Today I have to present my work on Epistemic Loneliness for the first time to ~400 people. As I prepare my 90th slide it dawn on me that I really only needed one. #philsky #philosophy

Here's an interview with me for the "Always Choose Orange" podcast about the creative process behind making the podcast: www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgb3...

🔥 Hot off the press! 🔥 Are preprints reshaping journal publishing—or being absorbed into it? Our new paper in JDoc examines the dynamics at play! 👀 With @juancommander.scholcommlab.ca, @stephenpinfield.bsky.social, @fleerackers.bsky.social, & Irene Pasquetto 📖 doi.org/10.1108/JD-0... (1/🧵)

The nature of error matters to #philsci in general. The notion of error IN nature is significant to some accounts in philosophy of biology (e.g. cancers are often understood as MISTAKEN cellular expressions). I posted this because I’m looking for recent literature/references/reviewers on the topic.

Culture in general, but pop culture in particular. The US has been undeniably at least as influential for at least a century as the renaissance or the enlightenment in everything from fashion to music to film to technological development and adoption.

A question for #philsci, any literature, references on the notion of error/mistakes in nature? I can’t seem to find the right keywords to find the literature on the nature of (objective/mind-independent) error…

I can’t with so much irony… #sts #philsky

I've been writing a series of essays for PBS on men whose style I admire. The latest is about James Baldwin, a man who knew how to sing through clothes. www.pbs.org/wnet/america...

Imagine saying this with a straight face… #sts

LFG!

This is an excellent resource for those of us working on what we call ‘strange error’ in AI. That being said, the list of terms is missing ‘strange error’.

👍 AI mirage 👎 AI hallucination So many have objected to "hallucination" as a description of faulty AI outputs. We need a term that doesn't suggest conscious delusion. @xolotl.org and I analyzed 80+ alternatives and settled on "mirage." We make the case here: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

When someone suddenly discovers legacy/inflated code, technological lock-in, and the problem of opacity in software systems all at the same time… as if it was something nobody had pointed out for years, even philosophers (who usually take a while to get with the program) #philsky #philsci #aiethics

Loneliness as a security threat.

Revised: AI as Agency without Intelligence: On Artificial Intelligence as a New Form of Artificial Agency and the Multiple Realisability of Agency Thesis Freely available at papers.ssrn.com/sol3...

Showed this to my critical reasoning class. Everyone thought it was very timely and identified with the moderate and how they are attacked for not being dogmatic. Showed it to my data ethics course and everyone attacked the moderate for not having a strong-enough belief in an ideology/cause. 🤷‍♂️

The Memory Palace doing what we can to share the love of philosophy of memory more widely. ❤️❤️❤️ ¡Besos! #philsky #philscisky

I'm sorry but this is a bad argument! (ducks cowardly)

Here is the Turing centenary conference we organized at BU's Center for Philosophy & History of Science when I was director: www.bu.edu/cphs/colloqu... & the Boston Studies volume Juliet & I edited from conference referenced below: link.springer.com/book/10.1007... #philsky #HPS 🏳️‍🌈

In case you are interested in my other work on loneliness (currently under review) here’s an unrevised draft on Epistemic Loneliness. philsci-archive.pitt.edu/23916/1/What... #philosophy #philsci #philsky #psychology

My side project on the philosophy of loneliness keeps expanding. Here are some new unrevised thoughts on the different kinds of loneliness, particularly a loneliness that arises in virtue of our core values. philsci-archive.pitt.edu/24699/1/Axio... #philsky #philsci #philosophy #psychology

The existence of this kind of stuff and these kinds of individuals makes me very happy. We are so lucky to live in this era where this is so easily accessible. It basically made my week.

I know this may be controversial, particularly since it seems a bit too early to tell, but… are The Strokes the best band of the 21st century? #musicsky #music

Andrej Karpathy released a new course yesterday that focuses on large language models (LLMs), particularly the technology that powers ChatGPT 🎯. 📽️ www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xTG... #LLM #AI #DataScience #DeepLearning

2004 was like the philosophy equivalent of music’s 1971/1991. Just to name a few awesome releases: Humphreys’ “Extending Ourselves”, Baird’s “Thing Knowledge”, Frankfurt’s “The Reasons of Love”. So much good thinking outside the box, daring, etc. just 20 years ago. #philsky
