On Bloor Street in Toronto, a recent count during rush hour showed over 50% of the traffic was bikes and other mobility devices that weren't cars. (Via @theoverheadwire.com) open.substack.com/pub/lloydalt...

If you’re an American should watch the Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown ep on Iran. A deeply humanizing look at a country full of people just like you and me. I watched it after Anthony died and it moved in ways that are hard to relay. I also immediately ran out to try kabob koobideh and tahdig.

lol what happened here

He just dropped $280,000,000 worth of artillery in a war that’s not ours, but our grandparents have to live on Ramen noodles because America can’t afford Meals on Wheels anymore. Make it make sense.

“Forget about intelligence” is a pretty good mantra for this administration

"Was it really this dumb in 2003" guys they renamed french fries

The spending limit for campaigns is roughly $8.3 million. Mamdani raised it with 20,720 donors + public funds. Lander, with 8,050 donors + public funds. Cuomo raised it with 5,730 donors + public funds. The super PAC raised that much much from one donor: Bloomberg. www.politico.com/news/2025/06...

"Then they sing 'Memories,' from the musical CATS! William McKinley rides by on a tariff and gives me a thumbs-up!"

There are 7,591 words in the U.S. Constitution. Not one is "bible", "Jesus", "Judeo", "Christian" or "God". Separation of church and state guarantees ALL Americans the right to practice ANY religion. Or none. Which part of "religious freedom" is not as clear as a church bell?

To carry 50,000 people per hour in each direction, a city needs a 175m wide road for cars. Even if those cars are electric. And then there’s all the parking. OR a city can move A LOT MORE people in a lot less space, with A LOT LESS public money and pollution. Via UITPnews

This is the first time I’ve ever seen a campaign set up a donation center. This is simply an incredible public service and a way to meet the people.

Glory!

The Faces of Gun Violence exhibit at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) headquarters showed the portraits of 120 people killed in gun violence in the U.S.

legit think that tiktok video coogler did on film formats sold millions worth of tickets

One thing that I was thought was revealing about the divisions within Canada: When Carney acknowledged Poilievre's hard work on his campaign in his victory speed, the crowd of Liberals cheered. When Poilievre mentioned Carney in his concession speech, there was loud booing.

Sinners dropping just 6% in its second weekend merits a much bigger headline than its $48 million opening. It is actual box-office news--news as in "This never happens." Just a giant thing, for Ryan Coogler and for the future of original material.

Sinners invites a new bold business idea. What if people want to see movies because they like them and not due to a pavlovian response to being 12 years old once!?

The oil industry buys off Congress. No action on climate. The NRA buys off Congress. No action on guns. Insurance companies buy off Congress. No action on health care. The list goes on and on. Money in politics is the root of our dysfunction.

"I couldn't help but wonder how Elon Musk thought promoting Neo-Nazis and white supremacy would be good for Tesla, a company that sold mostly to liberals. I mean, you go full-on fascist, and just like that, liberals no longer want to give you money. Was this just something else he could Nazi?"

Tomorrow, a certain online mega-retailer launches a book sale, just days before Indie Bookstore Day on 4/26. This is no coincidence; Bookstore Day is one of the largest revenue drivers for indies. Indies need our support to thrive & build community spaces for all...mega-retailers do not.

I wrote something about how we're seeing the rise of the online "alpha male." This is someone who speaks in clipped imperatives, squeezes into tight suits, and performs for our feed. They present a vision of masculinity shaped by politics, tech, and 100 years of cultural history 🧵

A tale of two movies: Similar deal structures. Similar budgets. One made $45M from 3300 screens, post pandemic, and won the weekend. The other made $41M from 3600 screens pre-pandemic, and placed second. And yet this is the coverage.

Angel of the Lord: He is not here, He is risen, just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead. Alito: Okay, first of all, this violates ALL sorts of rules Thomas: This was a LAWFUL execution, who is God to interfere

“As is evident, simply by looking at him, Dear Leader is in exquisite health, having the trim body of an athletic 23-year-old, the mind of an inquisitive genius, an the couth of the most refined men. Truly, the most perfect human walking among we lesser mortals. Praise God!” --The Court Physician

this thing is going to sell so much better than it would have, simply because it is so clearly the anti-Cybertruck

"The left went too far" in contemporary U.S. politics is almost always a lie and a very convenient way to rationalize moral failure. For example, "MeToo went too far" replaces "I do not care about sexual violence or its victims and I don't want to have to even feel bad about that"
