Film on Film Season at BFI is in full swing - checked out a rare 35mm screening of Bill Forsyth’s hilarious & touching LOCAL HERO. It’s like a Capra movie but it never has The Big Speech ™️ where the lead tells you what the movie is about - its power is how it leaves the audience to infer its meaning

Comics super star Philippa Rice is strengthening her title as one of the most exciting multidisciplinary artists in the UK by writing a fantasy novel. No illustrations, just raw fun prose. Is there nothing this girl can’t do? I tried to hate-read it over lunch & it was too good (jk)

I think it’s near impossible to hook teen boys that aren’t already readers but the middle grade boy readers can be given something to keep them reading so they don’t stop when they age out of MG - it’s up to the book industry to make that happen coz writers are definitely game

It’s always interesting when critics become writers becuz making art is such a vulnerable act & so hard - it’s a small miracle when something works. I wonder if that makes them more sympathetic? I think the only crimes in art that you can drag an artist for is arrogance, insensitivity & laziness

I wrote an entire chapter book in a day - from 7:15 am to just 5 minutes ago. It’s been percolating in my head since Feb & it came out today in a big whoosh. I’ve already got the artist lined up for it - i confidently can say that the art will be amazing & the story is decent, if I say so myself

Happy publication day to me! Nate Yu’s Blast From the Padt is out today! It’s my third novel for kids! I had a lovely London launch at Papercat Bookshop in Herne Hill organised by my publishers Piccadilly Press.

It’s very obvs that part of the reason why manga is kicking western comics ass right now is how much it caters to female and queer readers - even Shonen manga that is a demographic for boys 8-18 has broadened its scope to be more inclusive & is reaping the benefits

I don’t think black stories are niche - I grew up watching Kenan & Kel, Sister Sister, Fresh Prince, Moesha, Static Shock etc - they were hugely popular - their disappearance is very similar to when the comic industry neglected its vibrant female readership to focus on male readers.

I think the only book event I’ve done what had a big black presence was the Free Book Festival - not because the books were free but because it was held in a multicultural part of London. We need more events held in inner cities.

There’s nothing like the dopamine rush of an amazing gig or movie to make me rush off home use that euphoric energy to write something kinetic & fun

The crushing disclaimer that ran ahead of Bass Player magazines October 2004 interview with Brian Wilson painted a vivid picture of a profoundly traumatized man that I've never been able to shake.

Behold: crab bell Before I pack it for moving. Several things I’m leaving behind in storage at the bearents house. But not this. Too important.

Its cool looking at historical political cartoons during the civil rights movement becuz they portray the past reality rather than the whitewashed version we live with today. Like this one that satirises the violence at MLK’s nonviolent protests when today they’re presented as peaceful kumbaya fests

This is the Avengers of animation lol

Saw a very rad & emosh musical about section 28 at my 2nd home (Royal Court) and made friends with Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys who was sat next to me - he was not expecting me to ask him a question about his days as an editor for Marvel UK (he told me his favourite character is Silver Surfer)

Receiving gobsmacking art in my inbox for a new project will never get old.

y’know that feeling when you leave a party or event & something that washed over you comes back when you’re quietly sitting on the bus? Someone asked me “did you get some help writing your book?” and that’s wild to me. How hard I’ve worked - there’s not a word in my book that wasn’t written by me

I can’t believe I’m going to my local library again to write my new book! Can I get someone to write my book for me or be my badly paid ghost co-writer?

if Thunberg is brave enough to repeatedly put herself directly in harm’s way, then journalists can be brave enough to say that a civilian vessel was illegally seized in international waters, and its crew abducted

I need to rewatch 2000s Battlestar Galactica

Australian reporter Lauren Tomasi was shot in the leg with a rubber bullet by an officer in Los Angeles:

Back in the day (pre-crunchyroll, pre-torrent sites), i contributed $ to a fan translation group who subtitled the Yumi Tamura “Basara” anime. In exchange for my “donation,” i got a VHS tape of the fan-subtitled episodes & a thank you in the credits. Obviously, things are *very* different now.
