Academic freedom lies at the heart of our profession and we must protect it at all costs. In consultation with colleagues, we have tried to articulate widespread concerns with respect to the upcoming ESIL conference in Berlin, in light of recent events.

"Either we act together to enforce international law or we risk its collapse." Read 🇨🇴 Gustavo Petro, 🇿🇦 Cyril Ramaphosa, 🇲🇾 Anwar Ibrahim and Varsha Gandikota-Nellutla in Foreign Policy: https://buff.ly/4hTpwTs

Very happy to share the publication of this Special Issue on Law and Technology, guest edited with my wonderful colleagues of the @esil-sedi.bsky.social IG on Intl Law and Technology @roxanav.bsky.social, @barriesander.bsky.social, @dimitrivdm.bsky.social and Rebecca Mignot-Mahdavi. 1/

This is a full purge of every single LGBTQ employee at the NSA. Rufo is falsely mischaracterizing a LGBTQ employee resource group as a "sex chat" to create pretext to fire every single member in it. This is a playbook they will run to purge the entire federal government.

Every major UK newspaper - left, right, broadsheet, tabloid - is running a front page campaign against copyright carveouts for AI training. I can't remember the last time any political cause had such broad support, let alone one so anti-big tech and so economically consequential.

Here @aleininger.bsky.social shows something that many had already expected based on anecdotal evidence. The Linke wins votes especially in those districts where the Greens lose votes. Very much in line with a narrative where the Linke appealed to frustrated progressives.

One of the first acts of German chancellor-elect Friedrich Merz after the elections is publicly declaring his intention to willfully break international law. A shadow if what's to come..

I will be sharing my paper on cross-platform labour this Wednesday (Feb 26, Melbourne time 8 pm)! Tune in to the online webinar if you are interested 😊

My @sciencespo.bsky.social research group recently hosted an expert webinar to discuss how codes of conduct in the DSA could establish better standards on safer platform design. Recording now up here, with some useful resources on safer design practices & existing codes: www.dsadecoded.com/webinar

For all the media hype about Sarah Wagenknecht, we will probably read little about the fact that Die Linke has profited massively from her leaving the party. As a clearly left-wing party, now without strong reactionary tendencies, it scored almost twice as much as the left-conservative BSW! #BTW25

Good summary right here

#Germany's federal criminal police office, not exactly known for over-counting such things, reports that at least 41,000 crimes with a right-wing extremist motive were committed in 2024, a 1/3 increase compared to 2023. 2023, with a 23% increase on 2022, had already marked an all-time high #farright

Chilling read by @okwonga.bsky.social "Far right’s xenophobia is not at the fringes of German society: it can be found in voices at its very centre" www.theguardian.com/world/commen...

This is so cruel and dangerous. U.S. men prisons are already terrible for any inmate, but particularly trans women will face horrible and systematic abuse.

Very disappointing statement by important anti-racist organization in Germany, which states that "Islamist threats" have to be "finally taken serious". This is not only factually untrue, for decades it has been considered the main terrorist threat, it also repeats a far-right narrative. Do better!

Genuinely couldn't believe this figure until I saw the Financial Times confirm it using Meta's own financial reporting data For THIS $100 billion is genuinely the kind of money you could "do the impossible" with. Crack nuclear fusion. HIV vaccine. Universal flu vaccine And they spent it on this

I have been having THOUGHTS and FEELINGS about the meaning and impact of the genocide in Gaza on international law as an academic discipline and area of practice and you can read them here: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Last week, I was in Jenin and Tulkarem, reporting on Israel’s ongoing operations in the refugee camps of the northern West Bank. Displaced Palestinian residents say Israel is deliberately making the camps unlivable. My report: @972mag.bsky.social www.972mag.com/jenin-tulkar...

Not the right place perhaps, but I'm looking for academics based in Cambridge who might be on leave for research in (April), May & June and would consider subletting their property. Brexit is working against me to find accommodation. Heard of anything? Do send me a DM :)

Some thoughts and pointers on the upcoming German elections on Sunday. Nearly all polling institutes have released final polls in the last days that show a very similar picture. It is nearly certain that the CDU/CSU will come out on top and Friedrich Merz is going to be the next Chancellor. 1/

The next annual conference of ESIL is to take place at Freie University in Berlin. International Law is being dismantled before our eyes, at the universities and in the streets of Berlin. The damage won’t be repaired with conferences and peer-reviewed articles. verfassungsblog.de/where-is-our...

A very important message to legal academics in Germany & maybe, in particular, to those who are involved in the organization (IG conveners included) of @esil-sedi.bsky.social annual conference at FU Berlin (ofc, the issue goes much beyond just this conference). verfassungsblog.de/where-is-our...

Thanks to everyone who made this important discussion possible - against all threats and censorship. And special thanks to Francesca Albanese and Eyal Weizman for their principled commitment and their willingness to be there with us.

Please mind that one of the original reasons given for why the in person event was not allowed to go forward was that FU wanted to avoid the presence of police on campus. It also had made the suggestion itself that the event be moved online (as detailed in the protocol of the Academic Senate).

Thanks to my courageous colleagues, KriSol, our students, and bUm - Raum für solidarisches Miteinander - the event with Francesca #Albanese and Eyal Weizman @forensicarchi.bsky.social that was cancelled at Freie Universität Berlin is still going forward today!
