In this week’s “A Habit of Hope,” I write about a newspaper that arose in the wake of the epic Flood of 1982 & brought vital information and connection to a community – a newspaper that lasted only 18 days. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Inverness Daily News. open.substack.com/pub/ahabitof...

No doom today. Less heartsick venting about the administration taking over the board of the Kennedy Center, more music in the streets. Less asking “why won’t they do something“ and more showing up in person at your Congressmember‘s office /1

OK Folks. It’s one thing to say #wehavethepower & it’s another to show it. Whatever you need to spend $ on, do it before or after 2/28. And if you absolutely must shop, shop local. When we organize together, we have more power than we know. Take it seriously, pass it on. Please and thank you.

Seen on the fence at a neighbor’s – a neighbor who recently was waving a “space force“ flag. The thing about tyrants is they always have to worry about revolution. You never know when the people are going to reach a tipping point.

I do not understand this app. I keep getting more and more followers – I think because I am on some lists with popular people – but nobody seems to see anything I post! Anyone else having this issue? What do I not understand about how this works here? Thanks!

Who was this guy!? He was a local hero who got shit done. You can read about it in this week’s installment of A Habit of Hope - which also features Yosemite, Los Lobos, and Rebecca Solnit. It will all make sense. open.substack.com/pub/ahabitof...

I knew that my expertise as an indie folk rock musician would come in handy someday. 🧵: So they are gutting NOAA, the FAA, the CDC, etc., as you know, in order to ultimately privatize and profit from the services they provide. The CDC is currently barred from posting avian flu info, for example /1

This is the way

Where’s John McClane when you need him? And what can we learn from positive deviance? open.substack.com/pub/ahabitof...

On the way to a family gathering in Phoenix, my hubby and I spent a couple nights at the Grand Canyon. It felt good to be on the edge, looking through the strata of time, as the cold breeze blew through to my skin. This week’s essay is about positive deviance. open.substack.com/pub/ahabitof...

Thought: an example of Pete Hegseth’s utter incompetence— he already told the whole world the “continuation of government” escape route

I find myself caught between “this can’t be happening“ and ”it is happening.“ I think that’s human nature. But I will tell you that when I embrace, painfully, the latter, I suddenly have purpose.

Happy to report that I just got a retired Republican cop friend to call all three representatives about the treasury department takeover

It's we the people vs. the broligarchs. Excellent framing.

He wants to divide us into "us vs. them" and he's on to something but not in the way he thinks. Whether we voted for him or not, it's time for us to get laser-focused on us vs THEM. This week's "A Habit of Hope" is live. ahabitofhope.substack.com/p/us

If you haven't already, may I suggest making a donation to the Internet Archive, aka the Wayback Machine? It's important in this autocratic moment that we have a solid record of our history. archive.org

This week I did what I said I wasn’t gonna do, what I told everyone we should all not do. I let myself get completely consumed by the news. and beauty. Xxoo

This isn’t over. Glad a judge granted a stay on the funding freeze until Monday. But they want to push this to the SC which will likely rule the EO unconstitutional. And then Trump will do it anyway, setting up a constitutional crisis. SNAP & Medicaid & cuts to the VA are a distraction. It’s a coup.

What can Muhammad Ali teach us about the first 100 days of this presidency? I wrote a thing. ahabitofhope.substack.com/p/float-like...

Today's "Habit of Hope" is about The Greatest, the GOAT, the Louisville Lip -- what can Americans learn at this particular moment in time from Muhammad Ali? ahabitofhope.substack.com/p/float-like...

Tell me again about Democrats’ “identity politics”

Et tu, snoop?

This week we visit the Navajo Nation and learn about a person in the process of becoming great. ahabitofhope.substack.com/p/on-the-roa...

20 degrees on Inauguration Day 2009, 2 million people on the Mall. FYI

What are everybody’s plans for Martin Luther King Day?

Be a cog in the wheel of democracy. Be sand in the gears of oligarchy. That’s our assignment.

The man with a speech impediment gave a farewell speech for the ages. History will remember his warnings about the oligarchy and the promise and risk of technology, just as it has remembered Eisenower’s prescient warning about the military industrial complex.
