I've written biographies of Ludwig Wittgenstein, Bertrand Russell and Robert J. Oppenheimer and am currently preoccupied with climate change. My passions include music and ancient churches. I am proud to be a volunteer tour guide at Salisbury Cathedral.

Private Eye hitting the nail on the head.

Had a nice little walk around Salisbury today with my friends Gary and Tim, but the footpaths round here are a bit wet at the moment!

In this cry of anguish, Monbiot speaks for many of us who are in despair over the views expressed and the action taken by the present government. We thought that at the very least they would be better than the Tories. They're not. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

This handsome volume of the works of John Jewel was for 100s of years chained to a church lectern. It is now in @heritagewshc.bsky.social, where I spent the day reading it. It is good to know that we still have wonderful public archives, staffed by such erudite people as @ruthdotbutler.bsky.social

Looks like my days of visiting the USA are over.

RIP Paul Benacerraf. I met him a few times at Princeton and he was unfailingly interesting, charming and kind.

While LA burns, there are people whose purpose is to persuade us that climate change is not real. They are by no means harmless. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Trump wants Greenland because of the minerals that are being uncovered by the climate change that he denies is happening. The greed, cynicism and dishonesty are breathtaking. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

St Peter's, Fugglestone, on the edge of Wilton, just outside Salisbury. It's a lovely, tiny church, largely built in the thirteenth century, around the same time as Salisbury Cathedral. (The bellecote and spirelet were added in the 15th century.) It's in disuse at the moment, awaiting restoration.

Listening to Elon Musk's interventions in European politics, I'm warming to the idea of him moving to Mars.

Just bought some bathroom scales. The Quick Start guide tells me that the first thing I need to do to start using them is "Download the app". This is getting ridiculous.

Solidarity, Becks, I missed out on a knighthood yet again this year too. What the hell is going on? www.standard.co.uk/lifestyle/da...

The wonderful Norman church of St Andrew's, Great Durnford, Wiltshire. For over 400 years the lectern had chained to it ("by order of Queen Elizabeth I") a book by John Jewel, Bishop of Salisbury, which was stolen in 1970. Jewel is the subject of an article that I am working on. Watch this space...

The High Altar, Salisbury Cathedral. I go to the cathedral at least once a week, but even now there are times, like yesterday (when I took this picture), when its beauty still leaves me open-mouthed. It has a perfection, I think, that is unmatched.

No, Autocorrect, I did not mean to wish my brother a greasy Christmas!

I'm looking forward to reading this. I haven't read any of it yet and don't know whether it's any good or not but it's high time that someone wrote a detailed, critical study of this subject. www.routledge.com/Frege-and-Fa...

"Efficiency savings". As if the problems with our public services were caused by inefficiency!

Salisbury Cathedral, now festive inside and out.

A busy day on the Ecohub stall at Salisbury Market for Santas Against Climate Change. Fifty vegan mince pies were given out plus 60 Christmas cards, in which people made a pledge to a child in their life to leave the world a better place. We'll be back next Tuesday, so pop along and make a pledge!

If you protest against the destruction of our planet, you are more likely to be arrested in Britain than anywhere else in the world. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

‘It takes a special kind of spiritual dimwit to cast a text as fierce and mysterious as the Old Testament as a banal and scolding exhortation to make your bed, but Peterson, as it happens, is just that kind.’ Becca Rothfeld in @washingtonpost.com archive.is/QzZOg

Salisbury Cathedral's advent service, Darkness to Light, was featured as the first item on tonight's One Show. They did a good job too of showing how beautiful the cathedral looked and how glorious the singing was. Well done BBC!

I've just had a message from my insurance provider giving me advice on how to protect my home from Storm Darragh. I've never had that before. Is that common practice now?

Salisbury Cathedral has put its Christmas tree up and very nice it looks too! Here it is reflected in the font.

We weren't allowed to take pictures of Darkness to Light, the candlelit Advent service at Salisbury Cathedral, but the Salisbury Journal apparently was. Here's one that shows how beautiful it was.

I have a slight suspicion that she is amusing herself at our expense by just making these up. If not, what a wonderful thing to have a word for!

The start of Advent service tonight at Salisbury Cathedral, called From Darkness to Light, was absolutely glorious. The singing was sublime and the sight of the cathedral lit only by hundreds of candles was jaw dropping.

Went to see Paddington in Peru today and loved it. Olivia Coleman as a singing nun was a particular delight as was Hugh Bonneville being Hugh Bonneville (nobody does it better). It made me laugh it made me cry and was altogether lovely.

William Hague? Oxford, are you having a laugh?

Just some right-winger in the Mail going on about pernicious benefits claimants. Oh hang on, it's our Labour prime minister!

OK Bert, you've outstayed your welcome now.

I've been a librocubicularist all my life!

Gosh. It's a bit blowy outside!

Carbon offsetting always seemed a bit of a dodge. Now, a heavyweight and very serious panel at the University of Exeter has concluded that it should have no place in plans to get to net zero. theconversation.com/we-have-offi...

Storm Bert would sound so much less threatening if it were called Storm Bertie. Then we could imagine it as a frail old man with twinkly eyes and a reedy, old- fashioned voice, puffing on a pipe.

It's a sign of the craziness of our times that we even need a reality check on Musk's lunatic idea of settling Mars but, as it seems we do, here we are. edition.cnn.com/2024/11/21/s...
