This wax model from the 19th century shows the internal structure of the brain, complete with its protective covering, the meninges. Wax models like this were used for teaching anatomy to medical students at a time when it was difficult to find bodies to dissect. Photo: Wellcome Collection.

It's the final day of #Archive30 with @arascot.bsky.social and today we ask #WhyArchives? Archives can create a sense of belonging. They give us the chance to learn from the past to influence our future. They spark our curiosity and imagination.

There are just a couple of tickets left for our tour on the 12th May as part of the Blythswood Festival. Come along and see our beautiful building on St Vincent Street and here about Glasgow's amazing role in the history of medicine. Book tickets at www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/tour-of-th...

A small but favourite #ArchiveCollection for #Archive30, the family archive of surgeon brothers John & Charles Bell. It includes a locket with entwined hair of Charles & his wife Marion, with dates of their marriage & Charles' death. Sent to a nephew as "a memorial of your uncle Charles and me".

Born #OnThisDay 1791 RCPSG Fellow, William Mackenzie, renowned ophthalmologist and founder of the Glasgow Eye Infirmary. He was appointed Surgeon-Oculist in Scotland to Queen Victoria in 1838. #ophthalmology

The demolition of the Lister wards at Glasgow Royal Infirmary (1926). The wards opened in 1861 and were the birthplace for Lister's antiseptic practice which revolutionised surgery. There was international outcry at the demolition of such an historically important site #Archive30 #ArchiveBuildings

Today we launched our new mini exhibition "Together in Friendship", celebrating 425yrs of RCPSG. Curated by Roxanne, our amazing work placement student from Glasgow Uni, the exhibition is open Monday's 2-5pm. Find out more here: heritageblog.rcpsg.ac.uk/2025/04/25/t... #SomethingNew #Archive30

Happy Friday! It's #WorldPenguinDay so I thought I'd remind you that penguins do have knees, they just aren't where you think they should be.

The knife used by James Syme (1799-1870), for amputations.. It is a large instrument used to part the flesh around the bone prior to cutting the bone.

This early 18th century herbal notebook is a very #PopularItem in our collection. It has cures for everything from hiccups to the plague (and the odd cake recipe too). It's also shrouded in mystery - who was the author?! #Archive30

Happy #WorldBookNight! We hope you're curling up with a good book this evening 📚 (Woodcut illustration from Ophthalmodouleia, 1583)

This is the medical bag (c.1930) of Dr Maud Perry Menzies. She was a specialist in community medicine and public health and established a diphtheria immunisation clinic in Rutherglen. #CommunityArchives #Archive30

"I could a tale unfold..." This beautiful sketch of a section of the human scalp is accompanied by a quote from Hamlet! The specimen was prepared by Dr Anglin Whitelocke (1861-1927), surgeon at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. #shakespeareDay #Shakespeare #anatomy

#archive30 #day22 #archiveaction An abandoned room ⏩ ⏩ a functioning museum @arascot.bsky.social

#archive30 #day19 1924 Lister ward is demolished. Noone with power in GRI seemed to want to preserve the place where Lister pioneered antisepsis. Fortunately some items were salvaged by @rcpsgheritage.bsky.social & @wellcomecollection.bsky.social #archivetravel @arascot.bsky.social

The anatomy of a rabbit, from Samuel Collins' Systeme of Anatomy published in 1685. The work contains many illustrations of comparative neurology, an emerging science in the late 17th century #OnlineArtExchange #Easter

This year we're celebrating 425 years since our foundation! Our Royal charter was granted by James VI on 29th November 1599. That's probably a bit more than a #MiniMilestone. Maybe a #MidiMilestone? 😆 #Archive30

After trying out carbolised silk as a ligature, Lister then searched for a material that could absorbed within the body, settling on catgut. Lister spent many years refining ligature & suture material; by 1881 he was using carbolised catgut that had been hardened by chromic acid.

