What are we doing?

Lander is incorrect that a judicial warrant is required (only an administrative warrant), but ICE refuses even to show him that, which is outrageous. If they have a warrant, they should show it. If they don't, they don't have arrest authority. But him holding on to the guy... could be trouble.

The administration that wants you to know how much they care about fighting antisemitism is doing this to prominent American Jewish elected officials.

NYC Comptroller Brad Lander was just arrested by Trump’s ICE agents because he asked to see a judicial warrant. This is fascism and all New Yorkers must speak in one voice. Release him now.

Update: Padilla said his FBI and National Guard escorts were in the room and stood by silent as he was forced out of the room and put to the ground. They did not get involved as one might expect a security escort would and should.

"A reporter from @thecity.nyc had overheard one agent say to another minutes before Lander’s arrest, 'Do you want to arrest the Comptroller?'"

🚨 There’s a lot of horrific news out of Washington right now—but you might have missed this: Senate Republicans just introduced a plan to sell off 120 million acres of our public lands. Let me break down what’s in the bill and why it’s a full-scale land grab. 🧵

Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani, another mayor candidate who has cross endorsed Lander, speaks to crowd.

“You do not have the authority to arrest U.S. citizens,” Lander repeated, as the officers tightened handcuffs to his wrists.

NYC comptroller Brad Lander was handcuffed and detained at a Manhattan immigration court today. We should know there is a process of normalization occurring.

Brad Lander--comptroller of the city of New York, and one of the leading mayoral candidates--has just been arrested by masked federal thugs. @bradlander.bsky.social www.amny.com/news/brad-la...

ICE just arrested Brad Lander, the NYC Comptroller and one of the leading candidates for Mayor, without grounds. He was conducting routine immigration court work, escorting individuals from hearings. He asked ICE for their warrant - well within his legal rights. This is political intimidation.

what is it called when people who aren't cops and don't have a warrant drag you away, because I don't think "arrest" is the word

Sen Mike Lee & the silence from Republicans made it clear: decency is in the rearview mirror. After he mocked a political assassination, Ed Shelleby, a senior staffer to Sen Tina Smith, wrote to Lee’s top staffers. @lawrenceodonnell.msnbc.com read it on-air, and honestly everyone should hear it.

“If we do not stand up to Peter Thiel, they’re going to come after all of us.” 13 people were arrested protesting Palantir’s surveillance of Americans. Palantir is profiting off of ICE raids. It’s refining its tracking techniques & gathering data at lightning speed. @moreperfectunion.bsky.social

The gunman no doubt thought of himself as a good person, as someone who was pro-life, but his ideology brought him to a place where he shot 17 bullets into a couple who got into politics to help get health insurance for his daughter, who has spina bifida.

Melissa Hortman just days before her tragic assasination

We won’t amplify it, but the president posting that Dems are “sick of mind” and “hate our country” immediately after 2 Dem lawmakers and their spouses were shot in their homes is the opposite of leadership. Gas on the fire.

According to the latest WaPo/Schar School poll, Trump’s handling of deportations has 37% approval, 52% disapproval. And Quinnipiac has it at 40% approval, 56% disapproval. But @facethenation.bsky.social insists “public approval is so high on deportation.”

To the dads who protected us, provided for us, showed up—and taught us how to stand ten toes down: we see you, we love you, we thank you. Happy Father’s Day.

Something just hit me. Trump’s tactics might have just awakened a sleeping giant. All day, I’ve been seeing clips of children of immigrants newly activated: speaking up and pushing back harder than their parents ever could. Future voters.

The targeted attack on Minnesota state lawmakers, Sen. John Hoffman and Rep. Melissa Hortman, is absolutely horrific. Violence like this has no place in a democracy. I’m praying for their healing, their families, and every public servant who has to wonder if doing their job makes them a target.

