Courage and honor come in many forms.

Having served as a Moscow correspondent in the early days of Putin's reign, this reminds me of how the Kremlin took over its own press pool and made sure that only compliant journalists were given access.

On 7 March, we've an online event for anyone thinking about applying to join the #History subject panel for REF2029. The event will bring together former panel members and potential panellists, to discuss the work of the History panel, and the experience of members bit.ly/3QeQlVI #skystorians

Thirty years ago (1995), Irving Kristol wrote that a 'neoconservative' was a liberal mugged by reality. Badenoch says he talked of a conservative being a liberal mugged by reality in 2005. She says she is 'not a neocon' in quoting the 'godfather of neoconservatism' as to why he was a neoconservative

And here’s another part of the story we aren’t hearing enough about from the press.

Most of the press are determined to fuel a far-right narrative of this election. It’s important to get the full - and rather different - story.

So close, but they could just have altered the title slightly to ‘Spectator writers won’t get the right-wing government they were jonesing for’

Young men are closer to the German national averages. Young women are not. That needs far more thought and explanation. (And it’s a great thing!)

NEH introduces new prohibited categories to comply with executive orders. This is an infringement of academic freedom plain and simple, and also nonsense: what is “discriminatory equity ideology”

No need for very sophisticated source criticism here.

Musk gets the ball rolling: - prevented children getting medicines - stopped veterans’ support - pushed Nazi propaganda - destabilised allies - diverted taxpayer money to my own companies List accomplishments or resign, Musk tells US federal workers www.bbc.com/news/article...

#Vikings on TV tend to have a dark wild-looking aesthetic but finds from 10th century #Sweden suggest male interests in colourful fashions, silk, shiny buttons, & fancy hats - all to show status, something also backed up in textual accounts #medievalsky #britishmuseum

I just cannot imagine this kind of thing ending well for the popularity of the Trump administration or of a certain head of DOGE

This is a poor headline from the BBC. The US aren't offering a "deal" - they want the minerals in return for support already given. It's straight up extortion.

"The humanities may be as necessary, or as dangerous, as any other set of disciplines. They do, however, offer at least a means and a store of evidence for diagnosing our present discontents." @kfullagar.bsky.social, Vice-President of the ‪@austhistassoc.bsky.social‬.

Trams for the West Riding .. Excellent news www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/news/traffic...

I visited the asylum hotel in my constituency so that I could listen to the issues affecting the men. I spoke with a number of men who are keen to work & contribute to society, but can't due to the ban on them working. 💼 This is why I'm supportive of the #LiftTheBan campaign.

Memorial conference today in Cambridge for my former partner Prof David N. Dumville who died in September - a very touching event.

What if I was to tell you that a deep recession was the plan all along?

As usual, Private Eye hits the bullseye.

Good for KS as well.

Very good, recommended: the British Tories' disastrous embrace of Trump shows that their whole moral and intellectual system is decomposing. alexmassie.substack.com/p/the-rottin...

University history lecturers spend much of the first year survey courses unravelling students' conviction that a source is useless because "it is bias (sic)". No, the bias or perspective is precisely what we're interested in.

I haven't seen any Anglophone obituaries of R.I. Moore yet, but here's one in French (demonstrating the respect his work had internationally).

A prescient and disturbing piece from the weeks before Trump’s inauguration on the ideas of right-wing ideologue Yarvin. Essential reading to understand what Musk and Vance think they are doing. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024...

One of the greats. May he rest in peace.

Agree -and the same things said in this thread could be applied to everything Rees Davies wrote.

Just the latest of a long line of right-wing governments who’ve pulled this one.
