We worked for months with USAID to build an $85,000,000 project to end TB in two regions of the Philippines. The project is funded by private money, the Philippine government, and matching USAID funds. It could provide a blueprint for eliminating TB worldwide--except it's...not happening.

There’s a brief part in the middle of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony where only the bass violins play the “Ode To Joy” melody. It’s sublime. Audio recording and playback completely fails to capture the low frequency sound waves that fill the space and splash against our eardrums.

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.
