I grew up watching the NOAA fleet come in and out of port. What a wonder they are: big radar balls and antennae up top, cranes and winches on the back for instruments and submersibles. They inspired and gave me such pride in country and science. Solidarity and love for all my NOAA friends today. 💙

I think it would be a good time to reinstantiate the mirror network for the # arXiv. It’s an essential piece of the global research community in math, physics, computer-science and adjacent fields. Under the current circumstances it should not only be hosted in the US. #quantum #math #physics #cs

We are calling for a nationwide and international boycott of all Elon Musk-related products and services. Sell your Tesla shares, avoid buying Tesla vehicles, cancel Starlink, and delete your X accounts.

This is why I’ve railed against AI for years, as I’ve been seeing my students’ abilities to create, critically think, analyze, weigh evidence, write analytically all wither away in this zombification trend. They’re creating the permanent underclass.

aaaaaaand the podcast with @ramiismail.com is online!! ..maybe it escalated a bit... (2 hours!!!!) Hope you enjoy it.. super inspiring & interesting youtu.be/qPFTzP2E-AE #gamedev #indiedev

If you’re using Julia in chemistry or materials science, we encourage you to submit a proposal to the Computational Chemistry and Materials Science Minisymposium at JuliaCon 2025 in Pittsburgh, PA, from July 21–26. @julialang.org @juliacon.bsky.social discourse.julialang.org/t/computatio...

You think Jacobian and Hessian matrices are prohibitively expensive to compute on your problem? Our latest preprint with @gdalle.bsky.social might change your mind! arxiv.org/abs/2501.17737 🧵1/8

I recently spoke at Ethereum Devcon about PopVax (@popvax.com)'s work developing novel mRNA vaccines to save 1 million lives each year, as part of a series of talks organized by Vitalik Buterin (@vitalik.ca) around his d/acc vision – defensive, differential, and decentralized accelerationism. On the risks of politician coins:

Perhaps obvious, but what gives ammo to the anti-sciebtists among other things is our own failure to fix the systemic issues within the science organization, proliferation of unreliable results and flawed incentives, lazy editors unscrupulous institutions and all

A little quantum discussion to start off the year. I was recently asked what is so revolutionary about Google's Willow chip. In short my answer was "nothing really, it's more of an impressive but expected evolution than a revolution.". Now I'm curious, do people in the community agree?

1/n Some time ago my colleague, excellent cook, and friend Ivan told me: "Cacio e pepe is the recipe that I screw up more often. Let's make a project studying systematically the physics of that sauce". Prepare to get cheesy, I'm glad to share the Cacio e paper preprint: arxiv.org/abs/2501.00536

Happy International Year of Quantum Science & Technology! #IYQ2025

I'm a huge fan of #Quarto, a (relatively) new technical publishing system. I've written a #julialang package, `DocumenterQuarto`, which automatically generates a Quarto project (e.g. website) with any Julia package's documentation!

You all said I was being paranoid and it was just coincidence. arstechnica.com/tech-policy/...

Paul Dirac's paper "The Quantum Theory of the Electron," in which he derived the relativistic equation for spin 1/2 particles like the electron, was submitted #OTD in 1928. It’s one of the most important results of 20th century physics, taking the deceptively simple form: i ℏ γ.∂ψ - m c ψ = 0 🧪 ⚛️

As I get older, I get more frustrated with the lack gender equality/equity/justice. As a mother, I find it infuriating to think that my daughter may still be facing these battles when she is my age. #EverydaySexism: A short #AcademicSky story/thread starts below, which are my opinions alone.

Greeting you on Bluesky with this reminder They are living, thinking, feeling beings And they deserve our respect, even if we haven't earned theirs. One love

Transition paths across the EMT landscape are dictated by network logic. A 🧵 on the perils of ignoring logic in ODE models of gene regulatory networks (GRNs) 🌟 also read on if you like: EMT, bifurcations, multistability, or Waddington-esque landscapes www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

I wrote this new symbolic differentiation engine called DynamicDiff.jl: github.com/MilesCranmer... It's really really fast at differentiating runtime-generated expressions – no compilation needed!

Have you ever wondered why diffusion models memorize and all initializations lead to the same training sample? As we show, this is because like in dynamic systems, the memorized sample acts as an attractor and a corresponding attraction basin is formed in the denoising trajectory.

To celebrate my moving to BlueSky I am giving away LaTeX goodies. Always wanted to have a clean, nice-looking, readable, complete and supporting visual track changes reply to referees? Look no more: the template you're looking for is here: github.com/paolocrosett... Happy BlueSkying to everyone.

🤔💭: Applied Category Theory and starting ACT projects. Working with GATAS and Topos Inst. these past few years on AlgebraicJulia and I think we are at a critical point. 🧪 Anyone interested in ACT projects with applications spanning public health, mathematics, ABMs, etc? #mathsky #medsky

Do machine learning researchers need intercontinental flights to prove their worth? Or can we rethink our customs so that academic impact doesn’t require excessive CO2 emissions? If you believe such change is possible, local meetups for @neuripsconf.bsky.social and other events are the way to go!

The ruble is plummeting, hitting 110,250 RUB/$ and showing no signs of stabilizing. The Russian Central Bank's move to raise interest rates to 21% (soon, in December, 22%) during the last months appears pretty ineffective in stopping the currency's free fall tradingeconomics.com/russia/inter...

Increase in economic risk from weather extremes via global supply chains. US and China are most vulnerable, but also Europe is strongly affected. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

I'm not sure how many of you are like me, but I listen to a lot of podcasts. Usually, I tend to go to history podcast (👋 @empirepoduk.bsky.social), but there is a bunch of good quantum pods out there too. So buckle up Quantum people, let's make a little 🧵

The only thing I'm really sad about as my PhD nears its end are the many aspects I couldn't dive into - fractal dimensions, quasi-periodic structures, quantum groups, or non-abelian path integrals. I'm not sure I will ever have such a long period of time again to deeply immerse myself into ideas. 🥲

Incredibly exciting (for me, at least) to see the first paper out based on the Tensor Flow Equation method that I developed. The authors investigate Stark many-body localisation in 1D and 2D and find some intriguing results! arxiv.org/abs/2411.14527

It's #ManifoldMonday! Today we talk about angles in a triangle. If you take a sheet of paper and draw a triangle, then the sum of the inner angles always sums up to 180 degrees. This observation goes back to the greek mathematician Euclid and is hence part of Euclidean geometry. 1/8

#OnThisDay, 35 years ago, the Velvet Revolution led to the resignation of the leadership of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. Congratulations to our Czech and Slovak friends on 35 years of #freedom and #democracy. (1/3)
