On Pourquoi-Pas Island, we watched fur #seals tussle and #penguins waddle about on the icebergs and snow behind As winter begins and the sun sets, the forecast for the night read clear skies and a KP index of 6 Nevertheless…forecasts don’t mean much in #Antarctica, we could only wait and see.

Day 5 We finally arrive at Pourquoi Pas Island after successfully dodging icebergs in The Gullet While we’d already spotted them off the ship, we had our first close encounters with fur seals here, as well as more Chilean skuas and a small Adélie #penguin colony #Antarctica #photography

Hi BlueSky, I’m Ryan! I’m an environmentalist, adventurer, photographer, and full-time cat parent that’s hopelessly in love with Earth While I spend most of my time advocating for the polar regions, there isn’t a single ecosystem on this planet that escapes my interest 🧵 👇

More animals we encountered while sailing to Pourquis-Pas Island via The Gullet A trio of fur seals, trio of adelies, several intermittent humpbacks, and a Chilean skua #Antarctica #photography

Day 5 No landing this AM as we sail through The Gullet, but in #Antarctica, days at sea are far from boring Standing on top deck, we’re treated to incredible views of endless glaciers, peaks, and wildlife on sea ice. Though, the distant wildlife spotting often requires a keen eye #photography

Day 5 After a full day in the Fish Islands, we sailed through The Gullet on our way to Pourquoi-Pas Island With winter starting, the day/night cycle returns to #Antarctica & with it comes jaw-dropping sunrises and sunsets #photography

#Penguins are a keystone species in #Antarctica, stabilising marine food webs as both prey and predator, and acting as nutrient transporters across land and sea They’re also an indicator species for the health of the Antarctic, which in turn indicates overall planetary health #WorldPenguinDay

The Leopard #Seal may be my favourite of the seals in #Antarctica, but Weddel Seals win the award for cutest seal face by far I mean, just look at this chonk, all 3.5m/12ft and 600kg/1300lbs of em #photography

Our first crab eater #seal encounter. Despite the name, they don’t really eat that many crabs Their preferred prey, like most others in #Antarctica, is krill (the red patch running down its mouth is not blood, but staining from the pinkish red shells of krill)

Our first encounter with one of two apex predators in #Antarctica, the leopard #seal Not that I’ve encountered many, but this was by far the largest one I’d ever seen, almost as large as our 15ft long zodiac boats #photography

Day 4 - after a successful landing at Prospect Point, we made our way back to the ship for the night, but a few surprises delayed return 3 species of #seal, and an extremely close humpback #whale encounter, all within a span of 10 mins #Antarctica is truly a place like no other #photography

I’m not a photographer. I’m just in love with this planet. Every day is #EarthDay - Oregon - Botswana - Iceland - Antarctica #photography

The new Sony 50-150 f2 sounds like such a fun lens. I can see myself trading my 24-70 & 70-200 for it… #Sony #Photography

Some of the many #seabirds of #Antarctica, made from our first landing on the continent (yes, I’m still only on day 1 out of 12 total days on ice) 1: South Polar Skua 2: Antarctic Shag 3: Brown Skua 4: Adélie Penguin (mid-molt)

Adélies are my favourite #penguin - most avoid contact with other animals during their annual molt Without waterproof feathers, they’re unable to find food and vulnerable to prey Yet, these highly curious Adélies had no issue charging at us and honking in our faces #Antarctica #Photography

Adélie #penguins are one of two penguin species exclusively indigenous to Antarctica While most other species seek warmer waters, the Adélies are prepping to overwinter in #Antarctica, where temps can exceed -60c Prospect Point - 1st continental landing, 2nd expedition of the day #photography

#Penguins undergo a “catastrophic molt” every year, where they grow new feathers to maintain the waterproofing and insulation for the upcoming Antarctic winter During this 3 week period, Adelies are unable to enter the water for food, making them particularly vulnerable (& hungry) #photography

After a successful morning in the Fish Islands, we sailed to Prospect Point where we landed on the continent, deep in #penguin territory With winter starting up again, these Adelies are doing their best to complete their molt so they may resume hunting and migration #Antarctica #photography

This voyage, we had unbelievable encounters with humpbacks, with many of them being brand new to science, never once recorded by researchers Meet Flukey Trenning, one of the #whales named by a fellow passenger after donating to HappyWhale, a project that helps researchers ID whales #Antarctica

We navigated through the Fish Islands, around the newly formed sea ice, towering icebergs, and stray penguins/seals resting on ice floes As the engines cut, we heard the distinct sound of humpback #whales breathing, turning around to see these beauties approach us #Antarctica

More icy stunners we encountered on our first morning’s zodiac ride #Antarctica
