Something about journalism that is becoming more and more clear every day under Trump: This is the golden age of whistleblowers.

Repost with the first album you bought with your own money.

I know we have bigger problems at hand in our world. But whoever invented these kinds of faucets should just, you know, have the water in their shower stop without warning. Multiple times. Every day for the rest of their lives.

Make Students Dumb Again ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Geez, even my student editors would have shot this one down. So, NYT:

From 🤮 to 🤬 to 🤮 to 🤬 so damn fast in my head. We need a word (and an emoji) for when you are both disgusted and angry at the same time. In the meantime, I will go with “fuckin gross” and hope that suffices.

As usual, Masha Gessen gets it exactly right. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/15/o... Excerpts:

I miss the innocence of a Dan Quayle screw-up coming from the vice president’s office. #potatoe

One of the exercises I use in my data journalism class involves NC voter registration data where the data "shows" people aged 115 years+. My students are less credulous than the world's richest person.

Portuguese editorial cartoonist Zez Vaz reaches back to Tiananmen Square to call on American defiance.

We were told this was, like, the most dangerous app in the world and a national security threat like no other. And now everyone is like "eh, it's fine"

Got reminded today that in journalism ethics, the balance between “seek truth and report it” and “minimize harm” is tricky. I lean toward the former, others the latter. The best way to hit that balance is in “be accountable and transparent.” Justify your decision openly, not just in the newsroom.

This is from a 2020 presentation. Now it's just the chaos we live in, and no such description is needed.

You know what doesn’t die in darkness? Stenography.

Insisting other entities call it “Gulf of America” isn’t based on any real principled desire for it to be called that; rather, it’s a convenient shibboleth for an authoritarian government to quickly identify who will and who will not obey, even for relatively trivial matters.

We are living in the dumbest timeline.

Me over here with my antenna like 😐

How do I petition the Supreme Court to overturn something without being a megadonor? Asking for a country.

Sitting U.S. Vice President says Nazi aligning kid who worked for guy who did the Nazi salute, twice, at the U.S. Inauguration says give the kid a break but says shame on the reporter who exposed the Nazi beliefs of the kid. The VP, by definition, is being… a Nazi sympathizer.

Here is a very helpful Project 2025 tracker: docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

Remember the goal of the administration here is not to punish one radio station. It’s to instill fear in other journalists — stop journalism before it starts. I still have faith in the First Amendment, but we need journalists (and publishers) to be courageous in the face of this kind of threat.

One of the five freedoms in the First Amendment is the right of assembly… so when do we stop calling them rights?

America wtf are we doing

I may just lose my mind if I read one more MSM story where the legality/illegality of certain actions -- eg deporting US citizens to foreign prisons -- is just lazily waved around like it's some goddamned unanswerable question. www.wsj.com/world/americ...

This is the biggest crisis of our lifetimes.

I love you, Canada. You don't fuck around.

I repeat: a coup.

Elon Musk is perpetrating a digital and financial coup. This is not hyperbole. This is not euphemism. This is what has happened. 🧵

American citizens should not have to enter into a contract with a private company (that’s an X account signup!) to receive government communications

it is honestly kind of striking to me that the founders were basically on target re: “things that could end our republic”

Our neighborhood taco truck is gone. I blame Trump. I miss #tacotrucksoneverycorner

Assuming we make it through the next couple of decades, this will be an incredible image for future historians/students of the Trump era

Just a reminder that this exists, for better or for worse. www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuYl...

by freezing all federal grants, trump is fundamentally transforming the relationship between the executive and congress. he is asserting dictatorial authority over federal spending, transforming congress's lawmaking powers into advisory authority. it is a constitutional crisis

Start the database now, if you haven’t already. Win a Pulitzer.

I hope every Democrat in Congress understands there can be no deal, under any circumstances, that attaches conditions to disaster aid. Once you let them set that precedent, they’re going to use it to fuck with your state too.

Just some light reading ahead of #calexit.

I am super busy today. Please save all complaints for tomorrow thank you.

Incredibly glad we've joined Costco. Adding Target to the list of places that are on my "Schmiedt list." (Maybe I should start a series? #schmiedtlist could be a thing?)

Again, I share the sentiments of the paper in Montclair, N.J., 1945.

a screenshot of an instagram comment, repurposed as a graphic by the 33rd team, then reshared by an espn reporter, and then mirrored from twitter to bluesky by a bot. we need farm to table posts

Photo from this afternoon:

The Washington Post editorial this morning essentially equating Biden's questionable pardons with Trump's outrageous Jan. 6 pardons was unconscionable. The newspaper I've been part of for 48 years has utterly lost its soul.

Saw this fire growing a couple hours ago as I was going up the 14 near Santa Clarita. Could tell it was bad even then.