#OnThisDay 1868 in our Faculty Hall, Joseph Lister presented his findings on antiseptic surgery. The Glasgow Medico-Chirurgical Society minutes record that momentous occasion. #histmed #historyofmedicine #JosephLister #Lister #Glasgow

Today's #Archive30 theme is #SomethingSmall and these artificial glass eye lenses fit the bill perfectly. They were manufactured c.1900 and are stored in a tiny wooden box.

For #WorldArtDay take a look at our latest curation on @artukdotorg.bsky.social featuring the work of Muirhead Bone and how his drawings of Glasgow captured a city in change and on the cusp of development in the early 20th century artuk.org/discover/cur...

Today's #Archive30 is all about #ArchiveFoodAndDrink and we think this lunch looks lovely! The photo was taken in Salonika c.1916 and shows nurse Annie Allan (centre) with Lieutenant Vine & Sister Cashmore. The photo is from our Scottish Women's Hospitals album. #WW1 #Histnursing

I love our records of patient diets and nutrition, but I think my fave #ArchiveFoodAndDrink record is this complaints book re medical college catering, here with illustrations of pests allegedly found in the food. #Archive30 Read more here: https://bit.ly/3dCfTIO

#UnusualArchives is the theme for today's #Archive30. This is a cast of David Livingstone's humerus showing a healed fracture. It's quite an unusual thing to have. How he got the fracture is also pretty unusual - he was attacked by a lion! 🦁 heritage.rcpsg.ac.uk/items/show/111

#Archive30 #HiddenHistories. Our smallpox vaccination registers (1801-1896) are an important record not only of public health and early vaccination in Glasgow, but also of the people of the city, particularly working class families. The registers contain names, addresses and occupations.

It's #NationalPetDay! To celebrate here's a gorgeous painting of "The Dog and the Doctor" taking a well earned break together after a hard days work. (Oil painting by Joseph Denovan Adam, c.1919)

Today's #Archive30 is all about #ArchiveAnimals and that means we get to share one of our very favourite photos from our collection - Pet therapy at Mearnskirk hospital, c.1955 🐶❤️

Patients with TB at Frimley Sanatorium took part in outdoor activities as part of their recovery programme. One of these activities was working on the pig farm! This clip is from a c.1926 film - A Day in a Sanatorium. #ArchiveAnimals Watch the full film, RLHBHFfilm/3/11, here: shorturl.at/4cKXv

To celebrate #NationalSiblingsDay here are two stunning illustrations by brothers John (1763–1820) and Charles Bell (1774-1842). The Bell brothers were Scottish surgeons and anatomist but they were also talented artists and illustrated their own works. #SiblingsDay

Medical practitioners in 17th century Edinburgh were often at loggerheads. Here's 6 metres of grievances by the surgeons about the apothecaries for having the audacity to "practice the art of chirurgery". Suffice to say they were absolutely livid! #Archive30 #SomethingBig

For today's #Archive30 we're looking at #SomethingBig and this chart of chemical analysis by W. Little fits the bill. The chart also gives details of blowpipe and distinguishing characteristics for each element. It measures approx 95cm x 70cm.

It's #NationalUnicornDay! Hooray!🦄 To celebrate here are some fabulous #unicorns from Pierre Pomet's Histoire generale des drogues (c.1694). Unicorn horn was believed to have miraculous medicinal properties that could cure all manner of ills

Today's #Archive30 theme is #ArchivePlan. We love this floor plan for the dispensary at the Royal Hospital For Sick Children, Glasgow c.1888.

It's always interesting to see how research interests change. A new entry at no.1 for our most accessed collection 2024/5 was the records of Glasgow Medical Society and in particular, a series of essays written by its members. The most popular essay was on venereal patients #ArchivesToday #Archive30

The anesthetic power of chloroform was first noted in 1847 by the Scottish physician James Y. Simpson. He and his two friends experimented with it on the evening of November 4th. At first, they felt very cheerful and talkative. After a short time, they passed out.

We have launched a project aimed to reveal & celebrate women in surgery. The project has launched with an exhibition exploring the history of women in surgery & a new artwork representing eleven remarkable surgeons. You can find out more over on our blog: bit.ly/4ck45ZK
