It is a gorgeous sunny day, I am pruning wisteria, and all my chickens have come into lay! It must be spring ❤️

Guys, they’ve arrived today! My very own box of my very own book, #StoryofaMurder. Official unboxing video and other fun social media stuff coming soon via #Doubleday. It’s exactly 28 days in the UK (25 days in the US) before you can have your own copy. I can’t wait to know what you think!

Plus locations & opening hours of shops in towns we've never visited; train & bus timetables; timings for boiling & poaching eggs; & the weather forecast for 3 months hence. I've shouted 'I'm not bloody Google' so many times that the kids have taken to calling me 'Google' or 'Alexa' instead of 'mum'

I wrote about why male-only spaces & female-only spaces are not the same. The former shores up power; the latter are necessary because of disempowerment. But opponents of women-only spaces pretend they’re the same, and compare abused women to the Taliban. Link in bio!

In 1981, two women walked into a bar…and eventually overturned its male-only policy. My newsletter (link in bio) looks at how, when and why men have banned women from drinking in bars, from Mumbai to Milwaukee - and how women have resisted. rachelhewitt.substack.com/p/no-women-a...

New newsletter dropping tomorrow morning. This is the start of my 'No Women Allowed' project: each fortnight, I'll be exploring a different example of men banning women from certain spaces or activities. This week: No Women Allowed...in Bars and Pubs. Link in bio - subscribe to receive it!

There’s so much pressure on women not to be ‘exclusionary’ but it’s always been men who have been the exclusionary ones. Today I’m launching a new project, No Women Allowed, exploring how, globally, past & present, men have curtailed women’s freedoms, and women have fought back.

I really love this. Exhaustion and overwhelm is real and they also deplete me of hope. Hope is the foundation of my writing & also my life. Refilling that well is necessary. That's what gives us strength. Shortly, I'm going to put this phone away, read by the fire & bake cookies w the family. ❤️

‘The phrase “I can’t imagine” feels especially hurtful to hear, because the speaker is actually saying “I could try to imagine what you’re feeling, but I don’t want to.”’ This week’s Substack is about offering sympathy without saying “I can’t imagine” open.substack.com/pub/rachelhe...

Apparently my notes on the history of female animal rights campaigners are very tasty to kittens 🤷‍♀️

For a long time, I’ve supported a charity called Ascend. It helps girls & women in Afghanistan & Pakistan to gain fitness, freedom & leadership qualifications thru mountaineering. Trump has stopped their funding & they are in dire straits. To donate, visit ascendathletics.org/donation

It’s out!!!! Huge huge gratitude to all of our co-authors, whose brilliant contributions you can read here, and especially to my wonderful co-editor @teadevotee.bsky.social without whom this literally would still be a series of notes in my email inbox.

I'm working on a short story commission so while my head is in that general area I thought I'd do a few tweets about a story called The Berg. I wrote it a few years ago and one way and another it's stayed alongside me ever since.

I really wish that race directors would find other ways to describe events, beyond solely playing up the toughness. I want to do this event (Endure24) because it sounds fun and sociable and something a bit different. 'Brutal and relentless' is so macho and off-putting.

In this week’s newsletter, I explore women’s trauma in the past. I learn about the patients at La Salpêtrière psychiatric hospital in the 1880s, the treatments they received, and how some devised their own alternative ways to recover and heal. Link in bio

In November, a friend found a litter of kittens who'd been dumped by a river. She asked if I wanted any. In the event, they were too young to go anywhere other than a rescue. But yesterday - the 3rd anniversary of my husband's death - 2 of the kittens came to us ❤️

Some eagerly awaited post has arrived - the new book from @lucygobag.bsky.social ! Out in May from Hodder Press. Lucy is truly a human lifebuoy - I cannot wait to read it

The sofa project is finished, and I've written about it, and upholstery - and why you should give it a go - in this week's newsletter. Perfect weekend reading! Link in bio.

Yesterday I was reverse parking into a tight space at a busy shopping centre - and afterwards a couple came up to me to congratulate me on the precision of my parking!!! The man looked very serious, and gave me a nod, and said it was “top quality” 😂
