The good news: more people than ever are enjoying parks. The National Park Service reported a record-setting 331,863,358 (!) visits in 2024. The bad news: This robust visitation is at extreme odds with the ongoing dismantling of the National Park Service.

“There is never a time that our parks should be politicized. And a threat to one park is a threat to all of them.” - NPCA's Crystal Davis, who our oversees advocacy at national park sites near Chicago, like Indiana Dunes and Pullman National Historical Park

“We can invest billions of dollars at the state and federal level, but without the Park Service and the Army Corps, Everglades restoration is just a dream, not a reality," -NPCA's Cara Capp on how leasing and staffing cuts will impact the Everglades

In an analysis of National Park Service web content, NPCA found the federal government has deleted and scrubbed content related to LGBTQ+ history. NPCA condemns these changes and calls on @Interior to restore the materials for the public without delay. www.npca.org/articles/714...

"Will the Trump administration favor an unauthorized foreign mine or will they better support the institution that protects America’s treasured landscapes?” -NPCA's Chance Wilcox on the Colosseum Mine construction in Mojave National Preserve

"Many of the staff who were let go, these are people who you know. They still talk about it as their dream job. You know whether you're a park ranger or you're a scientist, many of them were early in their careers." -NPCA's Ed Stierli

"What I’ve been hearing is that, regardless of the intention, to make government smaller or to streamline positions — whatever the intention is, the impact does not match," -NPCA's Crystal Davis to @adrianaperez.bsky.social www.chicagotribune.com/2025/03/01/n...

"Quite simply and astonishingly, this is dismantling the National Park Service as we know it, ranger by ranger and brick by brick." - Theresa Pierno, NPCA's President and CEO

In the latest move the undercutting the Park Service, the Trump administration plans to terminate NPS leases and shutter 34 offices across the country. These leases include visitor centers, law enforcement offices, museums, and hubs for critical services. www.npca.org/articles/707...

In the face of mass terminations, national parks and park staff are hurting. Here are three things you can do right now to join us in standing with them. 🏞️

The Antiquities Act of 1916 gives the president the power to protect important lands and waters by designating them as national monuments. About a quarter of our national park sites were born through the Antiquities Act. #CrashCourse www.npca.org/resources/37...

"With hundreds of park staff taking the administration’s buyout offer, the Park Service will lose a wealth of expertise, experience and knowledge they will never get back. These actions will set the National Park Service back years," -NPCA's Kristen Brengel

Where there are fossils, there are often fossil fuels. The new admin's push for drilling and mining on public lands—including national monuments—could threaten the original Jurassic Park: Dinosaur National Monument. More on #TheSecretLivesOfParks

If the cuts aren't restored, "this just isn't going to be the same Park Service ... All of these places are so beautiful and have been so well-protected for so long; continuing to chip away at the staff is illogical," -NPCA's Kristen Brengel to @LATimes.com

“Our parks shouldn’t be politicized. They bring joy to every race and socioeconomic background," -NPCA's Crystal Davis www.record-eagle.com/news/local_n...

Reflecting on a long-understaffed National Park Service, NPCA's Kristen Brengel told @CNN.com that when it comes to recent job cuts at the agency, “There was no fat to trim. All the staff who were there were needed.”

NPCA, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and @protectnps.bsky.social have filed a pivotal legal challenge to protect Wilderness Battlefield from intense industrial development, including data centers. The site must be protected as a place of solemn reflection, not colossal construction.

Thinking about a potentially risky national park adventure this year? It's probably not the best time: Of the 1,000+ positions cut from the Park Service “we don’t know exactly how many search-and-rescue personnel were laid off," -NPCA's Kristen Brengel to @nytimes.com

Speaking to @nytimes.com about the impact of new Park Service job cuts on visitor experiences, NPCA's Kristen Brengel said: “If you’ve planned a bucket list trip to a national park, you have to take into consideration that you won’t have the full experience."

