Many of us know extremely talented people working at nIH who will be fired. As they note in the article “They are firing some of our best people, not our worst”🦠🧪 #ScienceNotSilence

On a positive note, I just got two vaccines today! A new one and a booster. Keeping my vaccine schedule up to date.

ATTENTION The Washington Post is collecting data about funding issues. Please consider contributing. thewashingtonpost.formstack.com/forms/scient...

Every measles death is a preventable tragedy I’m terrified for kids in America- they are paying the price for their foolish, stupid, antiscience leaders www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Word of the Day is ‘ingordigiousness’ (18th century): extreme greed at the expense of principles.

I’m angry. What a show this is.

Despite court order, NIH grants remain frozen. Newly awarded grants, grants with fundable scores, & funds for a new budget cycle of a current project are all *FROZEN*🥶 and not being released. US research is being choked to death & is on life support right now www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Now my email access is restored I guess I have to deal with the 200 emails in my inbox!

USAID doesn't work without workers! At least 1,600 staff were fired, further gutting one of the most crucial agencies for global health funding: apnews.com/article/usai... Join us at 3ET/12PT for a group "call your reps" session to say NO to these cuts! calendar.app.google/Y8tsoGzq5jps... #TBSky

Today I have no access to my email, calendar, or contact list. So if you are trying to get hold of me at work, good luck! I am viewing it as a digital detox.

wonder if my work is trying to tell me to chill out at home - outlook just deleted itself off my phone and OWA says I do not have a mailbox. No evening work for me. LOL

Historian Barbara Tuchman, on what she called "wooden-headedness":

Read the post and then read the book "The Black Angels" by @mariasmilios.bsky.social - I highly recommend it. #TBFighters #WomenInStem 🦠🧪

at least the information is getting out there, but there will be damage to medical research in the US. I am supposed to be on study section in a couple of weeks and am left wondering if I should still submit my reviews if the meeting cannot go ahead. 🧪🦠

Okay some fresh morning brain thoughts on the @asm.org statement: #MicroSky 1. @blackinmicro.bsky.social did SO MUCH to lead this push for ASM to reaffirm their support for diversity and inclusivity in the profession. Please consider donating to this organization: blackinmicrobiology.org/donate/ 🧵

Destroying science, medical research, and universities is already well underway. We have heard from four different scientists in the last few days that they are actively calling colleagues abroad, asking about jobs.

Not feeling so hot about celebrating Presidents' Day today? Same. Luckily, today is also National Random Acts of Kindness Day - that's something we all need more of. If you do something kind today or have a great idea of a RAK to share, bring us some joy by dropping it in the comments below!

If you want your country to quickly control outbreaks and also prevent them, maybe you don't want to fire your best disease detectives?

You know Kate Winslet in Contagion? Where she runs into a hot zone, risking her life, so Americans could be safer? She was an EIS officer. That’s who was just fired at CDC today. EIS officers. And many, many more public servants fighting every day for your health.

Epidemic intelligence service officers are the cream of the cream. They're top doctors, veterinarians & other health professionals. They sign up for a two-year training program to serve the country. Not only is terminating them bad for the country, it's also a disgraceful violation of a commitment.

Roses are red, Violets are blue. I still get my seasonal covid and flu vaccines, and I think you should too. #healthpolicyvalentines

I'm very glad to see that Science instituted this updated news feed. But the news it delivers is terrible, infuriating stuff, because that's what we've got to work with. Today thousands of probationary employees and NIH and other agencies are being fired, for example. This is a crime.

What the health & scientific world "have experienced in the past few weeks is like a death in the family. We are angry, shocked, & saddened, but we must not despair". This a telling account of what is happening in the #US, but I am saddened that the author felt it had to be written anonymously.

This is not going to end well And RFK will promote more of this nonsense across the country www.cnn.com/2025/02/13/h...

Science is being decimated 🦠🧪 "The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is losing nearly 1,300 workers, or one-third of its staff, the Associated Press reported."

Ending the week enthused by my group, but frustrated with faculty. Twice in a week, I've replied to a faculty email with comments and later another faculty replies separately with the same comments. On the positive, I have learned a new word - "hepeating" #WomenInStem

With its anti-science and anti-public health policies, the US is now at risk for outbreaks of tuberculosis As @johngreensbluesky.bsky.social put it, "TB is both a form and expression of injustice" www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

So much happening here right now, hard both to keep up and to keep spirits up. I've been enjoying hearing science from the group today which is helping a lot. We even submitted a paper this week.

Biopharma companies and CEOs are keeping their heads down at their own peril. They should speak up about what’s happening to the NIH and other science agencies before it’s too late. Silence gives consent. And no one should consent to this.

"what kind of institution do we want to be" is a thing that I sometimes wish academic leaders would spend more time on both privately and publicly

This is outstanding. All academic scientists should be required to watch this.

What?

Not really feeling celebratory this year, but it is "International Day of Women and Girls in Science" #WomenInStem 🧪🦠

US foreign aid is frozen so people aren't getting crucial medication! Keep up the fight against these actions by contacting Congress. If you're in DC or one of the 22 states in the lawsuit, also contact your Attorney General. For instructions, go to: tbfighter.link/contact-congress

Yep, these are big holes in the funding to keep labs and research going. Indirects are higher in the non-educational institutes because our buildings only exist for research purposes. Expect to see big increases in direct costs for new grants, but that won't fix the immediate gap.

And what possible explanation does @hhmi.bsky.social have to offer for this move?

This is what amounts to an ILLEGAL & indiscriminate funding cut for research centers everywhere. It will mean shuttering labs across the country, layoffs in red & blue states, and derailing lifesaving research on everything from cancer to opioid addiction. We all need to speak out to save lives.

I just don't even know where we go from here - this applies to existing grants 🧪

There's a reason much of this work falls under the heading "Global Health" - big clue in the title. www.science.org/content/arti...
