Our first event! Join us for an event celebrating Trans Day of Visibility on the 30th of March with a great set of trans and non-binary readings at Argonaut. www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/quill-pres...

It’s time to dial up your trans allyship. Here’s how. www.lgbtqnation.com/... #transgender #trans #LGBTQ #LGBTQIA

🏳️‍🌈 We started @WeAreQueerAF.com as a response to the bad practices we saw while working in gay media and mainstream media newsrooms. This is how we're modelling the change we want to see, changing the media and helping thousands understand the LGBTQIA+ news 🧵👇

We're looking for readers! We're preparing to host an event for Trans Day of Visibility on the 30th March at @argonautbooks.bsky.social (details coming soon). If you're a trans or non-binary published or experienced reader in Scotland we'd love to hear from you. 5-10min readings.

Can’t be repeated often enough ‘The UK’s creative industries are vital to the economy. Valued at £124bn, they are worth more than the life sciences, aerospace and automotive industries combined. Arts and culture alone contribute an impressive £34.6bn.’ on.ft.com/42hzVmL

In just a few clicks you can email your MP and urge them to protect the creative industries instead of surrendering our rights and livelihoods for the profits of big tech. The quickest and easiest way to make your voice heard. www.creativerightsinai.co.uk

It’s me! And three other amazing writers!

It's difficult not to read this as an open declaration that Meta platforms will be made hostile environments for LGBTQ+ people for the foreseeable future. Even more so than they already were, refusing to take action on hate and sanctioning LGBTQ+ people for standing up to it.

Great to see that @quill.scot, the new organisation for #LGBTQ+ #writers in #Scotland is on here and has a handy wee starter pack of #queer Scottish writerly types.

Author Noreen Masud has withdrawn from the 2025 Oxford Literary Festival following its decision to platform “gender critical” speakers Helen Joyce and Julie Bindel. Joyce previously said “Every one of these [trans] people is a huge problem to a sane world.” www.thepinknews.com/2022/06/03/h...

Real solidarity ✊

I’ve just withdrawn from my panel at the OLF. Joyce is an absolutely chilling character: on record as saying that ‘every one of those [trans] people is a huge problem to a sane world'

A literary festival hosting a collection of anti-trans extremists who openly argue for the eradication of part of our community is the reason we need organisation in literary spaces. The polite toleration and acceptance of this extremism at the expense of trans people has gone on too long.

"The system denies that we are reliable bearers of fundamental truths about ourselves. Our lack of trust in that system is just the equal and opposite reaction: they don’t listen to us, so we don’t listen to them." transwrites.world/my-doctor-em...

The march of censorship of queer and trans writers is being enforced by both governments and corporations. We've rarely before needed solidarity so much, both within the community and outwith it. Because without that you will start hearing fewer of our voices, and not because we're not here.

"This is a make-or-break moment for arts and culture in Scotland. Artists and organisations have been pushed to the brink due to unsustainable funding pressures and uncertainty that must be remedied now." www.campaignforthearts.org/petitions/sc...

We now have over 50 LGBTQ+ Scottish writers in our starter pack (bsky.app/starter-pack...) and list (bsky.app/profile/quil...). Help us find more! Tag folk, or yourselves, in replies and we'll get you added in.

It's trans day of remembrance today. The day we remember all of those who lost their lives for being who they truly are. We hope and strive for a day when the tide of hate turns and no more lives are lost to it. All of us can help that day become a reality.

Today is Trans Day of Remembrance (TDoR), a day where we pause to remember those who we have lost around the world this year as a result of transphobic violence. It continues to be the case that Black trans women, trans women of colour, and trans sex workers are most at risk of murder.

We now have a list to match our starter pack! bsky.app/profile/did:... If you are a Scottish (live or born here) LGBTQ+ writer (any field) and you're missing from our starter pack please let us know. If you spot someone we've missed, tag them below!

The number of trans journalists allowed to discuss anything other than lifestyle & arts went from a handful in 2014 to almost none in 2024 as well.

Did you know that today marks the start of Book Week Scotland, an annual celebration of reading across the country! Here’s a stack of some amazing Scottish books, let me know if you’ve read any or what you’d add to the pile 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿💙📚

Please, if you are able, support Independent bookshops. They are the literary & social hubs of our high streets and communities. Without their continued support, we simply wouldn't be around to publish . Thank you.

We're putting together a starter pack of Scottish LGBTQ+ writers. If you're in the industry, if you live in Scotland or were born here, whether you write as an author, poet, screenwriter, or playwright - let us know if you're a member of our community. bsky.app/starter-pack...

If you’re interested in fighting book bans, this is a great starter pack to follow! go.bsky.app/L59xSVt

Our twitter account has been locked and archived. Our starter pack is up and running. Look forward to more from us in 2025 - There's plenty of work to be done making sure the Scottish literary scene delivers for LGBTQ+ people. bsky.app/starter-pack...

Arts funding

Arts, after the past 14 years of austerity, are already massively underfunded compared to our European neighbours. If this continues, as cuts like this suggest it will, then the UK, including Scotland, will become a desert for sustainable art and creativity.

England still scratching its head over this complex mystery.

Calling all trans and nonbinary writers writing trans and nonbinary characters, please add your books to this database so readers can find your stories more easily! transenbybooks.carrd.co #transbooks #nonbinarybooks #WritingCommunity

Many reasons to worry about this. One deeply felt: the sudden joy on the face of an LGBTQ+ young person when they see themselves reflected & acknowledged. In a book, a Pride display on a notice board, in a class. They walk a little taller. Being seen to exist can still be special.

Dozens of UK school librarians asked to remove LGBTQ+ books, survey finds. 53% of librarians polled asked to remove books – and that in more than half of those cases books were taken off shelves. We must not be dragged back into the era of Section 28. www.indexoncensorship.org/2024/08/bann...

The UK already has among the lowest state investments in culture across Europe. Over a decade of cuts has the arts grasping for what few means of support remain, devastating to lose yet another one in Scotland. www.creativescotland.com/news-stories...
