When leaders normalize calling others ‘enemies,’ we should all be alarmed. When rhetoric turns into action, as we’ve already seen with attacks on higher education, we can’t ignore it. #HigherEd #HigherEducation 1/3

When the word ‘enemies’ is spoken by those in power, how can we ignore it? I feel the actions taken against American higher education these last few weeks prove that this was not just empty rhetoric in 2021. #SoundArt #SoundInstallation #ArtAsActivism 1/4

‘Enemies’—a word from the US oath of office—now tossed around so easily. What does that say about our leaders? What does it say about us as a country? #SoundArt #SoundInstallation #OathOfOffice 1/3

I don't usually make political art. But with each passing day, it feels less like usual times. Not when we have leaders who use of the term "enemies" so casually. What does it mean when our leaders use that word? #SoundArt #SoundInstallation #PoliticalArt 1/4

My YouTube video about the Zoom H4essential audio recorder recently passed 6000 views in 4 months. Easy to see it is having an impact beyond my #StetsonU students. Guess I should make more of these? #FieldRecording #GearTalk #GettingStarted www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0Cq...

Author copies for my book 'Sonic Pasts: acoustical heritage and historical soundscapes' have now arrived. Right on time for Christmas 😊 The book is now available for sale for anyone interested 🎁 www.routledge.com/Sonic-Pasts-...

On Dec 12, NPS rangers and other environmental educators gathered together at Canaveral National Seashore for our very first Listen & Learn event. Our goal: equip them with vocabulary, activities, & other knowledge so that they could make #soundscape more prominent in their work with the public. 1/2

To close out my exploratory workshop on sound, I asked the MFA students to write short sound scores in the style of the Italian Futurists. This was meant as an exercise to practice using the vocabulary I introduced for describing sound. #PerformanceArt #SoundArt 1/4

So what are the odds that on a day I planned to cover The Art of Noises with students that a new manifesto by a guy named Luigi would drop? The 6 students in my workshop seriously thought I was kidding around. www.italianfuturism.org/manifestos/t...

🙋‍♂️Me. I’ve messed these up. Took a big chunk out of the wall in my campus office when I removed one. To be fair, the building was built in 1902, so it may have more to do with the age of the walls. But “damage free” it was not.

Excited to be at Atlantic Center for the Arts! For the next few days, I’ll be leading exploratory workshops in sound for Stetson's MFA program. Finished setting up my room like a good teacher. I brought along some friends to help explore my topic: “Let’s talk about sound”. Spot anyone you know?

I was just telling somebody about visiting this in 2012!

Took Jesse Budel (sound artist, visiting from Australia) out for some late afternoon #listening at Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge. We were treated to an amazing #sunset at end of our hike!

This resource has been an essential part of my teaching beginners for several years now. Students read the section on recording problems, then I make them purposely recreate those problems. Teaches them what to avoid! 🗣️🎙️ Highly recommended. Thank you @robbyers1.bsky.social!

Just followed a bunch of outdoor learning / outdoor education folks. Hoping for some cross pollination with my usual audio / sound folks, because I’ve slowly realized that’s essentially what #YngSoundSeekers has been doing.

My 20-minute presentation from the #InTheField2 conference in London is now online. It focuses on how Young Sound Seekers built an inclusive curriculum grounded in universal design, informed by insights from visually impaired professionals. 1/2 🎥 Watch here on Vimeo: vimeo.com/showcase/113...

I haven’t been keeping up with BlueSky as much as some other platforms. But there seems to be a fresh wave of sound & audio people finding me here. Hopefully it’s a sign of re-building that community. Thanks for following!

Super excited to share that I will be presenting this July in London for an international symposium on contemporary #FieldRecording. I'll be talking about #YoungSoundSeekers and how we work to make field recording more accessible. Just as exciting will be hearing from others about their projects.

Releasing a new sound pack on Freesound.org! Created in collaboration with my Stetson students, it features Canaveral National Seashore’s waves, underwater soundscapes, & footsteps. Perfect for your media projects! #FieldRecording #Canaveral #hydrophone #ambience freesound.org/people/natha...

The Stetson group out on our first hike this morning. From left to right: Nurdaulet, Lane, Naya, Cristal, me.

Packing for a #FieldRecording trip when you are bringing students adds a whole new level of complexity. But I am really looking forward to leading a small group in Great Smoky Mountains NP next week!

Lots of me talking in this video, but most of the credit goes to Professor Chen for building up this part of the Digital Arts program. #GameDesign www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhrV...

Good news for Stetson. For the third year in a row, we are one of the top 50 undergraduate Game Design programs! #GoHatters! #DigitalArts www2.stetson.edu/today/2024/0...

My students and I sent out to Canaveral last week to visit with artist-in-residence Perri Howard. We ended up making an appearance in this write up for the Orlando Sentinel. (Sorry about the paywall!) www.orlandosentinel.com/2024/03/01/p...

Today at Canaveral, we had a close encounter with a dolphin aggressively chasing a fish in Mosquito Lagoon & captured these sounds on the hydrophones. nathanwolek.com/audio/2024/0... #bioacoustics #FieldRecording

I’d like to know this too.

How does a low-cost recording device perform in extreme weather? Find out by watching my presentation for the 2023 Online #AudioMoth Conference. I tell the story of how we captured the sound of #HurricaneIan with #YoungSoundSeekers using #HydroMoth recorders. youtu.be/WEcvDmvx6Ts

For those that brave the crowds at Blue Spring State Park this Saturday, my #FieldRecording students will be running a hydrophone listening station on the river dock. You might hear a #manatee. More details here - www.instagram.com/p/C2kYBhHLPIa/