Walz announces that Rep. Melissa Hortman is dead as a result of a "politically motivated assassination"

absolutely horrifying: "Minnesota state senator John Hoffman in Champlin and Minnesota state representative Melissa Hortman in Brooklyn Park were reportedly shot in their homes by a gunman impersonating a police officer."

Two Minnesota lawmakers and their spouses were shot by a man impersonating a police officer. The suspect: a white male with brown hair, dressed like a cop. 📌 Sen. John Hoffman and Rep. Melissa Hortman, along with their spouses, were shot in overnight attacks in Champlin and Brooklyn Park.

We’ve uncovered fraud, waste, and abuse! ICE has now exceeded its congressionally approved budget. ICE is violating the Antideficiency Act by spending beyond Congressional authorization.

Undocumented immigrants paid an effective federal income tax rate of 5.27% in 2022. That means they paid a higher effective tax rate than 5 of the richest Americans…and a higher effective tax rate than 55 mega corporations. So let me ask you: who are the real freeloaders?

First, do no harm.

Listen to this great American. This nation is privileged to have a man of this character in the United States Senate. Thank you @padilla.senate.gov. We stand with you.

A federal judge ruled President Donald Trump unlawfully federalized members of California's National Guard. The administration is appealing the decision. Follow live updates.

Not taking anything away from Senator Padilla because he was treated atrociously But I JUST want to remind everyone that the Congresswoman LaMonica McIver, a Black woman, was just indicted for just asking questions at an ICE detention center in her state Keep that same energy of support for her

Booker: He was made to kneel before the authority of the executive… They treated a member of the United States senate violently after he identified himself, dragged him out of a room, threw him upon the ground, and put him in handcuffs

There's a fun little nesting doll of fascism in this, from -They tackled and handcuffed a US Senator -For asking a question of an admin official -Who had just stated plainly that the federal government wanted to "liberate" a city/state from its leaders

Sen. Chris Murphy: "Spectacle is not illegal. Raising your voice is not a crime in this country [...] The standard here seems to be disruption, that if you are speaking truth to power, then you are going to be met by violence."

What happened to @padilla.senate.gov is an attempt to intimidate anyone with a dissenting view of this Administration and stop them from exercising their First Amendment rights. We will not be silenced. youtu.be/7dNpkFlP0BQ

Sen. Merkley: “I'm extremely outraged that the executive branch's security team have shoved a U.S. Senator out of a room…and handcuffed that Senator. This is what we expect to see in authoritarian nations that can't tolerate a question.”

SHUT. IT. DOWN. A senator was dragged out of a press conference for standing up for his constituents and against fascism. Watch how your representatives and senators respond to their own colleague being treated like this. That'll show you how they'll react when it's *you* on the ground.

What happened to Senator Padilla is absolutely DISGUSTING. Point blank, period. This shit is out of control. Another elected official disrespected while doing their job. (1/2)

Yes. I thought that was what I said. But yes. And it will work. It has always worked and we are not different people.

Sen. Luján on Sen. Padilla being manhandled and handcuffed at Noem’s press conference: “This is nonsense…The executive branch is doing this to our colleagues…Will someone here have the backbone to tell the president of the United States, ‘You crossed the line.’”

What happened to Senator Padilla in California today is outrageous. Senator Padilla is a respected leader of great dignity and he has every right to ask a question of Secretary Noem without being slammed down and handcuffed.

This is why so many of Trump’s public interpreters are young white women. They bring this to his toolkit. Did anyone else read Jeff’s piece on this re: Noem? It is in the pocket. religiondispatches.org/dont-take-th...

It is fascism. At a journalism event I asked about using the word so journalism can cover and explain it. I was told that we can't call fascists fascists because it would put off the fascists. This is fascism. Those who refuse to identify it are not doing journalism.

“Nobody knew who he was” — Kristi Noem on a US senator

"I am Senator Alex Padilla" is the first thing he says. There is nothing the Trump Administration won't lie about.
