One of the difficult things about having excellent mentors is when they leave us. Gerd had an enormous positive influence on my career, as with so many others. He took a chance on a young, naive and "rough around the edges" Australian postdoc - and for that I'll always be grateful. RIP "der Chef".

I’m not afraid to say I’ve been in a 20 year committed relationship with theoretical physics. But this week I spent a lot of time with my old undergraduate flame, engineering. I gotta say, it’s a lot more fun now than it was when I was in my early 20s.
