I’ve followed Roy Edroso since his VV days. Now I read his Substack (I know, but dammit), Roy Edroso Breaks it Down, each weekday morning over my coffee. But not next week, when he’s having some apparently major surgery. If you can send good wishes, maybe do so? open.substack.com/pub/edroso/p...

...but just may be willing to give them up in order to hurt the descendants of their ancestors’ slaves

I'm broken hearted to see the ruling for Tennessee. Dismantling access to healthcare for trans kids is unforgivable. The government has no place setting these kinds of policies. These treatments and medications are safe and tested. Gender enforcement kills people. Medicine shouldn't be ideology.

The Bruenigs and their ilk are truly disgusting, and no decent person could comprehend what Valenti quotes below without feeling that disgust. The trouble we are in stems from so many who suppress any decency they possess, in order refuse to comprehend the actual meaning of statements like this.

christ if I were Walz I wouldn’t *take* a call from that asshole

After yesterday, any half-rational MAGAt would realize that the only path to consolidating their hold on power is outright fascist repression. They can no longer delude themselves that their policies and actions are popular. Expect violence, official and otherwise, to accelerate.

Reminder that buying your books from @bookshop-org-uk.bsky.social will: - help out indie bookshops 👍 - protect a diverse bookselling (and therefore publishing) environment 👍 - give Amazon a teeny-tiny up yours🖕 Plus you'll always get a discount from the cover price! 🫰 uk.bookshop.org/p/books/the-...

My policy: repost any Dorothy Parker post I see.

Shut the Senate down, Democrats. Object to every unanimous consent. Throw your bodies in the way. No fucking post office names, no fucking bullshit bills, nothing until Republicans condemn what happened to Padilla and move to hold Noem accountable.

My god this man is 5 years younger than me

I did not expect to find myself applauding Gavin Newsom just now, but these are strange times.

No, it is not. Opposition, including very clear, uncompromising opposition, does not require either hatred or vitriol, let alone violence. Nor is there any law of political resistance that says: when in doubt, just play into your opponent's hands. NOTE: This is in response to this post, not LA.

If it has to be rainy for months of weekends in a row, I guess it’s a little better that the temperatures are solidly summery, the wind is still, and the rain is light. I’m not going to go out and sit on one of those chairs, but it’s pleasant to be out in briefly. (shot a couple hours ago)

“Ultimately the gleichschaltung is unfortunately of a lot more relevance here than the schadenfreude.” www.lawyersgunsmoneyblog.com/2025/06/what...

Yes. Almost all the online yelling at Dems for not being...whatever...is a lot more about defining the yeller’s brand than it is about actually making any positive difference.

WIP(?) or maybe best left alone

Yeah. If there’s a way to scam money out of people, you can be absolutely certain that there will be scammers doing just that. It’s a variation of the paradox of toleration. Do you tolerate NAZI speech? Do you tolerate (i.e. send money to) scammers to support the non-scammers? (I don’t know.)

Still exploring in search of a new “style.” I don’t like that word but can’t think what the right one would be. Sort of ugly but it feels *real* to me, more than other recent stuff. See alt text please.

OK with prominent “conservatives” calling for Trump to defy the courts including the supremos, we’re coming down to the crunch here. If the US constitution is void, the US is void.

With basic American freedoms and democracy itself in dire peril, courageous and principled leadership is desperately needed. Anyone urging Democratic leaders to blow with the fickle winds of polling is working for the other side.

I note that getting into a legal argument with Kathryn Tewson (and basic civics) is probably not going to pan out well for you.

Francis Colburn taught art at the UVM, before my time there. His paintings were influenced by the surrealists and the cubists, but he found his own slightly bizarre path. He also recorded albums of jokes and (horribly misogynist) ribald stories, told in an exaggerated old Vermont accent.

Just want to remind everyone that no one would vote for a bill as spectacularly unpopular as the monstrosity the House just passed, if they thought mere voters would be able to remove them from power. They’re operating on the assumption that elections will not be honestly held.
