A wild fact is that the 1974(!!) AASHTO bike guide had a great deal of what is now considered modern bikeway guidance, which was then lost for 50 years.

There's challenges with bringing passenger rail back to Calgary and other cities. But Albertans have shown time and time again we're here to ride the rails when they're built. Let's build. www.ctvnews.ca/calgary/vide...

Alberta is gearing up to build their own passenger rail network, and this is a serious lesson learned moment. When hiring experts to help you with what you don't know, you should probably listen to those experts. What happened in Ontario is entirely avoidable in Alberta.

A rural Austrian village of 8,000 people gets 31 trains per day, while Columbus, Ohio, with a population of 913,000, receives none. We don't need a perfect rail system, but we deserve better than this.

Alberta is on the verge of creating one of the largest infrastructure projects in provincial history, a regional rail transportation network. Let's not squander this opportunity by only discussing pipelines as infrastructure.

Calgary Transit is running 20-minute headways during one of the largest attended single day events in Calgary. It's not a serious transit service. #lilacfest2025 #yyc #yyccc

I wonder if the marathon’s organizer, the Calgary Marathon Society, has advocated to open up the streets to all Calgarians every once in a while. Their mission is to promote health and fitness, after all.

Most cities in Canada: “our housing strategy is for everyone to move to Alberta”

Road pricing works and we should do it anywhere with regular traffic.

Alberta is now officially over 5 million people as of this morning. These people need affordable homes and efficient transportation. Fortunately, trains and transit can help facilitate both of those needs. #ableg #alberta

New York’s (de)congestion pricing is one of the most successful public policies imaginable. Just no downside, except a few entitled motorists honking on social media about how only they represent working people. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Really proud to have written a piece in the Globe and Mail with @wklumpen.bsky.social about why investing in transit is a great approach to soften the blow of the trade war! www.theglobeandmail.com/business/com...

Wonder what the downtown Shuttle was. #Calgary #CalgaryTransit

Canada was going to finally join the world with Euro style, clean and quiet high speed rail; nation-building. Not if Poilievre wins. It’s not in his platform.

Canada’s real comparative advantage is public transit. That should be our trade-war strategy. @rmtransit.bsky.social @wklumpen.bsky.social www.theglobeandmail.com/business/com...

Is that trains for Alberta? 👀🚆🚄🚈🚅

👀 Something is really sticking out in the Liberal party platform released today. A federal government that's willing to invest in Alberta Passenger rail. This is a huge commitment and the first time we've seen acknowledgment of this happening from the federal level.

Alberta Transportation Minister complaining about bike lanes in Edmonton, concerned only with motor vehicle traffic flow and connectivity.

The parts of the world with the best and highest rail ridership, are the places with strong cycling connections. This type of attitude is short-sighted by a government that wants to encourage train use in a future provincial rail plan. Cycling is key to unlocking rail travel.

A 22min conversation about 16 Ave N and how it’s unattractive and an unpleasant place to be/walk and not once do they use the word Stroad or talk about how nobody wants to be near 6 lanes that carry 50,000 vehicles a day!🙄 #Calgary #Stroad #ThisIsCalgary podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/t...

If Albertans have shown anything over the last 4 decades, it's that we will take trains when they're offered. Build the trains and run them well, we will come. Is a Potential Rail Megaproject on Track in Alberta? www.westernstandard.news/alberta/is-a...

If we want to revitalize shopping malls, may I humbly suggest whatever entrepreneur puts an indoor play place into City Centre might do quite well with all the downtown and transit connected families! Swimming lessons at the Y are packed on weekends!

James May, former host of [checks notes] Top Gear, welcome to The War on Cars.

This is cool, but it's too bad Calgary Transit gave up their transit specific brand and just rolled into generic city service. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Electric trains for the win 😎😎😎

Just a couple of pictures of some intercity and regional train travel in a country that's similar to density, city distance, and size to Canada. Not investing in rail travel is policy choice, not physical limitations.

The driver ran a stop sign.

I continue to believe that urbanism is not inherently partisan, which is why it’s so sad that the culture wars have melted people’s brains enough to polarize against things as obviously good as active transportation.

Maybe if we pursue closer relationships with Europe, they can teach us how to build trains cheaper than the United States.

As a rule of thumb, the number of smiling happy people in a document is inversely proportional to its technical soundness.

Canadian government announces plan to link Québec City-Montréal–Toronto with 300 km/h (186 mph) high-speed trains, with construction beginning in 4-5 years. Would reduce travel times from Montréal–Toronto to 3 hours. www.cbc.ca/news/politic...

BIG NEWS! Official announcement of high-speed rail in Canada. And it has a name: Alto. 300 km/h trains to run from #Toronto to #Quebec City. Trudeau made the announcement at a press conference in #Montreal today. 🧵 www.cbc.ca/news/politic...

"Dreeshen pointed to rezoning around train stations to attract housing and business as part of the equation, depending on where they’re sited." City of Calgary has a difficult time understanding this concept. calgaryherald.com/news/politic...

Heads up! There's still plenty of time to fill out the survey for the Passenger Rail Master Plan. Let the province know how you want to see passenger rail advance in this province. Survey closes 15 April 2025. www.alberta.ca/passenger-ra...

Donald Shoup's influence was vast: throughout urban planning departments in cities and universities all over the country, there are self-defined "Shoupistas" who promulgate his ideas on a decreasingly skeptical world. The tweed-wearing, bike riding academic will be sorely missed.

The problem with the North American commuter rail model is it doesn't even work that well for commuting. Need to go in to work late? Leave early to pick up kids? Stay late for a show? Often no train for you.

Traffic fatalities are the result of a policy choice. If Calgary's leaders cared about safety they would treat this as an urgent call to action. Lower speed limits, change street design, create more space for people walking and biking. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Have your say! Alberta is extending the survey for the Passenger Rail Master Plan to April 15th. Let them know how you want trains to work in the province. your.alberta.ca/ab-passenger...

“Calgary is being held hostage on our own project,” Coun. Mian said. The Green Line approval was the last straw for Mian, who told fellow councillors she wouldn't be running for re-election because of this decision. #yyc #yyccc #calgary

We've said it before and we'll say it again, Albertans want to take the train. It should also be noted that a large number of Albertans want LRT funded. Albertans want rail network built as soon as possible: government survey results edmontonjournal.com/news/politics/… via @edmontonjournal

Did Minister Dreeshen & the Alberta UCP really decide to blow up a $7 billion infrastructure project based on a 2 page document pitched by a third party group? No wonder they don't want to stand behind their #greenlineyyc plan & cost share the risk. What a farce. livewirecalgary.com/2025/01/18/p...

Max capacity passengers per hour: * Boring Co’s Vegas Loop: 4,500 * NYC subway 6 train: 105,000

Crossing gates and signals! So the “you just built a train” jokes are still good, but now it’s just…a really really bad train
