CALL YOUR MEMBERS OF CONGRESS, ESPECIALLY IF THEY ARE REPUBLICANS!!!

Gulp… “The rate of natural sequestration of CO2from the atmosphere by the terrestrial biosphere peaked in 2008. Atmospheric concentrations will rise more rapidly than previously, in proportion to annual CO2emissions, as natural sequestration is now declining by 0.25% per year.”

Brutal.

Fast forward to Trump’s state visit and Starmer could, if he was able, say to Putin’s poodle: “As you heard from the jeers on the streets outside, you have no backing across the United Kingdom.”

This is good news. I think I was one of the first to publicly raise the problem with "renewable diesel" (HVO) in this article around 18 months ago. www.irishtimes.com/environment/...

Judge Alsup has issued his written TRO, directing that OPM’s terminations of probationary employees across govt be "stopped & rescinded." “No statute—anywhere, ever—has granted OPM the authority to direct termination of employees in other agencies.” ... 1/3 storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Brilliant!

This is still happening. It's your Wednesday ice update - #Arctic sea ice extent is still the *lowest* on record for the date (JAXA) about 670,000 km² below the 2010s mean about 2,250,000 km² below the 1980s mean A winter for the record books in the Arctic. For the second time in February – & third time in 2025 – Holland American Line reports an outbreak to CDC. 🤮🤢 cruise at your peril 🤢🤮 All passengers must disembark for sanitation protocols. Even the sick ones! #protectportcommunities #cruisemaine #cruiseportland #norovirus

Alaska Sees Rise in Water Quality Issues as Cruise Tourism Surges In the last decade, violations, which the state records as “exceedances,” have grown from a typical 20 to 25 per year from 2015 to 2018, to closer to 75 per year more recently — well more than double. cc @radreduction.bsky.social

The call for “Real Zero” is very important as it focuses on achieving real emission reductions as opposed to using offsets. In Australia, allowing industry to use of offsets looks likely to undermine any real action that might otherwise come out of the safeguard mechanism.

Want to cut federal agencies? Go through Congress. Claim there’s waste? Hold Congressional hearings where things like, you know, “evidence” of claimed waste can be heard.

The Extreme Weather Report, February 20, 2025: This is your weather on fossil fuels.

🚢💨 Last week, @imohq.bsky.social Member States negotiated measures to reduce international shipping emissions.  Read our Policy Officer Blánaid Sheeran's statement on the progress made, and remaining challenges.👇 #ClimateSky #Greensky #IMO 🧵 1/2

The effective "capture" of #ICAO by industry interests has been clear for a long time. But it seems no governments are willing to acknowledge - never mind address - this failure. Fiddling while the world burns. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

"Without a ban on discharge of scrubber wastewater — or a mandate to use cleaner distillate fuels — ecosystems, ocean resources and coastal communities will continue to be threatened & human health risks will increase. Well this captures it unfortunately ..."we are not even moving in the right direction, let alone at the required pace".

Sarah Cooper used to make me laugh out loud. Now her comedy stings too sharp for even a chuckle. Yet I recommend watching. youtu.be/9cJ1IZsp750?...

The aviation industry is pushing biofuels as a “solution.” But biofuels = more demand for palm & soybean oil, more deforestation. We've joined 67 NGOs urging @IMOHQ: Don’t count biofuels in the new global fuel standard! 🔗 Read the full letter: docs.google.com/document/d/1...

Supporting a 3rd runway at Heathrow and pitting climate change mitigation against growth really is looking backwards Rachel Reeves! A good moment to post the petition for restricting air traffic from Stay Grounded again chng.it/CnPyY7kST7

What do you call a government that starts to purge the bureaucracy, announces concentration camps, targets a minority for prosecution, frees violent extremists and defies the constitution, all in its first two weeks?

The annoyance of listening to the morning news that climate change was a major factor in the LA wildfires, right next to an item on the UK govt plans to expand aviation, including Heathrow, with no plausible answer for climate emissions

This article "delves into how these collective efforts are reshaping tourism policies worldwide [and] how the bans are not just about curbing [cruise] numbers but…ensuring that these destinations remain preserved for future generations…"

"Cruise Lines At A Tipping Point: ...most tourist destinations welcomed more tourist business. ...that equation changed." "...expect to see more popular ports limiting their cruise traffic ... new alternative destinations may reach their own breaking point" too. www.forbes.com/sites/rogerd...

“The science is clear: heavy fuel oil scrubbers harm our oceans, & precautionary measures must be prioritized. Moreover, the prolonged use of heavy fuel oil bears the risks of disastrous oil spills & raises the emissions of climate killer Black Carbon.” @soenkediesener.bsky.social @nabu.de

This looks like a sure-fire must read.

What the hell is an "environmental complication" or "environmental matter?" If guests say they observed & videotaped an oil sheen due to a leak, tell us. Don't waste your time, or ours, blindly repeating the #gobbledygook statements from corporate felon Carnival Corporation's PR team🚢🏴‍☠️🤡 #cruise

Here is more on the perils of methane climate impacts from ill-considered globalized mega-projects using LNG (liquified fossil gas). Looks like a good and much-needed lawsuit, in the UK. (And GREAT animations in this short video - kudos.)

Town Manager: "Recalibrating the town's approach to cruise tourism from large vessel visitations to small vessel visitation is critical. Smaller boutique cruise lines will align with the town's capacity limits and offer high-value tourism opportunities." barharborstory.substack.com/p/full-steam...

"We saw that since 2015, a polarisation had occurred. The heartland [media] talked of climate change a little more than before but the elite coastal newspapers had invested in climate desks… [that] rest of America...just not talking about it...much..." economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/et-evok...

Gas isn’t the ‘backbone’ of our economy. It contributes a tiny percentage of budget revenues in Australia…and it employs far fewer people than McDonalds. Great stuff from @pollyjhemming.bsky.social

#graphicdujour #11 Acceleration in forcing apparent in how much more spaced out the recent points are. But is the linear pattern breaking? It's early to tell. But 2023-2024 looks especially daunting for those of us who remember how scary 1998 looked at the time.
