like when a bully claims their victim started the fight because their face hurt his fist?

surely the only reason for this is that Trump has asked him to refuse. And surely the only reason for Trump to do so is that he actively wants to defy the court. Given that the US have acknowledged this man should never have been sent to El Salvador and had done nothing wrong.

🚨 Ex-cab minister Louise Haigh calls for action on the use of NDAs to silence victims of workplace abuse: “The govt says it’s open to options. My question is: what more evidence do we need?” “We have a chance now to lead, to bring an end to legalised abuse in the workplace” In @politics.co.uk👇

A private equity firm just bought £1.6 BILLION worth of the NHS. It will make bigger profits by hiking rents for hospitals and NHS facilities. Previous govts privatized the estate. That means less money for frontline healthcare. NHS already drained by PFI and private contractors.

Given how we continue to fail to protect the planet we live on from our own, ignorance, carelessness and greed, the concept of "space tourism" is, in itself, obscene. And touting this as a "breakthrough for gender equality" is nauseating. I'd have hoped women would know better, but here we are.

🚨 This is why we need you to email your MP and ask them to attend the debate on our trading relationship with the EU, secured by Andrew Lewin MP. Only constituents acting in numbers can make their MP attend and only MPs acting in numbers can make the government listen. ~AA 👇 hey-mp.uk?c=debate

🚨 £4.8bn in disability social security cuts — AND the govt ruled out input on the most damaging policies. They're breaking their own rules by shutting out people with disabilities from decisions that will directly affect their lives. An absolute sham. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/poli...

There's been plenty of hyperventilating in some UK media outlets about solar farm taking over 'productive farm land' and endangering food security But in fact the ambitious 2030 targets will cover only 0.4% of land, compared with golf courses covering 0.5% www.thetimes.com/uk/environme...

Margaret Thatcher quit as an MP 33 years ago today. Her cruel decisions have echoed through the decades, creating some of the most serious problems the UK faces in 2025. 5 examples:

It's a straightforward relationship: high #inequality leads to the triumph of the far right. It will keep winning until governments deliberately seek to make societies more equal. I'm looking at you, Keir Starmer. This week's column. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

You couldn't make it up Richard Tice owns the British Steel site which has been nationalised. We are now paying rent straight to Tice. Reform, "Nationalise Steel so we can put the rents as high as we like."

Much of England & Wales had the driest March for over 60 years, with less than 1mm being recorded for the entire month. April is now predicted to have little significant rainfall. It's the main planting season for crops... we need to start talking seriously about #FoodSecurity & reducing #FoodWaste.
