Footballing mistress beckons tonight. (Brentford vs Everton at the GTech)

If sustained this should work wonders for S. Korea's current demographic challenges.

Donald Trump’s assault on aid sparks chaos in east Africa’s relief hub https://www.ft.com/content/4fd49b57-d3b8-4beb-8cc8-d27d463beabe

It took a while but delighted to be sharing news of the publication of this Special Issue. Guest editors were the late Ruut Veenhoven and Sergiu Baltatescu. You may also spot a book review I did for Carol Graham' book on 'Hope'.

The pitch looks perfect today. #Emirates

Hope this has legs.

This comedian is no clown!

For what it's worth, I'm a Villa fan tonight.

Well worth a read. I remember looking at this area of research 30+ years ago and the startling fact was that rates of return, both private & public, due from education (at primary, secondary & tertiary) were all significantly higher than almost all the forms of investment in almost all regions.

It is generally OK to change one's mind when new information comes to light. Reeves needs to think in the same way and ditch her pledge not to raise taxes.

A fascinating dashboard on well-being compiled by the ONS; and some of the information raises more questions than offering answers.

Dani Rodrik demonstrating yet again that he remains firmly well ahead of the curve on a range of issues. Well worth a listen if you're keen to better understand Trump's tariffs and their relationship to industrial policy.

On 27 August '22 when Brentford and Arsenal were playing at their respective homes, and with a 2.5 hour gap in the starting time, I managed to see both games live. As I recall I only missed about 5 minutes of each match. The motorbike helped a lot.

Off to the Emirates.

The sad news of Marianne Faithful's passing reminded me of this 20+ year old piece in the Guardian about one of my LSE professors, Professor Steve Nickell, who in his younger years competed with Mick Jagger for her affections.

'Animal spirits' as used by Keynes (1936) was always synonymous with actions and behaviours (by investors) that were driven by investor instinct and their 6th sense towards opportunities. Context: mainly used to explain why the investment function is generally interest-inelastic.

Emirates bound.

A first rate political biography of a failed PM, a semi biographical novel, crucial reflections on the role of hope in wellbeing support, and a wonderfully constructed game-theoretic discussion of how to be happy. All 4 authors are great story tellers. All 4 books enjoyed thoroughly in 2024.

I started my career in New Orleans (@ Tulane University), and visited the French Quarter often. In the 80s the worse you'd worry about was pickpockets, the occasional out of tune trumpet blaring away from a side cafe, or slightly overcooked crayfish. Let sanity return. #NewOrleans

In Iranian folklore tonight is Yalda night. Families would gather in a circle around an indoor stove, covered with a massive duvet (H&S look away), and see out the longest night with heroic stories of good vs. bad whilst munching on nuts, pomegranates and other goodies until daybreak. #YaldaNight

Measured and sensible advice.

The larger than life account of recent American political life.

The acceptance and preprint info I received for this paper issued in April 2022. Volume, Number and page details released last week! www.emerald.com/insight/cont...

Return home from the GTech did not go to plan last night. A cherished hat lost to the tracks.