"Stonewall, including all of us in the LGBT community who fought back that historic night, cannot and will not be erased. You cannot erase the history of Stonewall by erasing a letter." -Mark Segal, LGBTQ Activist, NPCA Ambassador for Change

"A Park Service staff person may be hired to do interpretation but because high visitation they're managing traffic and cleaning bathrooms... We can't stand for this anymore. We need these jobs restored." -NPCA's Kristen Brengel on @WBUR

“These were indiscriminate decisions that were made on staffing. Very thoughtless. Very reckless.” -NPCA's Kristen Brengel on @WBUR

“We could be putting several park units in very bad, sticky situations where they can't manage visitation. This termination just adds more pain to the understaffing.”

It's with intense gratitude we share stories from some of the 1,000+ National Park Service staff terminated via email on February 14. Their stories contain frustration, anger, evaporated dreams and concern for the future of our parks.

NPCA's Kristen Brengel shared what to expect on your next national park visit, especially at smaller parks, in the face of historic staffing cuts, from closed facilities to fewer rangers on the trail.

NPCA's Kristen Brengel to @usatoday.com: "We're losing dedicated professionals who've been doing a fabulous job, and that loss of expertise will hurt the Park Service over time...This termination just adds more pain to the understaffing."

What does the National Park Service look like with fewer staff? NPCA's Kristen Brengel told @apnews.com to expect: -Shorter visitor center hours -Delayed openings -Closed campgrounds "These actions are pushing an already overwhelmed Park Service to its breaking point."

We asked current NPCA staff who used to wear the green and gray about unforgettable memories working for the Park Service and what they want most for today's park staff. #StandWithGreenAndGray www.npca.org/articles/658...

More than 1,000 National Park staff have lost their jobs. This is not okay. Park staff work every single day to keep us safe, teach us and do important research to help parks thrive. Join NPCA in urging Congress to roll back these devastating job cuts. npca.org/1000jobs

"Erasing letters or webpages does not change the history or the contributions of our transgender community members at Stonewall or anywhere else. History was made here and civil rights were earned because of Stonewall." - NPCA’s Timothy Leonard www.npr.org/2025/02/14/g...

Don't be that guy https://www.npca.org/give/join

🚨A thousand National Park Service staff just lost their jobs today.🚨 While some parks can now move forward with seasonal hiring, slashing staff could have a ripple effect on operating hours, public safety and resource protection ahead of busy season. www.npca.org/articles/681...

More Valentines for the one who really needs to get away 💝

Today the National Park Service removed references to trans contributions at Stonewall National Monument. Erasing letters or webpages does not change the history or the contributions of our transgender community members at Stonewall or anywhere else. www.npca.org/articles/677...

The clock is ticking on the chance to reduce federal hiring freeze impacts on parks this busy season. “Without those people, there's going to be significant impacts on Yellowstone and on our communities. Now is the time when we're hiring seasonal staff..."

You've heard a lot about "executive orders" lately. But what are they exactly, and what do they mean for parks? NPCA's #CrashCourse series explains more about executive orders and other terms you should know as a park advocate: www.npca.org/resources/37...

For that special someone 💝

Thousands of job offers rescinded. Buyouts offered. And many park staff are left uncertain about the security of their jobs. Go to npca.org/jobcuts and tell Congress to stand up for park staff and to roll back these devastating job cuts.

NPCA's Jeff Hunter on how Trump's hiring freeze will impact national parks: “It's a perfect storm for problems. This is America’s shared natural and cultural heritage we’re talking about. You have to have staff there to protect these resources." www.usatoday.com/story/news/l...

“Everything's on the table till they take it off the table, and they didn't take anything off the table here,” -NPCA's Kristen Brengel on threats to national monuments under DOI Sec Burgum's order reviewing public lands for oil, gas and mining development. www.usatoday.com/story/travel...

Join NPCA in urging Secretary Burgum to take our national monuments off the table as he works towards President Trump’s goal of energy dominance. If we lose these places to oil and gas development, we can never get them back. npca.org/nodrilling

NPCA's Melissa Abdo on the federal hiring freeze affecting Florida national parks: "We know people want to go out to Biscayne National Park and snorkel and have a good experience. And it takes rangers, it takes seasonal park staff to be able to do that."
