It’s been one month since Rümeysa Öztürk was kidnapped by ICE in the middle of Somerville.

Harvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions - rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking steps to make sure students can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and mutual respect. Let’s hope others follow suit.

We have had nearly two decades of panic about Free Speech on Campus and not a single case, not even the ones they made up, were as bad as what's happening now

People keep repeating "they can't do that, that's illegal" about everything that's happening, as if it were some kind of gotcha. But laws no longer apply. Without enforcement laws are just words on paper. If a mugger is stabbing you, is your reaction to tell them, "that's illegal, can't do that"?

If you accept that non-citizens have no right to due process, you are accepting that citizens have no right to due process. All the government has to do is claim that you are not a citizen; without due process you have no chance to prove the contrary.

I am very scared about the next few years but I actually have a lot of hope for America. Not confidence, not optimism, not expectation. But I have a lot of hope. We have an opportunity here to offer something new to the world by overcoming the struggles that are threatening to sink our ship rn.

AOC, @aoc.bsky.social, making the case for free speech alongside universal healthcare is so KEY for the left, because it's time progressives reclaimed the mantle of fighting for free speech from the faux free speech warriors of the right.

One of my Radical Leftist opinions is the government shouldn't be able to deprive anyone of life, liberty, or property without due process of law

Fellow Americans, are you ready to take to the streets yet? If not, ask yourself what else it will possibly take… because you’re about to lose the freedom to do so.

Columbia student and New Yorker, Mahmoud Khalil - who was targeted and detained for constitutionally protected speech - should be home with his 8 months pregnant wife today. Not missing in ICE detention, unreachable by his lawyers. 1/15

It’s worth noting that the two bills were (1) banning cross-dressing / drag / pride parades, and (2) literally removing trans children from their parents. Both horrific infringement on free expression. In any sane world these would not have been given the time of day let alone gone to a vote.

Top of @nytimes.com app and website right now. Trump critics muzzle themselves because they are afraid of retaliation, including physical threats to their families. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/06/u...

Definitely do not email them lyrics to greenday songs, a cake recipe, your grocery list....Definitely do not waste their time. #PeoplesMovement #50501Movement #NoKings

He’s scared. It’s working. Show up. #standupforscience

We are experiencing an assault on science unparalleled by anything I’ve seen in my life. It’s not one issue or another anymore, the entire institution is under attack by the most powerful individuals in the country. This Friday, where will you be? standupforscience2025.org

Sorry not sorry to everyone who thought this would be primarily an AI Math research account I mean, it still is, but we live in a society etc

Context that Corporate Media won’t say: Musk/Trump are firing anyone in a leadership position who is not a white male.

PSA that the AMS is currently running a survey with options to register your opinion about their support of DEI initiatives. If you’re a member, check your email and make your voice heard.

Polygraphs are pseudo-science at its worst, and it’s already shameful that the US government continues to use them for security clearances. Expanding to this new usage is wildly unjust, and possibly illegal.

The anticipatory swiftness with which certain organizations go along with attacks on diversity and rewritings of history suggests that maybe some of the folks in power think that these are genuinely good changes.

the gulf of America? oh, you mean the yawning void at the heart of our nation, the hole that can be filled only by recapturing a past glory which, perhaps, never even existed in the first place?

The CFPB is one of the American people’s best defenses against waste, fraud, and abuse. Demolishing it will, of course, lead to more waste, fraud, and abuse.

Someone at the American Bar Association ate their Wheaties this morning.

Exactly this. 💯 Let’s not get distracted — we need to fight *all* censorship, especially when it *does* relate to gender, race, marginalization, diversity, and inequity. These things MATTER -- science & society suffer when they are censored.

Happy ICML deadline to all who celebrate 🍻

Yes, this administration is dangerous and cruel, but they are also shockingly dim and incompetent. Opportunities are everywhere. Make everything as hard as possible. Resist every demand. Refuse entry without a warrant. Don’t take the buyout. Their problem solving skills are 📉
