I’m thrilled to announce that I will start as a presidential assistant professor in Neuroscience at the City U of Hong Kong in Jan 2026! I have RA, PhD, and postdoc positions available! Come work with me on neural network models + experiments on human memory! RT appreciated! (1/5)

Despite the world being on fire, I can't help but be thrilled to announce that I'll be starting as an Assistant Professor in the Cognitive Science Program at Dartmouth in Fall '26. I'll be recruiting grad students this upcoming cycle—get in touch if you're interested!

Excited to share a preprint from work with @rewaniw.bsky.social and Serra Favila, where we show that visual cortex responses during memory retrieval are spatially tuned to the locations of objects previously seen only once It's an early draft — feedback is welcome! See 🧵 for more #neuroskyence 1/7

I'm excited to share that the VOR for my latest manuscript with Lindsay Rondot, Zeb Kurth-Nelson, @mgarvert.bsky.social , Ray Dolan, @behrenstimb.bsky.social and Erie Boorman, is out in @elife.bsky.social ! Check it out here: elifesciences.org/articles/101... A short thread below 🧵 (1/5):

New opinion paper in @cp-trendsneuro.bsky.social with Dan Bendor, where we argue that rodent studies provide only marginal support for the idea that replay supports real-time decisions (e.g. planning). Fictive learning and memory tagging are more consistent w/evidence. www.cell.com/trends/neuro...

Very nice indeed from Schoenbaum lab www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Video of a talk Mark Seidenberg & I gave to teachers+ at Planet Word Museum @planetworddc.bsky.social. We urged ⬆️ focus on child learning and sentence comprehension in reading instruction. Questions from teachers at the end are phenomenal! Please forward to educators! www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfeF...

New paper from the Neurosurgery Research Team at BCM! "Learning and language in the unconscious human hippocampus" www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Beautiful work on effects of being multilingual on the brain showing importance of phonetic "experience-induced plasticity" and proposing new models of language processing in brain !! Brain is a truly fascinating organ !! @brainlanglab.bsky.social & team !!! 👏🏽👂🏽🧠 elifesciences.org/articles/90269

New lab paper led by @justfineneuro.bsky.social "Complementary roles for hippocampus and anterior cingulate in composing continuous choice”, now on bioRxiv! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

How does barcode activity in the hippocampus enable precise and flexible memory? How does this relate to key-value memory systems? Our work (w/ Jack Lindsey, Larry Abbott, Dmitriy Aronov, @selmaan.bsky.social ) is now in eLife as a reviewed preprint: elifesciences.org/reviewed-pre...

Two cool papers out in Neuron today on memory. 1. Animals can be trained to activate specific remote memories at will: www.cell.com/neuron/fullt... 2. Interactions between cortex and amygdala during reactivation in NREM sleep help enhance perceptual memories: www.cell.com/neuron/fullt... 🧠📈 🧪

Why do we not remember being a baby? One idea is that the hippocampus, which is essential for episodic memory in adults, is too immature to form individual memories in infancy. We tested this using awake infant fMRI, new in @science.org #ScienceResearch www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

New blog-post on the logic of mechanistic modeling. open.substack.com/pub/kording/...

Wrote a post explaining the logic of normative modeling - which is one of the reasons why I am trying to be precise about what is predicted by models from which assumptions. open.substack.com/pub/kording/...

Always thought we should use connectivity blueprints to investigate differences between human, chimpanzee, and macaque brains? www.jneurosci.org/content/earl... For Katherine Bryant’s latest masterpiece.

Are short-term memories just noisier versions of what we perceive? Are they fundamentally different? We (Chaipat Chunharas, @mjwolff.bsky.social, @meikehettwer.bsky.social and myself) delved into this in a paper out now in #elife: elifesciences.org/reviewed-pre.... For a quick summary, a 🧵 below:

New collaborative ms! We built & trained a neural network that is biophysically realistic, performs multiple economic choice tasks, and provides insights into orbitofrontal cortex. (We = Aldo Battista 😉) www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

@diamondn.bsky.social et al. find that sleep enhances memory for the order of events from an art tour, but not the details of the events. The sleep-related advantage for sequences persists for over a year. @brianlevine.bsky.social www.nature.com/articles/s41...

LLMs have shown impressive performance in some reasoning tasks, but what internal mechanisms do they use to solve these tasks? In a new preprint, we find evidence that abstract reasoning in LLMs depends on an emergent form of symbol processing arxiv.org/abs/2502.20332 (1/N)

Out now in Alzheimer's & Dementia, @annarosicka.bsky.social uses the @neurekaApp and data from thousands of citizen scientists to examine how well-established ricks factors relate to subjective versus objective cognitive ability across the lifespan. doi.org/10.1002/alz....

The actual thesis of this paper is very clear and well motivated by the engram literature! Worth a read if you're interested in memory! But, I TBH, I am totally not on board with the idea of "concept" versus "memory" neurons. Let's not pretend that these simplistic categories of cells exist...

Terrific how-to on communicating the value of basic research to the public in @thetransmitter.bsky.social by @tonyzador.bsky.social. You may be curious. But when you are communicating the value of what you do, it’s not about you. Point to discoveries. www.thetransmitter.org/outreach/how...

New episode of 𝐔𝐧𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐫 is live!🎙️ In this episode, I'm joined by @simyciri.bsky.social as we dive into why teens engage in risky behaviors—not out of recklessness, but due to a complex mix of developmental, social, and environmental factors. tinyurl.com/bdcn2b4r

Facing an uncertain financial future, many U.S. neuroscience Ph.D. programs are admitting fewer students. The Transmitter spoke with 20 programs about how the recent changes are affecting their admissions processes. By @claudia-lopez.bsky.social @callimcflurry.bsky.social bit.ly/41ptnk1
