If you're an REI member, you can vote to toss out the board that's endorsed Trump's candidate for Dept. of Interior and has worked to stop REI unions. Vote runs until May 2nd. Spread the word. vote.escvote.com/REI/

Read this a few years ago and I’ve been thinking about it a lot recently. No reason.

600+ volunteers. 8 neighborhoods. ≈7,000 ballot signatures collected. In a single day. Our momentum is powered by people.

Okay. So I went out today petitioning signatures for letters to the CEOs of the NYC hospitals who have preemptively cut off healthcare to trans people under 19, and I was dreading it. New Yorkers hate getting stopped by people with folders or clipboards. I know because I’m one of them.

Congratulations to our wonderful writers @rabusby.bsky.social and @ravenjake.bsky.social, whose Nightmare short stories have been nominated for the Stoker award! bramstokerawards.horror.org/front-page/t...

OMG what a wild week! I’m freaking thrilled to be a Bram Stoker nominee! “She Sheds Her Skin” is the first new story I’ve had published in eight years. It means so much to know that people are connecting with it, and to be included on a list with so many other writers I respect and admire!

Purely coincidentally looked up the Rhysling nominees today and was so delighted to see “Veiling the Statues” listed there! It was a very good year for spec poetry, and I’m so honored to have made the list. strangehorizons.com/wordpress/po...

Unripe bananas don’t taste like anything.

Somewhere a lone writer works on a story that will make you smile, cry, or nod in deep understanding. They don't know you and you may never meet, but your donation today may help their tale come to life. Check out our GoFundMe at gofund.me/729217a7

Hey you know how folks are way more likely to leave a bad review than a good one? If your representative at ANY level of government does something you like, reach out and thank them. They’ll FOR SURE be hearing complaints about it from the other side, so they need to hear the good reviews, too.

Here’s my organizing tip. It’s an oldie but a goodie. Find your people. Three or four or five people. These are the folks who, when they hear about an action, they let you know, and vice versa, and then y’all show up together. You got this.

Yes, things are bad. Okay. Things are almost unspeakably bad. We have to decide what spaces we want to occupy- virtually and in the world. And we have to show up. www.404media.co/you-cant-pos...

Do Not Comply In Advance: bossy, already a cliche, implies permission to comply later Fuck You, Make Me: leads by example, directs yelling at opposition instead of allies, easy to chant at a protest or put on a banner

I’m sorry, I think there’s been a mistake. I asked for bread and roses and I got bread and circuses.

This is my final piece for BoLS. It's about Kira Nerys, trying to fit a uniform made by a system that oppresses, and the consequences of that. A lot of people rn are thinking of passing, of fitting in to survive. But if you choose to wear a uniform, it should always feel a little too tight.

“Sell your lives dear.” I’ve had this single line from John Brown’s Body by Stephen Vincent Benét in my head since I read it a few weeks ago. Though his approach to retelling the Civil War is definitely a product of the time he wrote it, Benét’s language still fucking hits all the way through.

Today would be a good day to support an aid organization that provides trans people with HRT supplies

I'm just going to (re)post this whenever I need to remind myself. Maybe it'll help you too? 1. Focus on things in your control & take ONE action there. 2. Limit your inputs. You can't help if you're paralyzed.

So glad NYC is spending resources to materially harm our neighbors--many of whom are immigrants more at risk than they've been in years--to protect me from *checks notes* cheap, delicious fruit. Everyone involved in this should feel ashamed.

Congratulations to everyone on the Stoker preliminary ballot! We're ecstatic for Nightmare writers @rabusby.bsky.social, @ravenjake.bsky.social, Victor Forna (listed for short fiction) and Haralambi Markov (short nonfiction). Here's where to read their works:

So honored and honestly absolutely beside myself to have this story included on the preliminary ballot for the Bram Stoker Awards! I feel like as a writer I should be able to be more articulate about it but seriously, seriously, just so thrilled!

I’m currently reading The Dawn of Everything by David Graeber and David Wengrow and it is so excellent. It’s dense, it’s challenging in a way that has nothing to do with the language they use (which is deeply accessible,) and it feels deeply relevant to how we perceive the current moment.

Good Christ the shoving AI down our throats and hiding it in every goddamn app like red dye 5 makes me want to never use a computer to write again.

This is a marathon, not a sprint. Don’t give up, just keep going.

Bona Books is slamming into the new year with a brand new project. WRATH MONTH will be a punk anthology of queer rage. With the burning wreckage of 2024 behind us, we want SFF stories that crash mainframes, collapse empires, and trample normativity. Smash “Follow” on Kickstarter:

3 hours left for @thecosmicbgr.bsky.social Kickstarter. We've already funded but barely. It would be great to get a few more backers and there are some great rewards available for those that support us. kck.st/3VMaSEy

Today in nice human interactions, I accidentally had a package delivered to the wrong address, still in my neighborhood. I left a note in their mailbox and they got the package back to me! Sometimes I need to be reminded that people are still capable of kindness between strangers.

Woke up at 6a and couldn’t go back to sleep because I have to call health insurance as soon as the lines open and clarify why they won’t cover an ultrasound my doctor seems to think I need, and when confirmed cancel the appointment so I don’t get a fee. It’s cool, super cool, loving this, yes.

We're making all your websites shitty and evil. What are you gonna do, log off and spend time with your family

I often feel overwhelmed by the amount of wrongs in the world crying out to be righted. Years ago, I decided that the best way to make change was to pick my arena and fight like hell within it and to have faith that other people would do their best in their arenas.

Would love some sci-fi book recs for a friend’s 12 year old child who is a big reader. She’s currently reading The Martian; I was thinking of recommending Long Way to a Small Angry Planet. Any other good, accessible recs that aren’t too violent or spicy?

Honestly, though.

Like every other industry, there are a scant handful of ultra wealthy folks at the very top who couldn’t care less what goes on beneath them as long as number goes up. It’s really only through a century of union pressure and activism that we have even managed to maintain a working class existence.

Look at this supermodel.
