Another pic from our LD group, hosted by Pennine Heritage. At the end of last year, Trustee Judith helped us plant some bulbs. Nice to see them starting to flower in the spring sunshine.

No Grade II listed buildings were harmed in the making of these… things…

An undated but early 20th century view of Scarborough, North Yorkshire, before it was quite the seaside destination it is today. Oysters, fresh from the beds anyone!? Image from the South Pennine Archives, hosted by Pennine Heritage.

It’s pancake day at LD club. We didn’t have the right equipment or even the right ingredients but we muddled through and ended up with an approximation of Yorkshire puddings. Might not look like it but they were very tasty.

Keep fighting to be heard, historians. Be relevant. Be bold. Be ambitious. royalhistsoc.org/more-than-ev...

A long but productive day at the Mental Health Museum and a chance to revisit the labyrinth too!

A view of Manchester from the moors of the West Riding of Yorkshire.

Lots of great panels at #WhoCares2025. This one included Hilary Marland, Len Smith, Han Dee and two of the organisers! Thanks to Cécile Birks @clairedeligny.bsky.social @laurencedubois.bsky.social @embfauquert.bsky.social and Laetitia Sansonetti for a great couple of days.

Final day at #WhoCares2025 and an opportunity to think about old and new paradigms of ‘care’.

Great panel on art and creativity at #WhoCares2025. Papers by Rachel Wilson and Fabienne Moine. This slide from the latter maybe of interest @valbold.bsky.social

Great to be at the #WhoCares2025 conference at Paris Nantererre. An interesting programme kicks off with a key note by an old friend, Rory Du Plessis. Thanks to @clairedeligny.bsky.social, @laurencedubois.bsky.social and the organising committee. @sshmedicine.bsky.social

Some history inspired building work with our learning disability group this week. A team effort to recreate some of the scenes that can be found in Hebden Bridge.

A vision of London. The old, including the Bishopsgate Institute, and the new, including 30 St Mary Axe (the Gherkin) between Liverpool Street and Spitalfields.

Nutclough Wood at Hebden Bridge

Fantastic Asylum: Refugees and Mental Health project team visit to Ally Pally yesterday. Great to see behind the scenes at such an interesting venue.

I co-authored a short piece in this with lit scholar, Dr Iona Murphy, and three of what turned out to be my final, final-year undergrad cohort at UoH. We reflected on our motivations for being involved in a public history of Learning Disability. Looking forward to seeing the full copy.

Sorting through some papers and found a copy of the Japanese version of a Bag of Tricks, a mental health resource kit I co-produced with the wonderful New Vic Borderlines team.

Frozen Rob, frozen canal at Hebden Bridge. Clear and bright, unlike the photo!

Funny and thought provoking. Recommended anyway but definitely for those interested in the histories of mental ill health and the limits of support in the c21st.

Festive advertising for those last minute gifts. The box does look colourful. Merry Christmas!

Woo-hoo, the project we co-produced with the Cricket Foundation @yorkshireccc.bsky.social is now online. It complements the physical exhibition which launched earlier this year and is a forerunner to this year’s project with @manmetuni.bsky.social yorkshireccc.com/community/yo...

For those wishing to submit papers and panels to the EAHMH Health Beyond Medicine conference in Berlin, 26-29 August 2025, you can do that here. Registration also found here. hi.converia.de/frontend/ind...

Feeling fagged? Have a banana (from 1936).

‘Umpteenth iteration of redundancy processes’ at Huddersfield 😔

Usually post the image at this time of year. I was lucky enough to work on a project with Leeds Mencap a few years ago and we found this Christmas card in a box of old materials. Very Christmassy!

If you're interested in the history of mental health and psychiatry, this series is the place to start. Many of the books and edited volumes are open access. If you can't afford one that isn't ask your library to order it. link.springer.com/series/14806

On this day in 1936, a constitutional crisis.

On this day in 1936, an opportunity to write to the Daily Sketch for a Babar Christmas Card.

Great to be working with the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation and @yorkshireccc.bsky.social again. This year’s focus is Disability and Sport, with input from @manmetuni.bsky.social History students Ellya, Ethan, Jamie and Rosie. Thanks to Charlotte for the tour and inspiration.

Not sure how many shopping days there are to Christmas but this is guaranteed to be a festive favourite. Fun for all the family!

Festive fun with @mctom.bsky.social and the rest of LD club at Pennine Heritage today. Christmas biscuits, crafts, and tree decoration, all inspired by history and heritage. Nice to welcome back old friends and see new ones for the first time.

Started trimming up for Christmas and got the tree in? Why not treat yourself to the pleasure of a lovely Player’s cigarette?

New profile pic for the festive season.

Images from the Dr Guislain Museum in Ghent. Currently hosting the Cultures of Mental Health conference but a great place to visit too #CMH

Early evening sun reflecting on the water tower at the former Guislain or Ghent Asylum. Now, home to a huge museum, it’s worth a trip. #CMH

As part of the Asylum: Refugees and Mental Health project we’re at the Dr Guislain Museum #CMH24
