3 Point 2 Billion With a B. £3,200,000,000.00

The anti DEI bait & switch applied to the LGBTQ community: "“They’re not coming out and saying, ‘We want to fire the queers,’” Michael says. “They’re not asking people, ‘Are you gay? Are you lesbian?’ They’re asking, ‘Who is participating in DEI?’ But in the end it’s going to have the same effect.”"

The AMS is temporarily opening its career services to all who need them, regardless of membership status, and offering dues waivers and meeting registration fee reductions for those impacted by job loss due to changes in the government. Read more: bit.ly/4gRiHAk

Just listened to an episode of @ohgodwhatnow.bsky.social - the politics podcast - for the first time. It's such a relief to listen too serious analysis of the US political situation that isn't sane-washing Trump and his cronies. Worth a listen.

thanks to @solalpirelli.bsky.social for this nice piece on pseudoscience published by IEEE - and the need for the publisher to step up to the plate and start retracting this garbage if they want to retain any credibility. deevybee.blogspot.com/2025/02/ieee...

He nails it.

“Was it because of his skin color? Or his skill? We’ll never know…” Trump fires Black joint chiefs chair Hegseth accused of “DEI woke shit” I know BlueSky is supposed to be all nice and positive, etc, but more people should be reading about stuff like this… www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Something people in UK need to wake up to is how racism affects whether or not you get a job, whether you will be promoted and how long you will stay promoted.

If my French / Google translate is accurate, this is a surprisingly strong statement from the French Academy of Sciences about the current threats to US Science. And I'm glad to see it. Any other national academies speaking up? Or other major bodies?

Great article on th risks inherent in US Scientific Institutions staying quiet in the face of Trump's assaults on EDI. Please read. 👇

The Royal Society has a code of conduct: royalsociety.org/-/media/abou... . This piece is not about whether Musk violated the code: it is whether, if he did, it is useful to politics of science to sanction by the code. There is nothing more political than different rules for some people.

Signature tally now closing in on 3000. Please keep discussing, sharing and signing to put as much pressure on the Royal Society to respond as possible. forms.gle/AuYvuWqytx8K...

In the face of profound attacks on academic freedom from the right in the US which threaten to spill over into the rest of the world, will an act originally conceived by the Tories to ensure right wing voices were heard on campus work to protect the voices of diverse students and academics?

Tally just ticked past 1900 signatures. Please keep spreading the word about the letter & asking people to sign. It's important to make the Royal Society aware (at their meeting on 03 March) just how much the scientific community wants them to speak up for their values. forms.gle/SfsDemyS8QhP...

I was pleased to talk to @timeshighered.bsky.social about the impact of Trump's EDI crackdown on UK science. Glad to see that they used a good chunk of what I said, but I also had a strong message for @ukri.org and other UK funders 1/2

Worth reading this article about what's happening to US science. It somehow hadn't occurred to me that even things like "women in Engineering" groups would get cancelled, but apparently even letting women support one another is "too woke". ☹️

Life, weather and injuries have been getting in the way of mountain bike fun lately, but I got out for a day at the weekend, tried a new trail and worked on a new jump. Have a look 👇 youtu.be/DjCwDHCT2Rk?...

Search function has failed on outlook for Web! I am lost! Works on my mobile phone, but have tried two laptops and two browsers with no joy. Can anyone help???

Walking in to NASA’s JPL today as a woman in science leadership felt almost like a protest. They can take us off the webpages and the walls, but we will still be here, absolutely crushing it, and supporting our community while we do it. Happy International Day of Women in Science, everyone.

Signature tally is now north of 750. Please keep going so the community can send the strongest possible message to the Royal Society.

It was a great pleasure to meet Sheffield Central MP Abtisam Mohamed at Monday's All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) meeting on Semiconductors in Westminster. It is an exciting time in semiconductor research and we continue to be closely involved in the UK National Semiconductor Strategy.

🧪 Frustrated by the actions (or inactions) of some of our professional and learned societies during this ongoing attack on #science and scholarship more generally? If so, this letter to the @royalsociety.org from my mate, @scurry.bsky.social, is worth a read and I hope, signing ✍🏻

I've been watching aghast as many US scientific socities roll back from their commitment to equity in STEM. It's time for the rest of the world to step up and keep the vision of a fairer scientific community alive. This letter is asking @royalsociety.org to do just that. Please sign.

An open letter to the President of the @royalsociety.org – time to stand up for your values. occamstypewriter.org/scurry/2025/...

On International Day of Women & Girls in Science, it's apparently more important for NASA to erase women from their website than to progress US space exploration. We had so far to go & now the US is going backwards by the second. Do everything you can to keep forward momentum elsewhere in the world.

Dear Microsoft Outlook, If I type "B)" in a phrase such as "(processed by FIB)", I really, really do not want you to change those characters into a 😎.

This is very disappointing news. US professional orga have huge global reach and have in some cases been at the forefront of creating a fairer STEM profession. I hope that IEEE and @spie.org among others have the courage of their convictions to stick with their EDI work. The world is watching.
