I can't tell you how much I hate this.

For decades, the US government has painstakingly kept American science #1 globally—and every facet of American life has improved because of it. The internet? Flu shot? Ozempic? All grew out of federally-funded research. Now all that's being dismantled. 1/ www.technologyreview.com/2025/02/21/1...

Sure, the USPS has problems. But we can't give up on it I was living in Guatemala when its national postal service shut down. It's never come back, and its absence enabled massive import fraud. Everyone loses when public services close.

📣 Attention terminated CDC employees! "I was a fed" on Instagram shares stories of affected federal employees. We want to amplify CDC voices too (anonymously)! Our platform reaches ~100K. 📣 Send your story to our tip line. Let's help people understand the impact. #SeeCDC #fedstrong

Scientists are now organizing events, called Stand Up for Science, on 7 March in Washington, D.C., and state capitals. So far, they have attracted more than 100 volunteers from some 30 states who are hoping to rally support for research as a public good. scim.ag/4328LAD

A few people have kindly lobbed this into the tl, but here's my own gift link: Me, in NYT Opinion, arguing we're not failing to handle H5N1 flu in cattle because the response is based on plans for bird flu in poultry and doesn't match dairy farming structures. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/20/o...

The DOGE firings have nothing to do with “efficiency” or “cutting waste.” They’re a direct push to weaken federal agencies perceived as liberal. This was evident from the start, and now the data confirms it: targeted agencies overwhelmingly those seen as more left-leaning. 🧵⬇️

Please call or write to your elected representatives and state Attorneys General and explain to them that NIH submissions to the Federal Register must be permitted immediately. This is a bureaucratic end run around a court order to resume NIH funding. 5calls.org

I'm now entering year 3 of my long covid. I'm better than I was, but it still touches everything I do. I'm lucky to have access to treatments to try, but there's really nothing for people with LC. Usually just people annoyed I'm masking. Now is a terrible time to defend health sciences.

🧵Who is opposing the Trump administration? I analysed 76 actions of the administration since inauguration and then searched for *meaningful* opposition to each. I grouped the types of opposition and considered what we can learn from both them & actions where opposition has been lacking 1/24

I am clinging to this as a possible silver lining to this terrible moment in global health, that our colleagues around the globe will step into leadership
