If you're worried about losing Skype, Jami fits the bill pretty well---except for the ability to make phone calls. Also, Infomaniak's kSuite Pro is virtually like-for-like the equivalent of Google Workspace Individual plan for a similar (slightly cheaper) price (w/ 3TB of space instead of 1TB)

What a sad state of affairs. Getting the impression of a 'Roman / Spanish / Brit empire is falling' type of event. And the frog is still in the pan. History in the making...

Also, universities should really step up their game when it comes to setting up servers. I have a 96-core EPYC 9J14 running at 2.6Ghz 😬, its base clock alone is just over 4Ghz. This tells me someone should be looking at the cooling of these things, because I'm almost half as fast as I should be...

Halfway through assembling my metagenomes (from stool, allegedly) and it's dangerously getting close to 1TB of RAM. What kind of sacrifices (and to which God) are required for the memory use to plateau? I just need to manage to assemble some meta-genomes with mere 185 million reads...

48c/96t and 1TB of RAM to do metagenomics 🥲 plus 8TB of space 🥲 takes so little to make me happy...

Different assemblies from the same raw data depending of which version of Dorado... _really_ having a tough time taking nanopore seriously... how do people cope?

I am happy to share with you the new list of speakers for the Population Dynamics Virtual Seminars 2025! Subscribe to our mailing list sites.google.com/view/popdyn/... The first talk will be at the end of January

That awkward moment when you realise, half way through the meeting, that there's a Minecraft chicken* just behind you... and you try your hardest not to laugh during the rest of the meeting. *Best debugger/stress relief combo there is.

ourworldindata.org/antibiotics-... Absolutely wild that many developing countries are using far less antibiotics as growth promoters than many European countries (some of which are also the ones using the least antibiotic) and other developed countries across the globe.

We are slowly getting back all the audience of the Population Dynamics Seminars and TheoBiophysics folks from X-Twitter. If interested, subscribe to our Bluesky channel @theobiophysics.bsky.social and check our seminar series sites.google.com/view/popdyn/...

At ISID 2024 to present work with Nina Zhu & Tim Rawson on using AI to predict acute kidney injury from vancomycin & VPT therapy! Visit poster #1 at 12 PM today! @CAMO_Net1 @HPRUamr #AMR #AIinMedicine Also chat to me about Microbiology Society's Knocking out AMR project 😊

I can´t believe in this day and age, software built for genomics do not support multiple threads... running resFinder locally and 100% baffled how slow it is. I'm better off taking their fasta files and using #Hound --- and not just because I wrote it, I can use my 32 bleemin'cores instead of 1.

#Microbial gene taxonomy is such a clusterf*k mess someone should be ashamed. The elephant in the room either nobody talks about, or everybody knows but pushes under the rug. To add insult to injury, their name in databases like #CARD is off-sync with annotation genomes...

My whole academic career in 5 DVDs (6 with my current research). Kind of flattered that I have produced as many DVDs as The Hobbit + LOTR. "Carlos' PhD, an unexpected journey" is certainly fitting given how it all started, tho withou singing. Or "Carlos and The Battle of the Five Reviewers"...

I just burnt my first DVD in nearly 25 years---post-internet era. An immutable backup... my... preciousss...

I've been toying around the idea of burning my past research into DVDs in case of catastrophic computer failure. I have backups in other hard drives and what not but they can also fail. A DVD is just burn-n-forget... Anyone from #academicsky doing snapshots in a more long-term storage?

Here be Hound. A nice tool that wraps BLAST, SPAdes, and some magic dust to help assemble and profile genomes assembled de novo. Need to find an esoteric gene in an esoteric microbe? Now you can do that easily. Or... rip off others' DBs 👀 for E. coli, Kleb, etc. academic.oup.com/bib/article/...

A proof-of-concept study where I explore the effect on drug efficacy against a targeted baterium of other microbial species growing alongside. MICs in the presence of these neighbours is predictable (qualitatively) 🤓 --- too bad can't pin this, but there you go... www.nature.com/articles/s43...
